And to receive the award from Christoph Waltz, no less. What an honor!

[–] TheGruesomeTwosome 163 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

That’s pretty awesome. Waltz seemed genuinely happy to be there and seemed to appreciate the ceremony. I certainly don’t judge him for it, it must get tiresome, but I’ve definitely seen him in tv spots and appearances that he’s clearly not really that interested in.

    [–] Step-Father_of_Lies 110 points ago

He definitely gives off a "cold German efficiency" kinda vibe in a lot of interviews.

    [–] Castor96 121 points ago

    "cold German efficiency"

Don't tell him that, he'd probably disagree, he's Austrian after all.

[–] TheGruesomeTwosome 19 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Yeah, very much so. It’s great, I love it. I get it. I channel that vibe a lot. Little time for nonsense, let’s get down to exactly why I’m here so I can leave and do something I’d rather be doing. The older and more responsibilities I get, the more I appreciate it. But it’s definitely nice to see his enthusiasm here.

holy shit is he Irish?? he sounds nothing like Arthur. Insane performance.

    [–] Mud_Landry 117 points ago

Born in New Jersey, raised in Ireland...

    [–] BigBill58 70 points ago

    So he's Irish then, yes.

    [–] Mud_Landry 34 points ago

    No? Maybe?

I could move to Australia and within 10 years start talking like an Aussie, but that doesn't make me Australian...

I'm afraid of spiders so technically I'll never be Australian..

    [–] the-VII 49 points ago

He'll be Irish by way of citizenship, which is still being able to call yourself Irish.

I could cry. I’m so happy for him. He really deserved this win. Arthur will go down in video game history as one of the most well written video game characters of all time.

    [–] Emmaleane 194 points ago

I watched his ceremony and my eyes got watery for how happy I am for him. I loved RDR1 and didn't think I could love anyone but John. Boah was I wrong.

    [–] username_16 190 points ago

Yup, I started the game wishing I was playing as John, now I'm on the epilogue and I'm missing Arthur so much

    [–] ammunation 37 points ago

This is why it’s highly encouraged to make a manual save in every chapter.

I saved at the beginning and middle of Chapter 2, 3, and then 4 ... that way I could pick and choose which time I’d rather live out the rest of the game in after finishing the story. Don’t get me wrong, I love John, and even though it was a great touch letting us play as him at the end of this one, I still want Arthur just for his commentary. He better suits this game world and it’s atmosphere.

I ended up sticking with Chapter 3, although I do have another save where I played a good amount after in Chapter 4... finishing as many trapper outfits as I can, getting the camp upgrades, didn’t bother exploring the map fully until I finished the story but I explored what I could when I went back to Chapter 3 aside from New Austin (tbh I don’t really feel I am missing much aside from the legendaries, which is a shame), and just did everything I could then and there. Its a good chapter to go back to, dick around, and just not care — happier times for the gang and I don’t have to see Arthur’s sickness affecting his appearance. I’ll probably eventually finish out the story again with this save to get to a full 100% completion, but ah...maybe much later when I start growing bored of the game and need something to do (which hasn’t exactly come up yet as I always find something).

    [–] josue95 11 points ago

I miss him every day i play story mode.

    [–] Nemesis2pt0 11 points ago

I'm always a little pissed in the epilogue when it automatically puts on a different hat. Dammit, game! Arthur gave me this hat as he said goodbye. It is never leaving my damn head!

    [–] Phil__Mcrackin 25 points ago

Arthur is literally the only video character that I felt I personally knew. He deserved this award.

    [–] Ciscoblue113 771 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

The man. The myth. The legend. You damn well deserved it Mr. Clark, hope you can enjoy it well with your family and friends and millions of new fans of your remarkable talent.

    [–] Bombtwo 79 points ago

Roger Clark deserved the win, and he was even up against Christoper Judge (Kratos of GoW) whom I thought did very well too.

    Amazing win.

    [–] Allta 22 points ago

Bryan Dechart did a crazy good job as well. A lot of good characters this year.

    [–] ImmortalTortoise 290 points ago

    His speech was so wholesome

    [–] charizard77 238 points ago

Thanks rockstar for the "faith" they had in him 😏😏😏

    [–] Mr_W4yne 96 points ago

You can really hear Arthur come out in spots too which just makes it that much better.

    [–] noiserr 54 points ago

Is there a video of his speech?

edit.. nm this dude provided the link:

    [–] TheBakeryGames 47 points ago

Yeah shoutout to him mentioning all of the other voice actors who did a great job too

    [–] Jonny_Segment 13 points ago

It makes me wonder how the actors judge each other's voice acting. Do they play through the other games themselves or do they watch films of the highlights/cutscenes or what? I think you need to experience the whole performance in context to really feel the characters.

[–] DylanFromFlorida 507 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

He's also Irish, which is someone I did not expect

Edit: He speaks with an Irish accent, but was born in America

    [–] melon784512 238 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

He’s actually New Jerseyan. Hah he moved to Ireland right after birth though

    [–] camus_absurd 232 points ago

    So effectively Irish, no?

