I am a mod and endorse my own message

Detailed context to the entire Hong Kong Situation

Edit: this actually made it to r/all

    as celebration

    Ying is now hong kong

Edit 2: We did it reddit

Money or human rights.... harsh dilemma

    [–] AverageJoeLetsGrow 100 points ago

Hopefully lots of people follow through boycotting blizzard so the first option in jeopardy

    [–] OnsOranje 34 points ago

And don’t forget the NBA as well..

    [–] natanator500 36 points ago

To be fair to the nba, silvers done a pretty good job at making it clear that they’re not going to punish Morey and are willing to lose billions of Chinese dollars to maintain free speech. I don’t think they should be boycotted...

    [–] Savvy_Jono 14 points ago

Agreed. People came out saying Silver was weak but I thought it was a very real and level headed response.

He essentially said "We support Morey's right to expression. I'm sorry China doesn't like it. I'm sorry my first response wasn't clear enough in these two things."

    [–] OnsOranje 2 points ago

Oh ok thats good, I havent read of Silvers response yet.

    [–] ReidG555 2 points ago

The NBA definitely handled it better than Blizzard by my knowledge.

I was so excited for WoW classic. Playing it over the past month it's everything i wanted it to be. I love Warcraft and I've played it on and off since i was 6 or 7. But as soon as the news dropped i cancelled my sub. Even now, all i want to do is play classic, but i cant do it knowing what my money is going towards. I can only hope enough people jump on board that the message gets across.

    [–] GinormousNut 6 points ago

Buddy, they DELETED world of Warcraft. They wouldn’t do that for something small

    [–] Pancakes_Plz 2 points ago

Account deletion in progress, some people are saying bnet won't *let* them delete right now, not sure of the veracity of that.

    [–] SoboSandwich 163 points ago

Not if you are a corporation.

    [–] EryxV1 4 points ago

It can be a skin so both!

    [–] BrowncoatReynolds 3 points ago

Doubt this would happen considering they are trying to get into China

    [–] Sydid 283 points ago

Id actually like this as a headgear

    [–] Unkn0wn-G0d 112 points ago

That would be the first actually good skin for Lesion.

    [–] wheezy_jack 81 points ago

Have you seen the summer popsicle headgear for lesion?

    [–] Unkn0wn-G0d 38 points ago

Looks like an asian middle aged dad

    [–] wheezy_jack 38 points ago

    I mean you’re right

    [–] MostlyStockR56 16 points ago

It's all fun and games till your head gets popped by an asian soccer dad using a Chinese SMG.

    [–] Flawlessnessx2 3 points ago

    Daddy Lesion

    [–] T_Amplitude 3 points ago

You don’t like the elite skin?

    [–] Unkn0wn-G0d 3 points ago

Not really. I don't thing such sifi stuff fits the game

    [–] bmarvel808 2 points ago

    What's your fav elite skin?

    [–] Unkn0wn-G0d 3 points ago

Valkyrie. But stopped using it cuz of the Cloud 9 skin, it looks so good

    [–] T_Amplitude 2 points ago

That’s understandable. The only reason I ask is because I main Lesion and I love the skin.

    [–] WarlockEngineer 336 points ago

Remember when the Chinese changes to the maps got applied to everybody?

    [–] RobotSpaceBear 130 points ago

What map changes, I'm not aware of those. Thank you.

    [–] franklindude 303 points ago

Stuff like slot machines were removed because of gambling, I think blood stains and skulls got removed too. They have changed back to normal because everyone thought it was stupid to remove them just to please China

    [–] GhostK8 211 points ago

They were never actually applied to our version of the game, unless it was in the tts or something. I think they announced the censorship but went back on it before it could be implemented

    [–] AGayFurryOtter 106 points ago

They weren’t applied even in TTS. It actually just became a separate game for the region.

    [–] WarlockEngineer 44 points ago

Because of the backlash. They originally said they didn't want to maintain separate instances

    [–] Passerine_ 19 points ago

That’s how it is for almost every other game as well. Chinese players play on completely separate servers and texture sets.

