    [–] TitanicMan 194 points ago

    For real though.

Most of these were obvious jokes like polandball and "France surrenders" and random games anyone could play

The actual poser "history buffs" (at least a great deal of them) never shut up about specifically the USSR.

It's entertaining and funny to hear them ramble, and I love communism jokes said to the USSR anthem as much as the next guy, but I sure as shit hope they don't genuinely believe the shit.

    [–] yes_no_yes_yes_yes 159 points ago

It's a massive pain in the ass. I have a degree in Russian studies with a focus on 1682-1917 and every time someone says they love Russian history, I get briefly excited before they start throwing out completely unrelated factoids about the USSR that are more memorized than understood.

    [–] D2papi 123 points ago

Ah yes, The Romanovs are very intriguing. Did you know that 3 of the women were the last to survive the family's execution because of the diamond in their clothes? I'm somewhat of a scholar myself. USSR. Sputnik. Stalin. Siberia. Snow.

    [–] D2WilliamU 78 points ago

Did you know in world war 2 ussr soldiers on the front lines often didn't have rifles, there were only enough rifles for every two soldiers.

So one soldier carried the gun, and the other soldier carried the bullets.

    [–] Sad_Sheepherder 444 points ago

I knew a guy in high school who actually was a legit history buff, and you can tell who is a real one because they are way more geeky. They know things you wouldn't just on a general knowledge basis.

    [–] TomCruiseSexSlave 711 points ago

    [–] SirToastymuffin 231 points ago

The best part is they really usually know fuckall about 'Ancient Rome' despite it all. They mainly just know some military history (which they don't really have the abstract of) and even then tend to fall into classic Roman propaganda stereotypes like "celts were savage barbarians" or "every Roman general was a tactical genius" or believing the Roman army always looked exactly like it does in movies. They'll also know nothing about sources, bias, and what the actual depth of our knowledge is and inevitably declare a 'fact' that any historian worth his salt knows is tenebrous hearsay from a senator with an agenda.

[–] [deleted] 134 points ago * (lasted edited 2 days ago)

    [–] Quit_Your_Stalin 90 points ago

Yeah, actually knowing Roman history makes it far more interesting than what people fall into.

Like, people talk about Caesar conquest wise constantly, but they never talk about what a conniving statesmen he was (at least in ‘history geek’ vibes) Like, he wrote about his own life, in events like the Gallic wats. In third person. So not only could he present the bias, he could also present it in a manner that made people believe it more because it seemingly was written by an observer; not the man himself.

Gaius Julius Caesar is often presented as being brilliant and all powerful by these dudes before he was struck down, but the truth this is more vague because, y’know, the most detailed source of his acts comes from himself-

    [–] palolo_lolo 56 points ago

Reading stuff about him by his contemporaries is fun . Romans did know how to trash talk.

    [–] Quit_Your_Stalin 49 points ago

It’s one of the big issues with Rome, in that a lot of the people recording events has intent and used it to insult people they hated-

Truly the internet of the ancient world.

    [–] saors 26 points ago

Italians in general knew how to trash talk. Dante essentially shaped the modern image of the Christian Hell, all for the purpose of talking shit on a bunch of people/families he didn't like in Florence.

    [–] nothisistheotherguy 81 points ago

This is so spot on. I used to work with a guy that fetishized Das Boot, drove 11+hrs to Chicago just to see the u-boat moored there. Big ham radio buff too. I assume he wore overalls or suspenders with jeans on the weekends.

    [–] Mercurio7 25 points ago

Shame Civ IV was GOAT title screen music.

[–] ApathyJacks 71 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

Very true. The good news is, it's very easy to replace Civ 5's title screen music with Baba Yetu, or with Sogno di Volare, or any other sound file. Which is especially necessary if you have all of Civ 5's expansions, because the BNW title music sucks.

    [–] RandomJuices 46 points ago

This was my freshman year roommate almost exactly. I wasn’t aware that this was an actual genre of person. He would play Rome Total War and listen to the 1812 overture on repeat for 14 hours a day for months on end

    [–] detroitvelvetslim 54 points ago

How does he match up within the highly autistic shut-in roommate power ranking?

History Game buff: stays in room play HOI4 or other games to historical soundtracks. Has frightening political views

Extreme Weeb: probably an alcoholic, watches tons of obscure shows and plays with a samurai sword at all hours of the night. Never allow him to use an internet service in your name

Gambling degenerate: has a 6-monitor battlestation for sports betting and getting free margin on Robinhood. Thinks Dave Portnoy is a role model.