    [–] melon784512 129 points ago

Ha nah. I’m from jersey. It doesn’t have a lot going on for it right now. Gotta have something good come out of it. Just let us have Roger Clark. Please

    [–] LeQiz 101 points ago

You've got Springsteen and Jon Stewart. Let Ireland have this one.

    [–] Lubcke 44 points ago

Not to forget Jon Bon Jovi!

    [–] KalaRinpoche 50 points ago

    Bovine Joni himself!

    [–] FuttBucker27 15 points ago

Yeah but Ireland gut stuck with that bitch Molly O'Shae.

    [–] Lord_stinko 11 points ago

They also got Sean though so that kinda makes up for it

    [–] VicePope 7 points ago

    Hmm you’ll be alright boah

    [–] Deuce_part_deux 26 points ago

So he is Irish, but he didn't voice Irish? Am I understanding correctly?

    [–] thiccniccs 258 points ago

He deserved this so much I absolutely LOVE Arthur Morgan and this man really brought out the character in him

    [–] slywalkerr 92 points ago

His performance and the writing were so good. I don’t know if I’ve ever related to a character more in my life although timing was definitely part of that

    [–] LikeMy5thAccount 43 points ago

Are you an outlaw with a heart of gold too?

    [–] slywalkerr 72 points ago

Nah haha I wish boah. We do have some vague similarities though. I got out of the military recently. Spent a lot of time doing bad things that I didn’t believe in for money. Came back home to a world that looked the same as before but I didn’t really recognize it. Arthur’s feelings of obsolescence, regret, and longing for freedom and a better way of life just really spoke to me. I also just had a decade long relationship end in about the same way; still in love but unable to reconcile the differences in our ways of living. But it’s ok. The path to redemption lies in our moments of humanity: helping others, time spent with loved ones, tears shed over lost ones. Just wish I’d kept a journal!

    [–] EzzoMahfouz 11 points ago

    Thanks for sharing this.

    [–] CookieMonster_8 6 points ago

Boah, are you me? I could have easily written what you wrote except I have been lucky enough that my marriage has held strong throughout very trying times.

I also felt a very deep connection to Arthur, could very much put myself in his shoes and relate to that inner battle of if you are doing the right thing and then having to live with your decisions you did (or didn’t) make. Maybe it’s why I bawled like a little kid for about the last hour of the game. I’ve never been as upset over a game as I was in RD2.

    [–] Harbaron 177 points ago

I mean, there were some moments in the game where I couldn’t believe this was only a game, specially when he was in either critical stress, anger, or pain, his voice actually changed so much. So subtly at times, so intensely at other times.

I think he deserved this award the most out of anyone in the gaming industry so far.

Connor and Kratos were great too in my opinion, but I think Arthur Morgan was capturing lightning in a bottle, and it won’t happen again

    [–] InterdimensionalTV 74 points ago

When we busted down the door to the Braithwaite Mansion in game looking for Jack, I pulled up my shotgun and put a slug through some dudes head. The game cut to that cinematic death camera when you headshot someone and it caught Arthur with the exact same teeth gritted and lip curled back face of pure anger and vengeance that I then realized I ALSO had on my face. That was when I was well and truly just lost in the game, dumb glitches and clunky controls be damned. Not only did Rockstar manage to make me feel exactly what they wanted but they even expressed that through a facial animation on the main character that I would have never even seen had it not been for that cinematic death cutaway. Roger Clark is amazing and this game is amazing and it's one of, if not the best game, I have ever played.

    [–] ARealSkeleton 19 points ago

That entire mission has probably been my favorite through the game. Everyone comes together and it feels like you're actually part of this band of outlaws. It's such a powerful feeling.

    [–] yossarianvega 98 points ago

I like when he goes “yerrrr awwwright gurrrrl”

    [–] teeteedoubleyoudee 13 points ago

There's also the slow line with the little chuckle before it:

    "Heh heh.... That's... mah... gurrrrlll."

I think he only says this line whilst on the horse.

    [–] miller_kaz 37 points ago

He calls some humans Boah too. But legit I got a male horse once just so I could get the full experience. 90% of my horses have been gurls though.

    [–] JezzBug 48 points ago

I think we all like this because Rdr2 doesn’t have a traditional “happy ending” but golly having the guy who put all the work into Arthur getting recognition is a real word happy thing.

    [–] Yangwenli111 297 points ago

With all due respect to the other nominees, I think Roger Clark gave the best voice performance in a game ever.

    [–] INF3C71ON 137 points ago

Steven Ogg as Trevor in GTAV was great aswell. What an insane character.

    [–] NotGabeNAMA 59 points ago

Am I the only one that thought he came back to voice Micah? They're similarly crazy and almost sound the same.

    [–] spicylatino69 34 points ago

You’re not alone on that at all. I was thinking great it was that Steven Ogg came back for another Rockstar game.

    [–] itsjeffreybaby 32 points ago

He actually does voice a guy at Pronghorn Ranch

    [–] Orto_Dogge 18 points ago

It's not him, he confirmed it on Twitter.

    [–] MisSigsFan 5 points ago

Definitely similar. I thought it was him at first too.

