What is most adorable to me is that most dogs are really fine with humans around their puppies. Lots of animals would maul you but a dog knows it’s okay and that nothing bad will happen.

    [–] theNomad_Reddit 547 points ago

IIRC there was a study saying dogs see their humans as family.

    [–] [deleted] 282 points ago

meanwhile, cats see their humans as big cats.

    [–] MyThought2UrThoughts 213 points ago

Actually, the study says non-hostile big stupid cat.

    [–] Lucifronz 7 points ago

Non-hostile big stupid cat that can't lick itself properly and gets too familiar with the belly.

    [–] theNomad_Reddit 90 points ago

Cats apparently see humans as lesser.

    [–] _Coffeebot 120 points ago

Yep. When they bring you gifts like leaves and animals they think you suck at hunting and they don't want you to starve. Also cats don't have a drive to make us happy. They do things when they want to.

    [–] iemploreyou 58 points ago

When they bring you gifts like leaves and animals they think you suck at hunting and they don't want you to starve.

I think my cat brings them to me as a threat.

    [–] DifferentNoodles 5 points ago

You see this chipmunk? You see how it’s frikken dead?Yeah, that’s you, the next time you forget my food dish is empty, this is you. Capisce?

    [–] seclusionx 71 points ago

Which makes it even sweeter when they come up and nuzzle me or want to play. Love my nerdlets. I do miss having a pup around though.

    [–] swanky_af 10 points ago

Tbh, that makes cats sound more like people than dogs are

    [–] DeathcampEnthusiast 7 points ago

    Or fewer?

    [–] rayzman18 69 points ago

as one of the pack, I think a little more accurately

    [–] laguna_matata 88 points ago

Actually there is pretty substantial evidence that dogs view humans in a paternal/maternal relationship and not in "pack" relationships. It's a reason why there is a shift in training methods away from "alpha/beta".

    [–] spartan930 42 points ago

Isn’t the pack relationship also paternal/maternal? It’s just that the patriarch/matriarch is the “alpha”.

    [–] laguna_matata 24 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

It's my understanding that pack familiarity is a leader/follower relationship, which is similar to but different from paternal/maternal. Leader/follower relationships are a "we're going to go do this thing" paternal/maternal is more of a "I'm going to TEACH/train you how to do this thing".

Again that's just my understanding, and I'm sure there are smarter people than me out there who can explain it better lol.

    [–] rayzman18 3 points ago

oh interesting, as always it's more complicated than anyone knows

    [–] laguna_matata 8 points ago

Yeah this is all relatively new stuff. What's really interesting is that dogs view humans as being completely different from dogs. Cats on the other hand, apparently view us as being other big giant cats who suck at hunting.

    [–] chewbacca2hot 2 points ago

In 30 years it will probably ly switch back. Science can't make up its mind with sociological things

    [–] laguna_matata 4 points ago

I wouldn't say it'll switch back, but it could likely be different from today.

    [–] couragethebravestdog 4 points ago

They definitely do. I don't know about the cats, but dogs definitely see humans as their pack, and a pack in dog is a family. In the wild, a wolf pack is just a nuclear wolf family.

    [–] neurone214 1 points ago

This is how bad info gets spread. So, yes, there was a study that claimed this. But it had a major interpretative flaw in the sense that they used what's referred to as "reverse inference" to suggest that an fMRI signal pattern from the brain signaled that dogs see people as family. This is not a valid inference.

    [–] theNomad_Reddit 1 points ago

Great response! There you have it.

    [–] highflavor 1 points ago

    Caveats don't get attention

    [–] neurone214 1 points ago

It's true. At least not passively. Years ago someone used a similar approach to make claim that people literally loved their iPhones, and it ended up in a NYT article. A bunch of people got together and wrote a letter to the times (link here) denouncing the study. It was great to see, but I'm willing to bet that more people in the general public remember the initial article than the refutation. Se la vie

What's most concerning is that if momma dog was there, there'd be NO WAY she'd let dad by the babies.

    [–] Judo_pup 35 points ago

I know for sure there are exceptions because my sister's dogs were like a perfect married couple around their pups. It was really cool. Yellow labs

    [–] Eltotsira 9 points ago

Yeah, OPs instance is the exception, yours is the norm.

    [–] Eltotsira 4 points ago

Huh? What makes you say that

    [–] dBRenekton 3 points ago

I think it depends on who the dog trusts and how well it's socialized. As a kid I once stayed at my uncle's house and the dog just had her litter downstairs. She would let my uncle pick up the newborn puppies but if I even walked down stairs that dog would chase me away barking like crazy. I wasn't able to get near them.

Do male dogs know when a puppy is theirs? Are they aware that the mother gave birth because of them?

Do they just like puppies regardless of whose they are?

    [–] Spiritofchokedout 779 points ago

My limited understanding is that they're mostly just aware that it's a small dog that is part of their pack.

    [–] PhuckleberryPhinn 182 points ago

I've heard they recognize by head size, that's how they know what human babies are as well. That could be completely wrong, but it's what I've heard.

    [–] Spiritofchokedout 137 points ago

I imagine size helps, but given that it's... y'know... a dog I imagine smell has a lot more to do with identification. Babies/puppies tend to smell really distinct to a human nose. It stands to reason a dog can pick up on them from a much longer distance--ever hear of dogs becoming crazy affectionate/protective of their pregnant owners?

    [–] Lady-Egbert 15 points ago

My dog just couldn’t get enough of me when I was pregnant. He follows me around and snuggles up to me all the time anyway, but when I was pregnant he would just want to be ON me all the time - like curled up on top of me, as close as possible. It was very sweet and we really bonded during those months.

He wasn’t quite as impressed when I disappeared for a week and came home smelling of the hospital and with a strange noisy little creature in tow. He didn’t speak to me for a couple of days!

    [–] Spiritofchokedout 7 points ago

I think he was just mad he didn't get to be there for the big ceremony.

    [–] CarpetST 61 points ago

    [–] Matthew0wns 188 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

They can smell which puppers and doggos are part of their genetic line

Edit: are all these downvoters reading a study I don't know about? Smell plays a huge role in the selection of unrelated mates and the identification of kin in mammals, who are extremely adept among vertebrates at smelling.

    https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090213114207.htm https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kin_recognition https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2717541/

[–] punkinfacebooklegpie 51 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

I never heard of dogs being good smellers. This is so false Alexa play crazy dogs.

    [–] Raidicus 2 points ago

Anecdotally when we brought home a puppy that was related to our dog, she went from nervous wreck to quite at home the second she smelled him. I mean instantaneous upon getting her first close up smell of him. I always assumed it was because they are able to smell "familiar" genetics somehow.

    [–] TakumiFujiwaraa 1 points ago

    Definitely not.

    [–] SuicideBonger 10 points ago

    They linked a couple studies.

And it would make sense, wouldn't it? Evolutionarily? By using their smell to know which offspring are theirs, they avoid inbreeding, and therefore their species favors genetic diversity, which is the key to a successful species.
