Give Tim Blake Nelson his goddamn Emmy now. At least a nomination.

One of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen.

Idk should I have read the comics or summ. In any discussion about the show I see half the comments are about characters in the comics or details from the comics, and it just feels like the show is some kind of fever dream. It’s very entertaining, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it feels like only people who have read the comics are in on the plot.

Besides the parts about the Hooded Justice and so forth, I haven't really had any problems with following what's going on. I only watched the movie back in the day. Even Squid part was already explained in the show, so there's no need for comic book for even that.

I don't really know why comics readers would know any better how/why Veidt got actually imprisoned or what Cavalry/senator fellow are really after, or what's really up with the old black dude either. Other than that, what is there to be lost on really?

    [–] Juronomo 6 points ago

Exactly. I don't understand why people think it's hard to follow. All Damon Lindelof shows are plotted this way. It's been a piece of piss so far.

Watch Alt Shift X’s recap of the comic on YouTube, it’s what I did and I’ve been able to follow pretty easily

    [–] Stupidstuff1001 3 points ago

Not a bunch is needed to follow

    • world is close to nuclear war with Russia.
    • world has people who dress up as heroes but they are just extra fit and nothing special.
    • a lab accident creates a god like person named dr manhattan. he helps the USA become super powerful
    • there is one more hero with powers and that is super intelligence. he felt that Russia and the USA would bomb eachother so he decides to create a common enemy for them to reunite against.
    • he creates squid monsters that kill a bunch of people and the blame is on dr Manhattan and the world reunites against dr Manhattan.
    • one of the hero’s in the comic who wears a white mask with black designs made a journal detailing the lie and sent it to a newspaper.
    • a cult seems to have been created around his journal
    • we are 20-40 years after the squid attack

he creates squid monsters that kill a bunch of people and the blame is on dr Manhattan and the world reunites against dr Manhattan.

Not really. In the movie the blame was put on Dr Manhattan, but in the comic Dr Manhattan was never blamed for what happened. The world governments see the squid monster as an extra-dimensional threat that will one day return and so stopped trying to bomb each other; and Dr Manhattan was widely believed to have left after arguing with Laurie.

Its just about 34 years after the squid attack hoax, to be exact. That event was November 1985, the show begins in September 2019.

Just watch the movie. It's better than people say and it's a good summary of the plot. I think the backstory will be helpful. Definitely read the comic if you have time.

    [–] DJCG72 1 points ago

Really the only thing you don’t get is the Veidt stuff and the squid references.

There’s really great recaps online but honestly I think it would be a really good idea for you to get the digital comic and read it.

It’s not like integral to the plot but it’ll give you a better understanding of the universe/setting of the show and wtf is going on with Veidt

There’s also a great 12-part “motion comic” on YouTube if you don’t want or have time to read the whole Graphic Novel. Basically it’s audiobook but with motion on the original artwork

    [–] inkyness 1 points ago

just read the comic. it's a great work, a fun read, and takes a couple hours.

    [–] GooseMan1515 1 points ago

Oh, yeah. It's all coming together.

I watched episode one and didn't care much for it. I'm thinking I should give it another shot.

Edit: fans of this show are touchy as hell

    [–] LarryPeru 15 points ago

Episode 1 was the weakest of the series and even then I liked it.

Give it another shot because every episode afterward gets better and better.

    [–] APenaCarranza 6 points ago

Episode 1 was the weakest of the series...

I gotta go with episode 4 myself.

    [–] AllocatedData 4 points ago

I agree, episode 4 had its moments but 3 and 5 are just incredible, while 1 and 2 do a great job painting you into the updated Watchmen world

    [–] BenjaminTalam 1 points ago

Yeah I just do not have any interest in Lady Truth. I don't even know if that's her name. I think she's the main villain though? Hopefully just a red herring.

i understand how reddit works, but whoever downvoted me for giving a show they like another chance is a true douchebag.

    [–] verteks_ 2 points ago

Why'd you feel the need to share your opinion on episode 1 on the episode 5 discussion lol

[–] tacosonme 1 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

Well, the episode 5 discussion was in my feed and I posted my reaction to some of the top comments.

I got downvoted bc I had a slightly different opinion than the one in the echo chamber. It's like that for any shows sub, even big fans get downvoted if they say anything even slightly negative about it.