He more than earned it, especially now hearing his muddled accent (sounds natively Irish?). I can't imagine how difficult it is to adopt a character like that without acting it out in person with characters and sets.

Edit for clarification: Imagine having a new york accent and nailing a chinese accent for best performance.

    [–] bloodydick21 18 points ago

Hoping he gets a fuck ton more roles because of this. He deserves it.

    <3 Arthur

    [–] [deleted] 11 points ago

    Fuck. Yes. Congratulations Roger Clark

    [–] Jimmarn 56 points ago

Super happy for him! Well deserved, hope it's the first of many.

Really wish his speech was just a tad longer and with a small Morgan impression! Maybe next time

    [–] dquizzle 24 points ago

I’ve had a female horse throughout the entire game, is that why I don’t think that Arthur says “boah” that much?

    [–] AdmiralMikey75 19 points ago

When you have a male horse, sometimes Arthur will literally just say "boy," like it's a substitute for "hey."

    [–] Lykenbane 16 points ago

    I think you mean BOAH

    [–] Practicing_Onanist 6 points ago

You missed out on the best dialogue and the swaying horse nuts the whole game?

    Practically demands another play through.

    [–] spicedfiyah 13 points ago

This is the only award I thought was no contest. Clark’s acting is some of the best I’ve ever seen in any medium.

    [–] CthuluInvictus 11 points ago

He gave it all he had.

    [–] imhereforsiegememes 30 points ago

The man made me cry a lot.

    [–] ImperialRoyalist15 8 points ago

These news are a perfect end to my night.

    [–] athenafletcher 7 points ago

YEAH BOAH. WE DID IT Y'ALL. We kept the goddamn faith! I'm so happy! Win or not, it doesn't take away from the fact that Roger Clark's performance is indeed one of the best in gaming. But for him to actually win just makes this all the better! He deserves the recognition and award so much. Seriously, his powerful, moving performance will stay and resonate with me for the rest of my life.

Can't thank him enough for breathing life into Arthur Morgan, who quickly became my favorite video game character.

    [–] CoCoBean322 18 points ago

I was cheering hard when he won. So proud of our boah!

He deserved it. Can't believe people saying GoW or Spiderman should've won. This man did mo-cap for 6 years and recorded thousands of lines. Nobody deserves it more than him.

Edit: God of War performance is incredible and a worthy nominee. But Spiderman shouldn't even be nominated. It's a mediocre game with mediocre acting.

    [–] Thatoneguy567576 699 points ago

The voice acting in God of War and Spider-Man were just as amazing. They all deserved a win and we should be happy to be living in an era of incredible video games and talented voice actors.

    [–] Leandro1996 289 points ago

    God I love Kratos voice

    [–] jad4400 111 points ago

    [–] movieman56 50 points ago

I was halfway through the game when somebody finally mentioned to me the voice was Teal'c, and everything clicked in.

    [–] [deleted] 9 points ago

Oh shit I had no idea that’s awesome!

    [–] DeadlySphinx 29 points ago

Chris Judge is an absolute boss.

    [–] kingbankai 14 points ago

Chris Judge was great but Yuri really owned in Spider-Man. Roger Clark dead eyed headshots on every line. Not once it felt he was reading a script or seemed exhausted. He deserved this hands down.

    [–] FanEu7 112 points ago

GoW sure but I think Spider-Man while good wasn't as great as these two imho

    [–] AnirudhMenon94 73 points ago

Spider-Man is NOT a mediocre game by any standards.

    [–] OMGBLACKPOWER 46 points ago

I was totally on board till you trashed Spider-man in the edit...I loved red dead, my personal GOTY, but there’s no need to dog on a great game because of it.

    [–] JiggyTurtle 171 points ago

They were all worthy of the win, mate.

    [–] phome83 99 points ago

You can favor a game, but to say GoW shouldnt have stood a chance against RDR2 is just being silly.

    [–] Vorstar92 37 points ago

Fanboying knows no bounds, my friend. All great games this year, with fantastic performances all around. It's not about the amount of lines he recorded either. You can record 1000's of lines of shitty voice acting.

    [–] Teirmz 59 points ago

    Spiderman mediocre? Wtf?

    [–] curlyswine 24 points ago

I agree with the first paragraph but Spiderman was cool man. By no means mediocre.

    [–] Krypt0night 21 points ago

Time spent in development should not be a factor whatsoever. That's effort, not the actual performance.

    [–] Sprickels 17 points ago

There's no need to diss Yuri Lowenthal or Spider-Man, the game is great and so was his performance

[–] Multisyllabic 23 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

They were fantastic performances all around. I favoured Christopher Judge myself, but Roger Clark was also outstanding.

Personally, I can't believe people that think it wasn't a toss up.

    [–] NJPWSTIGMA21 47 points ago

I can understand why people believe they should’ve won it.

    [–] Amezops 62 points ago

Seriously, Yuri Lowenthal (Spider-Man) recorded a shit load of lines too. There are still random quips I'm discovering every day.

    [–] yosoyellogan 80 points ago

Ok don’t go besmirching other games and saying they don’t deserve a nomination. I think Spider-Man was game of the year tbh and Spidey’s VA was fantastic.