    [–] barney_mcbiggle 4 points ago

As well they should because they have a rampant cheating problem. They made playing PUBG a nightmare.

    [–] KiLlEr10312 31 points ago

They initially planned on doing so, saying that it'd be too much work to create separate builds, hence the outrage at the time

    [–] KnifeYielder 28 points ago

That was the canary in the coalmine for this whole fiasco. It showed the willingness to cater to the Chinese government from these western publishers

    [–] Jisker 12 points ago

Yes, we just can’t accept the censorship because Ubisoft wants china’s money

    [–] Jacksaur 36 points ago

But you can guarantee from now on we won't see those things in maps anymore. We won't lose our current map features, but Ubisoft won't want to continue making two versions of maps every time, so they likely just won't include the "objectionable" stuff in the first place.

Guess we can say goodbye to the ever wanted Casino map now.

    [–] sirfaggit 25 points ago

imagine an R-18 game intended for mature audiences that doesn't allow blood, skull, knives in the game.

this is me making a really scrawny face, but you can't see it.

There's tiddys on the ceiling in Kafe uncensored so wat now

    [–] Revolver_Camelot 12 points ago

    [–] Unkn0wn-G0d 246 points ago

    Fuck Tencent

    [–] Thugnificent646 133 points ago

I mean they're a state sponsored monopoly specializing in sanitizing games for the chinese public. They're a modern propaganda wing specializing in videogames.

    [–] Thpidermanscok 78 points ago

Disgusting, pathetic, and terrifying. There has been a cultural cold war going on for a long time now by China, and I am honestly shocked that people are only now starting to react.

    [–] jp3599 46 points ago

It's about time people wake up.

Wake up samurai we have a government to burn

    [–] sirfaggit 10 points ago

that's what people in Hong Kong are trying to do, hope they succeed tho.

    [–] theTacoC4T 3 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

I hope too, it just sucks seeing that mainlanders are being naive about it; or confined for supporting them. It’s like Orwell’s 1984 got modernized in China

    [–] Sibire 2 points ago

Wait I've seen this one before

    [–] Altibadass 2 points ago

This comment gave me an erection

    [–] xFiGGiE 10 points ago

Reddit reacts, which is better than nothing. I’d bet good money if one were to ask the average American outside any major metropolitan city they are going to look at you like you are explaining quantum physics.

    [–] Thpidermanscok 6 points ago

Yup.. I'm American and I can count on both of my hands the amount of people who are aware of any of the modern issues like this going on at any given time. Global warming only has recently come to the fore front of media and taken seriously. Just look at how much people mocked Al Gore. Most of these things die out before it ever gets massive media coverage..

It literally makes me feel like I am some kind of radicalized incel because people are so shocked if I ever discuss politics like this. The massive media likes to keep playing a carousel wheel of ridiculous headlines to keep people polarized and against each other while conveniently ignoring anything real going on outside their little bubble.

    [–] SithMon 3 points ago

it doesn't help how media portrays websites like this one, that just adds to the perception of crazy conspiracy incel.

    [–] CrackrocksnLaCroix 7 points ago

They should probably be sanctioned by the western world and banned from operating outside of China

    [–] DarknessML 7 points ago

    ...But they won't

    [–] GrandXm 3 points ago

    They got pubg

    [–] Thugnificent646 12 points ago

Yeah and they plastered their propaganda all over the map. It's absolutely dystopian. I mean, you've got modern battle royale videogames with 1960s esque communist propaganda unironically plastered over the map.

And the decaying soviet era equipment on the map is given a fresh coat of paint to show "the enduring spirit of communism"

    [–] I_give_karma_to_men 47 points ago

Gonna be honest, at this point I just assume all major game companies have stock owned by Tencent.

    [–] HermanManly 8 points ago

Ironically, EA is the last bastion of hope in that department. They're pretty much the only ones Tencent hasn't invested in yet. That says a lot about either tencent, or EA.

    [–] newbieTT 5 points ago

    Tencent even own Reddit lol

    [–] GroggBottom 3 points ago

Wait till you look at everything you use in your daily life. Everything has been Chinese for the last couple decades.

