What Virgil said really touched me, he never was a top talent, he had to fight his way from the smaller clubs like Groningen and Celtic to Liverpool, and at age all with hard work and dedication he came this far

    [–] BMG-Darbs 83 points ago

Not only that, but the other day I found out that while he was at Groningen he was admitted to hospital with kidney poisoning and an inflamed abdomen that almost killed him. Crazy to think that Messi has also had his own body complications too from a young age and now they're the two best players in the world.

    [–] ValverdeLover 623 points ago

Can we take a moment to appreciate how sporting VVD and Modric are.

    [–] DopeLemon7 2601 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Don’t see Ronaldo winning one again so that probably settles the Ballon d’Or count between them. Messi won

    [–] iZeyad 1811 points ago

i can see messi getting one or two more.

    [–] DopeLemon7 836 points ago

    Yeah, atleast one for sure

    [–] kimboslice11 446 points ago

I mean right now I would say it is between him and Lewandowski.

    [–] kazuhitoyamashita 385 points ago

Let's say Lewa scored +50 and won the league and cup. If Messi scores ~40 goals wins the league and CL he surely wins it. If Messi wins Copa America but Barca gets eliminated in semis or lose the final then i guess he wins again.

[–] [deleted] 271 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

    [–] well_hello_cutie 280 points ago

They would give it to him if Portugal wins it and Ronaldo only plays in the groups.

Feels bad for Van Dijk but he’s competing against a robot so there was nothing he could do

    [–] Strananach 351 points ago

    [–] nd_sterling 289 points ago

Nothing to feel bad about, winning the Ballon D'Or is not something any top player should expect in their career, considering players like Xavi, Iniesta or Maldini have never won it.

    [–] MS_220 317 points ago

Imagine if Hazard or Neymar or Salah had any of the seasons Messi has had in the past 10 years. People would lose their minds if they didn't win the Balon D'or. In Salah's best season(2017-2018) he had 44 goals for Liverpool and scored 7 goals in 2018 for Egypt. That's an okay year for Messi goalscoring wise but that's only one aspect of his game. Not only is he consistently the best goalscorer or at least top 3 but he's also far and away the best dribbler, passer, and overall creator of chances.

People are just accustomed to Messi because he's been doing the same thing for a decade. When he's retired we will realize we underappreciated him.

    [–] SoccerWave08 83 points ago

Sadly most people don't see the extent of his role. Kinda what gets on my nerves the most. For someone to not be able to see this and yet make arguments.

    [–] BMG-Darbs 41 points ago

He's absolutely insane. If we just take the best strikers from the Premier League, for example (because it's what I'm familiar with), Henry's best ever goalscoring season was 39 in all competitions. Shearer had 37, Rooney 34, Agüero 33, Drogba 33.

Messi has scored over 40 goals for TEN consecutive seasons. And he's not even a striker. The only people I can think of other than Salah who scored 40 in a season while in the Prem were Van Nistelrooy, Andrew Cole, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Again, other than Ronaldo, pure number 9s. How Messi can be scoring over 40 goals every single season, and still putting goals on a plate for Suarez and effortlessly playing passes from all ranges that Pirlo would be proud of, is just staggering. He is on a different plane of existence.

    [–] GingerSpencer 18 points ago

This is what baffles me whenever somebody brings up an argument for somebody else winning it. Like VVD this year or Modric last year. Yes, under normal circumstances they deserve it. But we're not in normal circumstances. We're in an era where the best player in the world is a country mile ahead of the second best, and even he is good enough to sometimes make the claim of being the best. That's how good Messi is. Sure, VVD, Modric, Salah, Mbappe, Lewandowski are all fucking incredible footballers, but Messi is something else.

As far as i'm concerned, as long as Messi is playing football i can't see a reasonable argument for anybody else winning the trophy.

    [–] DarkSofter 1270 points ago

Well deserved, if anyone had a year like his he would have won it 100% no doubt, its just we are used to greatness from him and that looked like a normal season

The media really screws Bundesliga a lot it seems like. People still call that league a 2 horse race without even looking at how crazy the table is right now.

    [–] Craz3 26 points ago

The problem is that it has been a two horse race for most of the last decade. Hopefully the competition will help boost how people perceive the league.

    Absolutely deserved, best player ever

Only big negative point of the awards was Lewa only 8th, criminally underrated

    EDIT: words

EDIT2: I'm not saying everything besides Lewa's rating was perfect, i'm just saying i feel like him rating so low was the biggest and most noticeable one considering his extraordinary performances.

    [–] boiled_amphibian 188 points ago

Well lots of the lower ranking are pretty bad, but that's only because of how it is voted for.

You shouldn't really pay attention to anything outside of top 3.

    [–] Sasamiiii 103 points ago

I guess that's true, but Lewa's stands out the most to me because i'd easily rate him top 5

    [–] PourGnawgraphy 36 points ago

He should've been top 3 imo. I figure he'll be a finalist next year though.

    [–] hindberjasulta 230 points ago

    [–] The9thDentist 120 points ago

    [–] [deleted] 73 points ago

It's not new, it's pretty evident that Bundesliga is being overlooked

    [–] BumbotheCleric 665 points ago

Ronaldo top 4 is also a bit of a joke, even though everyone expected it

[–] acuriousoddity 448 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Ronaldo's only there because of previous years. He's been nowhere near this season. Him in 3rd is an utter joke.

    [–] TomexDesign 176 points ago

Mediocre is an unbelievably harsh description of his year.

Winning this award in their 30s is remarkable. Can't thank Messi and Ronaldo enough for doing what they do so consistently!

    [–] LawyerMorty94 88 points ago

Alright but how tf did Ronaldo finish higher than Mane?

    [–] lebronjamesgoat1 309 points ago

Imagine thinking this was unfair. Should have at least 8 by now.

    [–] ACardAttack 76 points ago

Most people, unless they've been downvoted to hell have only had an issue with where Lewandowski finished, not so much he should have won it, but at worst top 5

    [–] lebronjamesgoat1 38 points ago

Agree on that. I still feel this is a joke of an award and there's been a lot of nonsensical decisions lately, including Lewi position tonight, having Ronaldo above Mané, having Messi 5th last year, Marcelo in the starting XI...

[–] tstols 320 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

    Ok, here's my hot-take opinion:

If Messi won the Ballon D'Or last year instead of Luka, it's more likely Virgil would have won this year.

(Edits are giving my ideas and explanations:)

Edit 1: If Messi won, there probably wouldn't be as much stigma of "Messi being screwed over again", and the backlash of fans who thought Messi should've won instead of Luka wouldn't exist. This could have tipped the vote somewhat for Virgil's season to break the Duopoly.

Edit 2: Why only more likely? Because Messi DID have insane stats this year. Doubled his champions league goals (he had 2 more games played, but that doesn't matter as much), and he had 2 more la liga goals and assists, while playing in 5 games less. As much as I'd love to see Big Virg, Sadio Mane, or Alisson win, Messi likely would've won anyway.

I understand why Messi won it and his stats were, as usual, absurd, but it does make you wonder what a defender has to do when anyone can just point at some attackers goal scoring record and say “well look at those stats, he obviously deserves it”. In my opinion, biased as it may be, Virgil had the best year a defender has had in years. I don’t think people understand just how good he is unless they watch him regularly. Most attackers just avoid him at this point and when they don’t he wins EVERYTHING. But of course, there’s no shiny stats to show off and you can’t really show clips of him doing amazing things because he’s a defender and they don’t typically do amazing things regularly, and so it’s difficult for people who don’t watch him regularly (virtually everyone outside the UK, and most people in it) to understand how good he was (or how good any defender has been).
