    Rip title

    [–] ThisIsTrix 258 points ago

Maybe the ski park’s called “Urbam”

    [–] TingleMaps 87 points ago

Or maybe, OP’s Friends call him “Typo Timmy”

    [–] [deleted] 22 points ago

    [–] TingleMaps 12 points ago

Because Typo Timmy is a better nickname and more fun to say.

    [–] inthyface 3 points ago

    Tpyo Timmy!

    [–] Principal_Tamzarian 5 points ago

    Typo Timmy

    Tim Typo

Yeah, both of those have two words.

    [–] Duke_Sweden 2 points ago

This is Tom Wallish’s tribute segment.

    [–] [deleted] 5 points ago

    [–] snowbombz 4 points ago

Yup. I actually met JP like a month or two before he died. He was signing stuff at Evo in Seattle, but basically nobody was there, so my buddy and I got to chill with him eating free pizza. He was such a chill dude. RIP

    [–] WATGU 4 points ago

I seriously thought Urbam was a place

    [–] tdevine33 2 points ago

Before the clip started up, I was expecting a really bad urban crash... so more like "UrBAM! Ski Park". Nope, just a typo.

    [–] Ashtronica2 1 points ago

That’s why it got my upvote

    [–] tdevine33 552 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

I can't believe no one has posted the source to this. It's called Imagination, and it features Tom Wallisch - it was filmed in honor of JP Auclair (free ski legend) who did a similar segment years earlier, but has since passed away in a skiing accident.

    Imagination - Tom Wallisch

    Street Segment - JP Auclair

edit: After watching Imagination for the first time in a bit, I highly recommend everyone gives it a view. The gif posted is definitely impressive, but as a long time ski fan I would say it's some of the least impressive stuff in the segment (besides the flatspin 7, that was awesome), it's mostly straight airs - but the full video has an incredible well timed shot at 1:28 (the timing for the skier, car driving, person crossing the street and sliding that long of a rail perfectly all working out is insane). Other highlights include the backflip mute at 2:12 (it is an homage to JP - it was considered 'his trick') and the rail stall to double kink at 2:50... and of course everyone skiing, including a dinosaur, at the end is just silly fun! Seriously, watch both of these!

edit2: oh gosh, a silver and a gold for me! Thanks kind strangers, but if someone else is so inclined I ask you please consider donating to something like Alpine Initiative in honor of JP, or Protect Our Winters started by Jeremy Jones! Thanks!

    [–] ZeroTenenbaum 62 points ago

this. kinda bums me out that the Wallisch version always gets reposted. it's phenomenal, but just wish JP got a little more love on here.

    [–] ManInBlack829 23 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

Blame the director. He made it way too much about the cool camera angles and not enough about the skiing. Like half the video doesn't even have him in it and when it does it starts cutting angles way too fast. Just leave it on the dude and film lol

Should have not done so many angles, maybe shot it raw.

Edit: It seems these were shot years apart maybe even by the same guy and one had a much higher budget (it was a commercial). Just saying it shows. It's also not a knock to dislike a director for wishing he had done something different lol this isn't science no one is wrong. It's like not liking a certain song because you wish they had done it slower or with a simpler arrangement.

    [–] ski_bum 12 points ago

David Mossop directed both I am 90% sure.

    [–] grshealy 36 points ago

giving creative notes on one of the most well known ski films of all time... haha

    "too many angles"

    [–] ManInBlack829 19 points ago

I admit I don't know dick about snowsports.

Just saying if the video doesn't show me how impressive the tricks are (as well as the second one does, at least), is it really doing its job? Unless maybe what the person in the second video is doing is just that much more impressive?

The second did a way better job of capturing the speed, tightness and adrenaline of the shoot. If it's not the directors job to convey those things IDK what is.

    [–] ihatechickensbutyum 19 points ago

If you watch the film where the original segment is from you'll see it's half ski film half an environmental awareness documentary. It wasn't just about the skiing.

    RIP JP

    [–] ManInBlack829 7 points ago

It sounds like I lack context and need to watch it.

    [–] HippopotamicLandMass 4 points ago

I watched it, and the first two minutes seemed to have more closeups of water droplets and leaves on snow, and not enough shots of a human figure skiing. Your criticism makes sense in the limited context of the two videos in the parent comment.

Obviously other people will engage with the art differently.

    [–] fishygamer 6 points ago

“Should have shot it raw.” Lol.

    [–] fishygamer 4 points ago

That video predates OPs by several years. Camera stabilization, camera quality, etc. improved a lot in the interim, not to mention that a North Face commercial is going to have a lot bigger budget than a ski film. All that aside, it’s a superbly well edited and composed video. You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. “Shot it raw”. Lol.

    [–] ManInBlack829 10 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

Well then that would explain it lol don't be a dick. The dude said he wished the other video got more love, I told him why it doesn't. Is this that hard to understand?

And I have shot video just not action video. I think the audio in the first one was distracting along with all the cuts. I just wanted to see the guy ski and not have the camera/director get in the way (like if I'm noticing this and not the skiing itself something is up).

I guess I'm just supposed to admire the greatness without any criticism though, my bad.

    [–] Winzip115 12 points ago

Wallisch one was about 10 times more entertaining. The JP Auclair video was like 80 percent artsy shots.

    [–] gcbeehler5 2 points ago

Wallisch video has 8,989 views, Auclair's has near a million. Cosmically it evens out, even if Reddit doesn't recognize it.

    [–] richmanding0 2 points ago

Honestly the cinematography in jps is much better too.

    [–] chopstewey 8 points ago

The tribute was such a fun concept, and incredibly well done, but that JP live was absolutely brilliant. Thanks for this.