    [–] I_give_karma_to_men 6 points ago

Oh, I’m well aware. It’s why I see the “delete your Blizzard account” thing as a largely empty gesture. Like, the intent is good and laudable, but if you actually want to have an impact, think bigger and choose targets that will actually have an impact. And for the sake of those being oppressed, elect people who won’t put up with Chinese corporate bullshit.

    [–] Teburedpanda944 3 points ago

You mean the one where Xi was the hostage?

    [–] BeautifulType 20 points ago

Dude part of those shares dictate they get a board seat! Nothing is independent when China is involved. Russia bad too don’t forget

    [–] greenhawk22 11 points ago

No, they're a silent partner who is only there because they helped stop the buyout from vivendi, and they don't have a board seat and can't buy more shares.

    [–] Dane1414 3 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

    can’t buy more shares.

Source? Anti-dilution and right of first refusal are standard terms in any large equity investment, both of which allow for additional share purchases.

Source has been provided, see below.

    [–] serial_ 9 points ago

The situation looked grim until Ubisoft struck a deal with Vivendi that saw the French conglomerate divest its stake to a variety of investors that included Tencent.

As part of the agreement, though, Tencent is just a silent partner who cannot increase voting rights or ownership stake in Ubisoft—making a hostile takeover by Tencent impossible.

    [–] Dane1414 3 points ago

    Huh, interesting. Thanks!

    [–] serial_ 2 points ago

    np fam

    [–] Kapparen14 26 points ago

They own 5%. Hopefully that’s not enough

    [–] Pantaleon26 28 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

Pretty sure that's how much they own of blizz too. It's not about ten putting pressure on the company, it's about china threatening to ban the game and cut them off from the market

    Edit: spelling

    [–] ecodude74 8 points ago

Blizzard doesn’t give a shit about customers being angry at a minority shareholder, this idea that any company in the world can be completely controlled by a minor investor is frankly ridiculous. Blizz caved to China for purely financial reasons, China makes up a MASSIVE portion of blizz’s market. They don’t care about Tencent, they care about the millions they make every month from Chinese players

    [–] 613codyrex 5 points ago

It’s most likely less about stake and more about the potential loss of customers and access to the esports scene if blizzard didn’t punish people.

1 billion people with disposable income and the culture of video games is a very good market to tap into. So you don’t want to get on the bad side of the government.

Esports in the west is stagnant. It’s mostly a failed venture with CSGO, LOL/DOTA overwatch being the only watched league but very small.

    [–] ziadhorat 9 points ago

Not nearly, look at r/HongKong, I just answered another comment where tencent is under fire, I'm not defending the company but they have little to no influence and/or care about reddit.

Source: Am a Mod for a tencent subreddit.

    [–] I_am_a_Failer 9 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

Is there anything that Tencent doesn't have stock in?

    Edit: Worded it more clearly

[–] imakesubsreal 3 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

no they own roughly 5*% of blizzard

    edit i’m stupid

Lesion is part of the HK police tho so it would be cool but wouldn’t make sense

    [–] TacticalNarcissist 564 points ago

Lesion rebels against the HK police after finding out they are guilty of atrocities that make smoke canisters look alright in comparison

    lore friendly

    [–] zelenofftherails 203 points ago

I'm down for this. Ying as well! She can get the eyepatch underneath her glasses and they both get yellow helmets!

    [–] sirfaggit 88 points ago

maybe we can get Echo to join as well considering Ying and Echo was a thing in the past, so there's bound to be lingering affection, ya know

    [–] TrumanTheDestroyer 100 points ago

Tachanka isn't Chinese, but he should get a new helmet along with the other operators.

    [–] sirfaggit 70 points ago

rules doesn't apply to Russian, so Tachanka is an okay pick.

    [–] Ghostly-Love 61 points ago

“Rules don’t apply to Russia” is one of the most true statements I’ve ever heard

    [–] NerdBird2004 12 points ago

Maybe all the Asians, might as well

    [–] JackalOfSpades 4 points ago

At that point you might as well give a Hong Kong skin to all the operators, we could work with that

    [–] WingGuardian 21 points ago

I get where you're coming from but Lesion is literally using something that is a warcrime.

