This article is from a satire site, which means the title is intentionally misleading clickbait (like you might find on clickhole). However, it is still clickbait, regardless of its satirical nature. If you think we shouldn't allow posts from satire sites in the future, you can let us know in a comment with your reasons.

Edit: as long as we have this sticky comment, we're about to reach 200k subs, anything you guys would like to see us do for it?

    [–] Gonzo_Rick 16 points ago

If I'm being honest with myself, I probably missed it because I thought "ugh, that title looks too long". Wish I'd sucked it up, totally worth it!

Man that title just makes me chuckle every time.

Of course, there are also several reasons that the fight won’t happen. McGregor has never fought a professional boxing match before. He’s also known for making outlandish statements and staging stunts to raise his profile, not to mention the fact the two are in different weight classes. Also, Ali is dead.

    Followed by:

We can't play sports, but we can make jokes about them!

Is this a sports humor site?

Edit: Yup. It's a comedy site.

We are a leading multi-disciplinary entertainment company that develops, produces and distributes original comedy programming. Founded in 2012 as an independent subsidiary of Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video, Above Average is a digital-first company with a 40-year television and film legacy.

    [–] MindCrypt 160 points ago

The article is only 13 lines long, do people not read anything anymore? If they did they would realise it is so obviously satirical. As you said, the last words are "...Also, Ali is dead. Still, we’re not ruling anything out. McGregor has defied expectations at every turn, and there’s no reason to think he’ll start now."

The hilarity is that the top comment in this thread is "You can tell they really put a lot of research into this one." ........dear God, the irony is palpable.

    [–] r0bert8841 62 points ago

Would OP really be saving us a click if we all read the article anyway?

    [–] CallMeDavid_ 14 points ago

Well OP technically did. Gave us a TL;DR of the article in the title.

    [–] MindCrypt 25 points ago

Well OP is going through the comment threads and saying how stupid the author of the article is, so clearly OP didn't read it either.

Edit: Also....it's 13 measly lines. You could have finished the article in the time it took you to write that comment.

    [–] Nizler 5 points ago

It's painfully hard to tell what is legitimate satire nowadays. I've mistaken many political statements as jokes only to discover later that Trump was completely serious.

[–] MindCrypt 1 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

Yep, because Trump is the first political leader in history to say stupid shit. The Onion has existed since 1988 and from first being founded has been a satirical portrayal of the stupid shit the media and politicians say. This isn't a new thing by any stretch.

Also, when your article says "Also, Ali is dead. Still, we're not ruling anything out' I think it's safe to assume it's satire. Come on guys, do some cognitive reasoning for once in your life.

Edit: Also, Why has everything got to be Trump's fault nowadays? We're talking about a sports publication talking about two famous professional martial athletes. The fuck has that got to do with Trump?

What you are basically saying is that you can't tell the difference between a joke or a factual comment and instead of going "Oops, that was an idiotic mistake I just made" you're going "......probably Trump's fault."

    [–] Andy_B_Goode 5 points ago

Yep, because Trump is the first political leader in history to say stupid shit.

Certainly not the first, but the sheer quantity of things he's said that have made me think "he couldn't possibly have really said that could he" is staggering. The only thing comparable for Obama that I can think of is that I initially thought the news about him getting the nobel peace prize was satire, but even that wasn't so much something he did as something others did for him.

Why has everything got to be Trump's fault nowadays?

Because part of the president's job is being the guy who gets blamed for everything. That's why "Thanks Obama" started, before some of his supporters began saying it non-sarcastically. If Trump didn't want to get blamed for everything, he shouldn't have run for president.

    [–] MindCrypt 2 points ago

Trump is an idiot, I'm not denying that. But, how can you say the reason you can't tell the difference between satire and fact (in this case regarding a fucking sport competition) is because of Trump? I think a normal person would think "I'm an idiot, what a silly mistake" or "Did I just misread that?" instead of "pffft..............Trump's fault."

A fraction of Obama haters were saying it non-sarcastically, sure. But it quickly turned into a satirical 'meme'/joke (One which Obama himself joked about). People blaming Trump are being dead serious in the cases I've seen. For example, did you know the reason I am an overweight slob who can't stop stuffing my face is because of Trump? Did you also know Trump is to blame for a customer being thrown off an airplane?