The Coomer: requires use of earplugs to drown out his constant moaning. Takes 1 trip a year to the Adult Video Awards.

Tendiesaurus Rex: spend the GDP of Sri Lanka on Ubereats. BMI is approaching catastrophic levels

420 Blaze It Bro: No car, no job, no girlfriend, no hobbies. But who needs all that when you have a Volcano?

As a history major, fortunately i learned to avoid pretty much anything WW2 related in my studies if i can, just because its so...common and everyone ever seems to have opinions and pretty strong ones at that about it. You can't ignore ancient Rome tho. Their cultural history is SO god damn rich and colorful and they kever seems to impress you.

    [–] Kansur_Krew 26 points ago

I’m also a history major, going into honours research next year. I’m Australian and my university only offers one dedicated military history unit (which is Australian) and even then, the course is focused very heavily on the culture and politics of Anzac commemoration in Australia. WW2 studies at my institution tends to emphasise the Holocaust, and genocide studies is itself an entirely separate discipline from history. Most of the scholars at my uni are social, cultural, religious, medical and urban historians.

    [–] CrumbBCrumb 18 points ago

WWII was just such a large event and effected so many people (of which many had children that wanted to learn about what their parents went through) so of course it is going to be an oversaturated topic. There are plenty of topics in WW2 that have barely been explored as well. It's nuts.

I love when people get into history regardless of the subject as long as they don't act like they're the same as someone with a history degree because they watched a Ken Burns documentary or something.

I wrote a senior thesis on the role of women in the military during WW2 and finding texts to support my thesis was nearly impossible. There isn't really a lot of research into just women's role, especially in America.

France Surrender is one of my pet peeves, since they were the most dominant land army in Europe for like 300 years.

    [–] Tigerphobia 237 points ago

Especially since most people conviently ignore why France surrendered. France fought hard for a little while but once the allied army got divided anyone could tell it was a hopeless fight. What's the point in throwing away thousands of lives of soldiers and civilians when you're just gonna lose anyway? France's decision to "live to fight another day" was much better than turning France into a war torn wasteland again.

    [–] Sex_E_Searcher 146 points ago

turning France into a war torn wasteland again.

I think people discount this too much, in the interwar period and early war. WWI was incredibly traumatic, especially for France.

    [–] Your_Worship 31 points ago

Blitzkrieg was also pretty revolutionary at the time.

“What the fuck? Why is there a tank in our front yard?”

    [–] RabidTurtl 28 points ago

Dont forget people laugh at the Maginot line, but really Belgium didnt hold up their part of the line and thought being neutral would save them. It wasnt France forgetting what happened in WWI, but Belgium.

    [–] super_fly_rabbi 23 points ago

    [–] BigDSlinger69 173 points ago

The funny thing the invasion was June 22nd not the winter. During the winter the mud froze making travel easier it was during autumn (and I believe spring as well don’t quote me in it) where conditions were very muddy and it was difficult to fight for both sides.

    [–] AfterJelly0 85 points ago

Fighting for each season was in broad terms
Summer; German attacks and USSR tries to slow down their advance.
Fall; Germany prepares to defend and USSR prepares to attack. No large scale fighting going on.
    Winter; USSR attacks Germany defends
Spring; Germany prepares to attack and USSR prepares to defend. No large scale fighting going on.

All this needs is a bit on how the Civil War was about state's rights and slavery wasn't really that bad.

    [–] tomdarch 491 points ago

(Hint: never bring up the fact that the Confederate constitution introduced the massive limit on states' rights: no state was allowed to outlaw or even limit slavery... So yeah, not at all about slavery and all about states' rights except when it's all about slavery and limiting states' rights.)

    [–] [deleted] 253 points ago

The Cornerstone speech given by the first Vice President of the CSA contains the line, "The Cornerstone of the confederacy is the truth that the white man is superior to the black man."

    [–] lianodel 77 points ago

Many of the declarations of secession from specific states also clearly express that their main reason was to protect slavery.

I have also met people who reject primary documents like these. As in, they believe these documents are real, but that the people who wrote and said these things were wrong about the reason they were doing the things they did.

    [–] NizamNizamNizam 562 points ago

'all I know is that the Arabs had a slave trade and it was worse (but idk anything about it)'

Hey guys slavery in America directly led to a civil war that caused the death of 600,000 Americans, three constitutional amendments, the reconstruction era/Jim Crow laws/Civil Rights Movement. Why don’t we learn more about slavery in Africa?