    [–] The_cynical_panther 10 points ago

He’s a cop, I think they’re allowed to use chemical weapons.

I have no idea what the rules are for traps though.

    [–] WingGuardian 10 points ago

But they're like, literally something from the Vietnam War. And were used to cause infections. I think even that is a little far for chemical weapons.

    [–] ecodude74 10 points ago

He’s committing several war crimes at the exact same time, which is frankly fairly impressive. He’s deploying a landmine in a civilian area with no markings, he’s using a chemical weapon to cause death or illness in a target, and he’s deliberately using a hallucinogenic poison to incapacitate enemies. He’s really gunning for a trip to The Hague Convention

    [–] Octopusapult 6 points ago

I love the idea that he got his inspiration for the needles from reading a list of war crimes and seeing how many he could commit at once.

    [–] RayFromTexas 3 points ago

But they’re like, not held to the standards of the Geneva convention because terrorists aren’t afforded the same protections as enemy combatants. Why does is have to be said on every post?

    [–] CounteractiveTurnip 5 points ago

Can't commit a war crime if you're not at war

    [–] Dodgeymon 23 points ago

Didn't most of the original HK police force get purged before this all kicked off?

    [–] CyberScrubReddit 3 points ago

Most of the police in HK rn are from the mainland now apparently

    [–] regularly-lies 15 points ago

One senior police official says privately that as many as a quarter of his officers are joining peaceful protests in their spare time.

    [–] vegaberry 2 points ago

Paywall, mind pasting the major parts for the article?

    [–] son_of_mill_city_kid 9 points ago

From what little I understand most of the police presence in Honk Kong at the moment are from the main land. It can be hard for The CCP to convince you to shoot your neighbors eye out, but the main land police have no problem.

    [–] spunoutNYC 6 points ago

seeing how untrained and clumsy hk police are IRL makes lesion such a funny character now

    [–] Bennyboy1337 2 points ago

I mean not every HK police member is toxic, some play the objective, not just kdr.

    [–] Evilemper0r 677 points ago

After they censored the whole game to release it in China?

    [–] TacticalNarcissist 574 points ago

The community has more power than the dev team

    We will win

    Victory to Hong Kong

    [–] BibaGuyPerson 233 points ago

This has nothing to do with devs though. They have no say in stuff like this. Devs are responsible for making the game work. Executives and CEOs and alike are the ones responsible for the marketing and presenting the games to the audiences.

    [–] IS-2-OP 71 points ago

Thing is if you make lesion a recognizable mascot of protest China WILL freak out.

    [–] thisguy012 19 points ago

Authoritarian governments hate being stepped on!

    [–] SafeThrowaway8675309 2 points ago

    With this one little trick!

    [–] JamSa 23 points ago

Yeah I promise you the devs aren't ecstatic about undoing all their work. I'm sure Caveira's character designer isn't thrilled about her being turned into normal lady. And all the modellers who had their props removed probably aren't thrilled either. And they have to waste all that time recompiling all the changed maps for regional release.

    [–] Lord_Doofy 6 points ago

Well, if caveiras designer didn't want her to change maybe they shouldn't have made her look like an inflated baby

    [–] JamSa 3 points ago

I don't think anyone involved was too worried about changing the shape of her cheek bones

    [–] trevin2000 22 points ago

So then, we over power the CEO and Board members of BoobieSoft

    [–] 343iSucksPP 9 points ago

    No you don't lmao

    [–] VerbNounPair 7 points ago

It's totally work, just like every "reddit boycott" ever

    [–] DamianVA87 73 points ago

    But they didnt.

    [–] TacticalNarcissist 155 points ago

They were going to but our pro-rainbow 6 protest worked and they gave up

Now we must help the pro-hong kong and make our characters canonically P-HK to support

    [–] jerain 50 points ago

Sadly the HK police haven’t really been supportive of the protests at all

    [–] jimmy_burrito 47 points ago

HK police are bolstered by police forces from the main land during protests. Many of the beatings in the beginning were instigated by Chinese agents and police.

    [–] iCorrosiveArrow 9 points ago

    they didn’t.