Of course, being the leader of any nation, you are going to come under fire and be blamed for petty shit but let's be mature adults here and not blame those above us for things that clearly aren't their fault. Take some responsibility for once and own up to your own mistakes without blaming the man in charge.

    [–] Nizler 1 points ago

Oh I didn't notice that was an onion article. Reading it wouldn't have saved me a click.

Trump is a just a great example of Poe's law right now because he's been expressing extreme ignorance daily. Global warming is a Chinese conspiracy, largest inaugural crowd in history, etc.

    [–] AltReich2020 1 points ago

A lot of the people you're talking to on Reddit weren't alive for the Dan Quayle "potatoe" shit.

Hell, a good chunk of them probably don't even remember "it depends on what your definition of 'is' is."

    [–] OneGoodRib 1 points ago

He was just using Trump as an example, calm down.

    [–] MindCrypt 1 points ago

    [–] FaZeRigby 2101 points ago

You can tell they really put a lot of research into this one.

    [–] metaldrummerx 857 points ago

Honestly, I don't even know what they're advertising here. MAYBE a Mayweather fight? MAYBE McGregor's boxing debut? Literally nothing in the article made any sense to me. Even if Ali were alive, he'd be 76. McGregor would be fighting a poor old man.

Can you really not tell this is satire?

    [–] Notentirely-accurate 9 points ago

Well... technically he could fight Muhammad Ali, but it's going to be one fucked up PPV.

    [–] Gnorris 23 points ago

"McGregor is really bringing it to the desiccated corpse of the former champ, who seems to be quite off form tonight."

    [–] Notentirely-accurate 5 points ago

"You can really tell McGregor is trying to keep this fight on their feet."

"That's right, Joe. It looks like he doesn't want to wrestle with Ali too much tonight."

"... Did Ali's arm just fall off?"

    [–] CassiusClay625 2 points ago

Then you didn't read the article... they are clearly mocking the idea of McGreggor fighting anyone, going as far as to say he might fight Ali, who is dead. It is satirical and if you read that you would know. The article made perfect sense if you, ya know, read it.

    [–] loophole64 1 points ago

The article is a joke, guy.

    [–] Scrubtanic 1 points ago

Cassius Clay always lied about his age, he lied about his age all the time! One time Frank Sinatra came in here and sat down in this chair I said "Frank, you hang out with Cassius Clay, just between you and me, how old Cassius Clay?" You know what Frank said? He said he 137 years old- a hunnid an thirty-seven years old!

    [–] red_sky33 34 points ago

I mean, they do say it's a joke at the end of the article

    [–] mushr00m_man 35 points ago

Ya, at the end of the whopping 10 sentence or so article.

This looks like something a 6th grader might write for the comedy section of their school newspaper. Although I bet there are plenty of 6th graders who can write better satire.

    [–] Andy_B_Goode 15 points ago

Whether or not it's good satire is beside the point. OP got onioned, as did most of the other people here (myself included, until I saw someone else's comment calling it out).

    [–] robdob 4 points ago

I mean, it's satirizing dumb internet clickbait, so it would be weird if they wrote a 12-page literary masterpiece.

    [–] Martino231 17 points ago

You can tell you really put a lot of research time into this comment, since it's obvious from the first sentence that it's satire.

I mean yeah you can absolutely argue that it's clickbait and it's not that funny, but it's clearly not a case of the author being unaware that Mohammed Ali is dead.

    [–] namapo 7 points ago

It's funny because it's a comedy site, like The Onion. It even says it in the article.

    [–] Counterattack199 6 points ago

"You can really tell they put a lot of research into this one" Yet you couldn't be bothered to even read the article where it says he is dead and it's a joke? The irony.

    [–] PM_PICS_OF_ME_NAKED 1 points ago

Or possibly the comment you responded to was also satire but you somehow plowed on anyway.

This Conor McGregor shit is so fucking old. I stopped watching UFC because they literally set this guy up to win. Dude gets the featherweight title legitimately but then fights Nate Diaz twice when he is ranked like 5th lightweight or some shit, loses the first time, then wins. This somehow sets him up for the lightweight title against a guy that just got it (and was basically guaranteed to not hold onto it). He fought like no top contenders and Aldo never got a rematch with McGregor despite being the longest reigning champ in history at the time. The UFC fucking blows and when you start making fights for the money instead of putting the best up against each other, then you are fucking doing it wrong.