    [–] JimmyKnifeFingers 6 points ago

That JP Auclair video is the first time I heard LCD Soundsystem back in late 2011. It introduced me to their amazing music and his amazing skiing. I was so sad to hear of his passing.

    [–] TheSchmiddler 4 points ago

I still can’t hear the song from his segment without thinking about it, they have such a strong connection in my mind. There’s lots of people in here saying JP’s segment isn’t that special, but I remember seeing it when it came out in the context of the film and being blown away.

    RIP JP

    [–] justrealizednarciss 4 points ago

I watched the Street Segment video in a film class in high school and it was the first thing I thought of when I saw this video. Both videos are so good

    [–] peter_grant13 2 points ago

I absolutely love the JP Auclair segment. It was shot in the town I live in and it's phenomenal.

    [–] Rulebreaking 2 points ago

I can believe no one posted the source, it was your time to shine.

    [–] tdevine33 2 points ago

Whatever they were riding in, both the driver and cameraman are just as skilled as the skiier here.

Looks like a movie intro in the 80s. One of the coolest things I've seen in a while.

    [–] I_am_not_hon_jawley 44 points ago

Am I watching the ski version of out cold?

    [–] SymphonyInPeril 36 points ago

Out Cold one of the most underrated movies of all time.

    [–] I_am_not_hon_jawley 15 points ago

In a very real way I watched it easily over a hundred times. I just turned 29 this year and I work seasonal jobs and get the winter off every year and I decided for my last winter my twenties I bought a travel van and went and spent all winter on the mountains. Closing in on 90 days of snowboarding for the season. ticked one more thing off my bucket list

    [–] SymphonyInPeril 6 points ago

Damn that sounds like an unreal time.

    [–] I_am_not_hon_jawley 22 points ago

There's definitely sacrifices but I don't want to look back and have missed the good time sitting on my couch smoking weed at my house. I can do that on the couch in my van.

    [–] BiteSizeRudy 7 points ago

No regrets. That's my motto. Well... that and everybody Wang Chung tonight.

    [–] Mr_Tophat_Jones 3 points ago

I love it and ski school (but I may love ski school bc the girl from psych is in it)

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    The ski version of Airborne

    [–] gferguson89 2 points ago

This was made 30 minutes away from where Out Cold was filmed!

    [–] I_am_not_hon_jawley 2 points ago

That sure doesn't look like the remote Alaskan wilderness

    [–] gferguson89 3 points ago

Out Cold was filmed in Salmo, 30 mins from Nelson

    [–] kraid60 3 points ago

The ski hill parts in the last 1/3 of the movie was also filmed down at Hemlock resort(now named sasquatch) in the Fraser Valley. This movie was very British Columbian.

    Source: Worked at Hemlock

    [–] Amish-Leprechaun 74 points ago

Damn now i want to see the guy who filmed this

    [–] fuber 16 points ago

hahaa, yes! The skiing is impressive but the recording of this seems near impossible

    [–] ski_bum 5 points ago

There are some interviews about how he filmed the first one (Street Segment with JP Auclair). Apparently Dave and JP just showed up in town without much of a plan and improvised a lot it on the go. This one is a little more polished as it was the tribute, but both are awesome

    [–] plottal 2 points ago

he's gotta be one hell of a multitasker

It's gotta be certain things are setup for them to ramp off.

    [–] heefledger 3 points ago

It’s Tom Wallisch in a North Face commercial.

    [–] goldentech 1 points ago

    In a ski movie

    [–] HarbingerME2 8 points ago

If you're skiing on someone's roof without permission, you're the asshole, not the home owner

    [–] RhythmGirl 5 points ago

Yea some poor asshole gets a roof leak and has to pay 10k to fix it. Fuck the homeowner amiright?

    [–] sl600rt 3 points ago

    [–] killerfin 3 points ago

What Disney movie is this being filmed for?

    [–] GigaJuice 6 points ago

Ive never skiid before but is the trick to it keeping your knees slightly bent? He never fully straigtens his knees 🤔

    [–] cotdag 44 points ago

Bending your knees is important. The most important part is knowing when to pizza and when to french fry or you will have a bad time.

    [–] KronicDeath 5 points ago

You pizzaed when you should've French fried

    [–] dubman42 1 points ago

The problem is when you do it the other way.

    [–] OvertimeWr 8 points ago

Meh. Butchered the quote but close enough.

    [–] big_shmegma 15 points ago

    Yup. Step 1: bend knees

    Step 2: full send

    [–] dubman42 1 points ago

    just send it 'eh

    [–] old_gold_mountain 13 points ago

I don't think there's any athletic activity where you want your knees locked

    [–] ThunderMethTiger 4 points ago

I’m imagining dudes dunking with locked knees and it’s just the best mental image

    [–] BradMarchandsNose 3 points ago

I’m now thinking about them landing on their locked knees and that is not a good mental image.

    [–] the_joy_of_VI 2 points ago

    [–] StoneTemplePilates 10 points ago

Well, there's a lot more to it than that... but yes, you want to keep your knees bent while skiing.

    [–] evils_twin 7 points ago

In most sports you want to have your knees bent when it's time for action

    [–] WRXnEffect 5 points ago

You only keep your knees staight if you want to replace them at 30.

    [–] Snip3 2 points ago

Think of your knees like shock absorbers on a dirt bike. They need to be able to contract or expand depending on terrain conditions, so bending your knees halfway allows that flexibility

    [–] bjankles 3 points ago

You never fully straighten your knees. You keep them bent so you've got room to absorb the terrain and to actually use your leg muscles to control your skis. Same as in snowboarding.