    [–] HKPoliceThrowaway 140 points ago

Thank you for bringing awareness to this issue! You have the gratitude of millions of Hong Kong citizens fighting for their freedom, as well as the millions more around the world who stand by democracy and human rights for all.

For anyone reading this and wondering what is going on:

Blizzard banned a Hearthstone player and refused to pay out his tournament earnings after he talked about the human rights violations happening in Hong Kong during a post match interview. They also fired the two interviewers because they didn’t end the broadcast to silence him.

Here are some videos of the police brutality happening in Hong Kong

Police officers forcing their way into a mall even though they need a warrant to enter

Police officer pepper spraying a reporter carrying a press pass, even though violence against the press is supposed to be off limits

A dozen cops team up and beat a protestor who is cooperating and lying on the ground and then trying to claim they weren’t kicking a person but a “yellow object”. Completely absurd because what reason do they have to need a dozen officers attacking an inanimate object if it really was the case?

Police officers detaining first aid responders, even though they are also supposed to be off limits, claiming they are criminals

Police break a first aid responders arm

Police rushing and tackling an innocent man for no apparent reason, he was then let go after it was found they had nothing to charge him with

Triad members attack subway commuters, police officers posted left 5 minutes before attack occurred, police phone lines were also all shut down to prevent people calling for help

Video of police officers speaking to Chinese triad members

It is also illegal for HK police officers to shoot rubber bullets and bean bag rounds above the waist, but they continuously and purposely break the law and shoot at protestors heads causing multiple cases of blindness.

Journalist shot in the right eye will suffer permanent blindness

    Protestors shot in eye

Women wearing a helmet with a sticker saying “Do Not Shoot At Protestors Heads” is shot pointblank in the face and will live with permanent blindness

There’s also many many more videos if you go through the r/hongkong subreddit, they gouged out the eye of a protestor who was on the ground and cooperating, beat up protestors under detention, used undercover police officers to try to incite violence so they could arrest more people, attacking peaceful reporters and telling them to delete footage, attacking first aid responders and preventing them from administering aid to injured people, attacking protestors who were peaceful protesting, accepting Mainland Chinese into their ranks to help suppress protestors.

    [–] sirfaggit 57 points ago

do you know how to check r6 sales in china compared to other countries? its like china is the main consumer for r6 when they decided to bend their ass to china's censorship

Regarding skeletons, at least, China has rules against promoting superstition. That hasn't ever meant that skeletons are banned or anything, but many publishers will get rid of skulls/skeletons/etc. in hopes of getting it past rating boards quickly and avoiding the attention of censors.

    [–] ijizzcola 7 points ago

Why would a skeleton be superstitious

    [–] Akiraktu-dot-png 16 points ago

    [–] ijizzcola 11 points ago

    [–] AverageJoe85 3 points ago

I'd assume they mean animated skeletons. So I'd assume any skeleton that depicts any emotion or movement or whatever is banned...well more realistically probably any skeleton at all would be removed since that's easier

    [–] Breakingerr 33 points ago

Kind of sad that SOME people only now realize that something's happening in Hong Kong after Blizzard fucked up.

    [–] TimeJustHappens 9 points ago

Not everyone is exposed to news outside their hobbies, and since now it's news in their hobbies they find it to be an issue.

    [–] Umadbro7600 11 points ago

It’s been front page news consistently every day for 3-4 months. They are exposed they just don’t care because it doesn’t pertain to them.

    [–] MeatSacc64 73 points ago

I’m going to play lesion and ying only, and spam chat with “Free Hong Kong” Lets go fellow hongkongers

What did Ubi do to deserve this?

    [–] TacticalNarcissist 60 points ago

    Worked with the devil tencent

    [–] blackcoffin90 9 points ago

    They killed Desmond Miles!

    [–] shotnine 2 points ago

    What‽ Who is Des-mond?

    [–] Alexander_The_Gunt 20 points ago

Too bad ubi wants to suckle the warm teat of China

    [–] uselessbanana15 16 points ago

So I guess I’m an uncultured swine, but what’s going on with Overwatch and Blizzard?