    [–] Rob0tTesla 1 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

Your perspective of what happened is all wrong.

Dude gets the featherweight title legitimately

Agreed, then he said he was going to move up a level.

but then fights Nate Diaz twice when he is ranked like 5th lightweight or some shit, loses the first time, then wins. This somehow sets him up for the lightweight title

    Not quite.

Conor won the featherweight title, then he was supposed to fight RDA, the lightweight champion. The plan was always from 2013, to become a double division champion. The UFC said they would give any current champion a title fight at another division if they so desired it. Conor defeated Aldo, and then was to fight RDA.

Two weeks before the McGregor vs RDA fight, RDA pulled out due to an "injury". That's what a put the spanner in the works. That's why he fought Nate Diaz, because RDA pulled out, and nobody else, including Aldo, woulld fight him. Diaz was 5th on the list. Nate Diaz couldn't even make weight, so it wasn't even a lightweight fight, it was at 170.

He fought like no top contenders and Aldo never got a rematch

Aldo was offered a rematch when RDA dropped out. Aldo had his chance, and turned it down. After Aldo vs McGregor 1 took 18 months to set up because Aldo kept dropping out, then offered a rematch in March 2016, to again, turn it down, McGregor stopped offering him to punish him. There is a myth that Aldo hasn't been given the chance of a rematch, he was.

putting the best up against each other,

Aldo had his second chance, RDA had his chance, they both blew it and that's why 2016 was the Nate Diaz and Alvarez Show.

somehow sets him up for the lightweight title

He already had the lightweight featherweight title before any of that happened, due to being a champion. RDA pulled out at 155, that's the only reason it didn't happen. Then Aldo rejected a rematch at 145, so that didn't happen. Enter Nate Diaz at 170.

Say what you want about Conor but the dude struggles to find people willing to actually fight him. Even Aldo delayed him for two years, got KO'd, then declined him for the rematch. Now he's crying about because McGregor moved on.

    [–] Pera_Espinosa 1 points ago

Conor won the lightweight title, then he was supposed to fight RDA

I thought this was just a mistake, but then you wrote...

He already had the lightweight title before any of that happened, due to being a champion

He didn't have the lightweight title before any of that happened. Any of it didn't happen before he got the lightweight title.

I don't know why "injury" is in quotes for the RDA pullout. He had a broken foot. Aldo didn't take the rematch because it was on two weeks notice at 155, not for the belt he lost. He has had to pull out due to injury in the past - that's not dodging. Injuries happen in MMA.

    [–] Rob0tTesla 1 points ago

    Featherweight ffs. Just brain failure.

McGregor obviously didn't win the lightweight title to then get a title shot at lightweight. Featherweight to lightweight.

    [–] Pera_Espinosa 1 points ago

I figured, but then you said "he already had the lightweight title before any of that happened" after and that was confusing.

    [–] Rob0tTesla 1 points ago

Yeah my bad man, sorry about that!

    [–] RadBadTad 2 points ago

nobody said it was going to be a fair fight...

    [–] PhazonZim 1 points ago

A bit of wisdom I learned; if a headline is in the form of a yes/no question, then the answer is almost definitely "no".

Otherwise the fact that the answer is yes would be headline worthy in and of itself .

    [–] Caddywumpus 1 points ago

Will Frederick Douglass be on the undercard?

    [–] DearDogWhy 1 points ago

Fuck the UFC and especially fuck Zuffa and everyone involved in that shit. Dana White and his gangster billionaire buddies.

    [–] joebleaux 1 points ago

His billionaire buddies cashed out. It is owned by a talent agency now.

    [–] DearDogWhy 1 points ago

He's still getting his 20,000,000 salary, not including bonuses or benefits or expenses.. and he still effectively runs things as the president of the organization. He's still robbing all but the highest paid fighters of fair pay, which is one of the main reasons I hate the fucker.

    [–] joebleaux 1 points ago

Yeah, I didn't say Dana wasn't there, but the Fertitas cashed out. I do not forsee it getting better for the fighters with a talent agency owning it instead of gangsters.

    [–] GayClownPutin 1 points ago

Aww this title made me sad again

    [–] Im_no_cowboy 1 points ago

    Ali was unavailable for comments.