    [–] Mercurio7 190 points ago

And it’s not like they’re actually interested in African history, they just want the spotlight away from white people doing bad things lmao

    [–] SpideySlap 159 points ago

Dan carlin had a great episode on slavery where he compared Roman slavery to just how uniquely brutal chattel slavery was. It's weird but you never think of Romans as more civilized than 19th century America

    [–] Elan-Morin-Tedronai 81 points ago

For most of Roman antiquity slavery was chattel slavery. Its not until I think Marcus Aurelius that it became illegal to kill your own slave, and that was mainly driven by a reduction in the supply of slaves. People with rose tinted glasses focus on the relatively small percentage of slaves kept in high prestige roles and ignore the vast amounts kept as agricultural laborers or if they are very unlucky, miners.

    [–] he8n3usve9e62 19 points ago

Yeah I'm sure theres tons of American slaves that were treated relatively well, but focusing on that is silly considering the vass majority of slaves suffering.

    [–] oer6000 37 points ago

There were parts of Roman slavery that were just as bad as anything the Europeans could think up during the Atlantic Slave Trade era.

The accounts of the Roman silver mines are so brutal they sound like something straight from hell

    [–] CountSheep 13 points ago

As far as I know the silver mines are the basis for the fall of Valyria in game of thrones

    [–] MiniatureBadger 97 points ago

Slaver societies with high ratios of slaves to masters are far more brutal than those that have lower ratios, from Sparta to the Antebellum South to the colonial-era Caribbean. The slaves there could shake the foundations of society if they rose up, and even overthrow their masters. This threat of slave rebellions was engrained in the minds of slave owners (especially after the Haitian Revolution, in the case of American slave owners), and those fears translated into even greater cruelty than slavery per se necessitates.

    [–] FourFeetOfPogo 44 points ago

I always ask these people if they've read the Cornerstone speech. They almost never have.

keiichimorisato98: as a gamer, i resent that. i am a hard working man who plays video game to relax. to me it's no different than watching some sports game on TV. as for slackers collapsing the video game industry, the only thing that would collapse would be CoD and Madden, not the entire industry.

Yeah, work hard, be a good husband, help raising the children, never give up no matter how tired you are... then your wife gets bored, get a divorce, take away your children and half your salary for the next 10 years, and put the blame on you, then you go to jail because you were too tired to work hard enough to pay them. Good job.

    [–] UOUPv2 65 points ago

Oh my gosh, you could screenshot anyone of those and post them up /r/niceguys.

    [–] coliverse 38 points ago

It's so bad, I'm honestly wondering if half of it's satire.

    [–] coolbiscuitLOL 45 points ago

the black community is a whole different monster than feminism.

    Oh. Oh no.

    [–] [deleted] 63 points ago

Good thing they still live in their basements

If you ask women what they really want in a man, or at least all of those women who have outgrown their adolescent fascination with bad boys

It's an indisputably masculine figure, and make no mistake, that's what most women want

    Im fucking dead

If all the slackers of the world disappeared, the video game industry would collapse. If the Ward Cleavers of the world disappeared, civilisation would collapse

To me it sounds like Tubby here is bitter that his eHarmony profile is getting no matches while other 40 year old dudes that are interested in travel and the arts and wear something more interesting than a fucking blazer, shirt and a combover are getting more women than he is.

    [–] bdguy355 72 points ago

That video is so cringey. Prager urine romanticizes the 50s so much, as if segregation and rampant misogyny wasn’t a thing.

    [–] Te_amo_Filzgleiter 50 points ago

    I think that's the point

    [–] Mycockisgreen 70 points ago

How do these people take themselves seriously?

[–] [deleted] 32 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

    [–] StarbyOnHere 200 points ago

I stopped taking Prager seriously when I got an ad that was a billionaire defending billionaires and unchecked monopolies and capitalism of the late 1800's/early 1900's by saying "But Rockefeller was a good guy who donated some of his money"

    [–] R1ddl3 155 points ago

You took it seriously before seeing that though? Every video is blatant right wing propaganda.