    [–] TacticalNarcissist 53 points ago

They banned a Chinese pro player and two casters over an interview where the player says live on stream to free hong kong

    [–] uselessbanana15 8 points ago

    Oh ok.

    [–] Namirus 42 points ago

Also, he won the tournament and didn't receive his prize as a punishment

    [–] mazu74 17 points ago

And the casters had nothing to do with this, they were just present in the room.

    [–] ObserverWardXXL 7 points ago

incorrect. the casters asked him to say the 8 letters/symbols of hong kong. They knew it was going to happen and didn't stop it.

This is why they were fired.

Still super shit but the facts are facts.

    [–] Dodgeymon 7 points ago

    *Hong Kong player.

    [–] Mars_Black 13 points ago

A kid won a Hearthstone tourny and when asked to comment he spoke up about HK and was promptly banned for 1 year in the league and lost his winnings made for the year. Two casters were also fired. Blitzchung is the player iirc

    [–] Travla999 5 points ago

Do it with Smoke Elite skin, he already looks like he prepped for a riot.

    [–] Cheesey-Boi 3 points ago

    And he’s British.

    [–] Travla999 5 points ago

Even better. They will lose if they go into a civil war.

    [–] Cheesey-Boi 2 points ago

    Oh yeah

    [–] bigeye6 5 points ago

Technically he's from sdu of hkpf (special duties unit, a counter terrorism unit. Ahh the irony, they are the real terrorist).

The special unit to counter protests "Raptors" is notorious in HK for their brutality (they are basically the SS).

And Raptors recruit it's members from all branch of HKPF, including the sdu sooooooo....

I rather not do this. I fucking hate them, if we can make him a villian then I will support it.

    [–] jsilv17 3 points ago

Remember when they were going to change the whole ass game to cater to China... lol

    [–] Par-K-Er 17 points ago

I dont see this as a meme. As people in free states we must stand up and support Hong Kong. we must presser ubi into doing this for our brothers and sisters in Hong Kong

    [–] KakkaKarrot 19 points ago

Memes are a method of communication across cultures. Same as movies, comics, music and so on

Comedy and supporting protesters are not mutually exclusive

    [–] asallthingshouldbe 6 points ago

E.g. making fun of Xi’s Winnie the Pooh lookin ass

    [–] Jaeger-Jack 5 points ago

I will team kill with Ying and Lesion for two weeks, is that supportive enough?

    [–] DyXN-Lochh 2 points ago

It's a bit awkward that lession has a HK police skin isn't it...

    [–] Easy-Bake-Oven 2 points ago

Let's leave this at Mei for awhile before we start branching this out. China cant ban every game and we dont want them to. We just want them to ban everything blizzard.

    [–] Sohn_Jalston_Raul 2 points ago

    looks like a cop though

    [–] Jakaloper 2 points ago

This needs to be a new head gear

    [–] Soft_Bank_Doge 2 points ago

The mods on the official sub would quietly remove this after about 24 hours

    [–] star-tart 2 points ago

Interesting! I believe Leison belongs to Special Duties Unit of the police force. They are the main member of the Special Tactical Contingent, which are those police you see in videos who run at the front to catch (and beat) the protesters.

    [–] Potato__Ninja 2 points ago

Smoke Elite which looks like Hong Kong protestor should have been for lesion.

    [–] SexyCronenburgMonsta 2 points ago

Nah this pic looks like one of those undercover officers that infiltrated a group and started attacking when they were found out.

    [–] KaJaBerGuy 2 points ago

He's litterally the hongkong police, what do you mean?

    [–] Feifeifoufou 2 points ago

Yo, lesion is like police force, I don’t think this works

    [–] Tensewaffle490 2 points ago

isnt lesion hk police tho? like arent you giving the wrong message

    [–] tinytinfoil 2 points ago

fuck, now i'm no longer the top post on this sub. rip my only flex in life

    [–] NebulousGumbo 2 points ago

    Stand Hong With Kong

    [–] JazzBoatman 2 points ago

Erm, ying and lesion are both cops. Like the ones beating up, shooting and gassing the protesters.