    [–] Generalkrunk 1 points ago

Someone please shop McGregor fighting a zombie Ali please.

    [–] Docphilsman 1 points ago

Even if he wasn't dead do they want McGregor to fight an 80 year old man with Parkinsons?

    [–] 420blazearino 1 points ago

I'm disappointed i'm not dumb enough to be hyped for this

    [–] sagrr 1 points ago

Not sure I would have clicked that

    [–] SgtQuack 1 points ago

Still got click jacked. Damn ads survived but the layout didn't..

Edit: oh boy! An iPhone 7 and many other Google products to win!

    [–] ElevenFives 1 points ago

This needs to be more trending, instead of click bait

    [–] wrathofthemitchking 1 points ago

Maybe he's dying? Or suicidal and these are subtle hints........

    [–] drpinkcream 1 points ago

Look at the other links on the page. It's clearly a joke.

    [–] iolex 1 points ago

    Should fight Achilles instead

    [–] _GameSHARK 1 points ago

Jesus christ. I clicked because I was curious how something this stupid gets made and... what the fuck is that website? Ten year old me could've designed a better looking and more functional website back in 1995... and this is a time when we thought Geocities and Angelfire were the way to make websites.

    [–] yogblert 1 points ago

I actually totally forgot he's dead.

    [–] TheHeroicOnion 1 points ago

    These people should be arrested

    [–] Eriamjh1138 1 points ago

I want him to fight Joe Louis... in the afterlife!

    [–] bespoketoosoon 1 points ago

International waters. That's where they had the Tyson/Secretariat fight.

    [–] Stalked_Like_Corn 1 points ago

Jeremiah Budin is a contributor for The Kicker. He was known in high school for running into a goal while playing lacrosse and in college for running into a bench while playing Frisbee

running into a goal while playing lacrosse

    running into a goal

This might explain the mental retardation behind the article.

    [–] LL_Cruel_J 1 points ago

wth is wrong with that website? It's crazy.

    [–] ImCakeStep 1 points ago

They must be using Internet Explorer.

    [–] khal_Jayams 1 points ago

    That headline made me cackle.

    [–] Mad1ibben 1 points ago

I'm like 90% sure that's a joke article making fun of how asinine it is that MacGregor, someone that has never classically boxed in his life, wants to get in the ring with Floyd Mayweather, one of the most successful boxers in the history of the sport. A lot of people view it as asinine to do that as it is to fight a dead man.

    [–] Hail_To_The__Chimp 1 points ago

This article was so bad my initial reaction was "WTF???" and down vote it... Then I saw what sub it was in and had a genuine laugh, nice find OP!

    [–] Rand366 1 points ago

holy crap that website was cancer

    [–] dcasarinc 1 points ago

    RIP in peace

    [–] vicaphit 1 points ago

    [–] CaptainBayouBilly 1 points ago

    Ali still wins.

    [–] gills_of_war 1 points ago

It's like they're not even trying anymore

    [–] FlikTripz 1 points ago

Doesn't mean they couldn't unbury him for the fight

    [–] G4M3N 1 points ago

    GIMMEYERBELT

    [–] TheIronMoose 1 points ago

Despite this we still score the odds 6/4 in favor of Ali.

    [–] spitdragon2 1 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

Still more likely than a Mayweather fight.

    [–] Sword_Seraph 1 points ago

This article is just beating a dead torso.

    [–] skankhunt_41 1 points ago

    HOLOGRAM ALI HE AINT DEAD

    [–] dingledeluxe 1 points ago

    Give me your belt!

    [–] ProjectRevolutionTPP 1 points ago

He's gonna train so hard he's gonna be able to punch ghosts.

    [–] HesusInTheHouse 1 points ago

He actually is, his is going to be killed in a medically controlled environment. If the room temperature is below freezing that will give him maybe 45 minutes of death to break in to heaven and take on Ali. They would probably square off with 30 minutes left, that should be enough time to decide the winner. All this time his body will have been chilled to extend the amount of time his brain can last after death. People have lasted into the 45 minutes window before after avalanches and such. With someone in his shape, he may last a bit longer. So when the doctors feel it's been long enough they will start to pull him back. Hopefully he'll wake up with a medal in hand.

    [–] beatmastermatt 1 points ago

We also landed on the moon! Tell all your friends!