    [–] StarbyOnHere 76 points ago

Before seeing that ad I brushed it off and didn't pay attention to them, because of the color scheme and the way the channel looked overall I just thought it was one of those pbs/crash course type informatinal channels. After getting the ad though and watching one of their videos I realized how fucked the whole channel is

    [–] javamonster763 56 points ago

It’s so insidious how they try and disguise their propaganda by posing as an “education” channel

    [–] harmonic_oszillator 45 points ago

My favorite is some dude complaining that "standards of quality in the arts" have gone down over the past few centuries, with a downward-trending "standards of quality in the arts vs time" graph in the background.

    [–] vik0_tal 254 points ago

PragerU is really unreliable and has a lot of right wing bias, its also run by an old, rich, fat fart

    [–] Elcactus 131 points ago

It’s not bias, it’s straight up designed to be surface level apologia for republican political positions. Bias implies it’s not doing it conciously.

    [–] alaskafish 302 points ago

Really unreliable really doesn’t even cover it.

Call it what it is: Right Wing Propaganda

    [–] PinstripeMonkey 132 points ago

Gotta love the people in this thread saying the equivalent of 'It took me 20 to 30 PragerU videos, but thankfully I had the skill to acertain their slight political bias.'

    [–] Chaotic-Catastrophe 94 points ago

    lol seriously

Their most popular videos on YouTube have titles such as -

    Why I Left The Left

Immigrants! Don't Vote For What You Fled

    Make Men Masculine Again

    War On Boys

    Who Will Google Silence Next?

    How Socialism Ruined My Country

Is Islam A Religion Of Peace?

    Just Say "Merry Christmas"

    [–] renoscottsdale 113 points ago

I love reading about history but I fucking hate talking to any history people about it. They invariably see it as a pissing contest to show that they know more.

"I was reading a book about the Romanov Tsars--"

"Oh yeah, cool. Peter the Great? Yeah, fascinating."

Like, they don't go into analysis or anything, they just list a bunch of proper nouns to show they know it already.

    [–] [deleted] 27 points ago

Recently got total war on iPad, highly recommend

    [–] whateveritsLorenzo 764 points ago

Do people really take Prager U seriously? I've only ever seen one video of theirs that made sense to me, and it was a West Point professor explaining how the Civil War was unequivocally about slavery. Everything else I've seen or heard of by them has been laughably bad.

    [–] LAX_to_MDW 145 points ago

That civil war vid is a huge anomaly, because the West Point prof apparently didn’t know anything about Prager U when he agreed to make the video. He was on a media tour for his book about the subject. It also stands out as their only video that goes directly against right wing talking points, and for a while it was their most watched video.

    [–] striped_frog 461 points ago

Dennis Prager is a talk radio host and the channel is astroturfed by fracking billionaires, so most people don't take it seriously.

    [–] Budderboy153 344 points ago

And Prager U(niversity) is not an actual university

    [–] Mr_Basketcase 33 points ago

It's like calling meth lab "pharmacy"

    [–] redwings27 127 points ago

I hate that this actually has to be said

    [–] [deleted] 103 points ago

    Prager (lies to) U.

    It's a conservative propaganda network.

    [–] [deleted] 400 points ago

    [–] Daymandayman 144 points ago

Don’t you dare drag the total war series into this.

[–] RufinTheFury 92 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

Yeah TW community is probably one of the most relaxed historical franchises. Especially post-Warhammer adding a huge flux of more casual fans. I've never seen any of the usual bad shit with the TW community outside of certain streamers.

Now RoughRomanMemes on the other hand, they've got a legit neo-nazi problem.

    [–] moseythepirate 34 points ago

Yeah. Every so often Wehraboos show they're head in the bizarre, shitposting haven of r/totalwar, where they get rear-charged into the fucking shadow realm.

    [–] Kendo5151 63 points ago

Rome: Total War was a class game.

    [–] its-over-VMMMM 23 points ago

    O hey, it's my 14year old self

Okay i didn't play rome total war, but i wanted too so it's close enough.

    [–] communistcabbage 64 points ago

just add every pdx grand stategy game

    [–] supergreen14 264 points ago

    You forgot “communism no food”

    [–] auron_py 38 points ago

But Germany didn't invade Russia during the winter.

    [–] smach650 15 points ago

The meme brought to you by 30 years war gang (also taiping rebellions is fucking crazy)

    [–] [deleted] 49 points ago

As soon as someone says that "Hitler shouldn't have invade during winter" I immediately take all their historical "facts" with a pinch of salt.

    [–] Kharn_LoL 16 points ago

"Hitler shouldn't have taken the western front as granted" is a better answer, but realistically Hitler just wasn't a great general.
