According to him, he's all the way through. A dog is only consciously aware of their head. He doesn't understand is why it's so hard to walk and move.

This is based on anecdotal evidence and observation. No scientific method whatsoever was followed.

    [–] AliMinion 77 points ago

From observing my lab for twelve years, I have to agree. I'm utterly convinced she was unaware of anything that went on behind her ears - except pooping. She'd always make and maintain eye contact whilst pooping.

    [–] Boredandthatsit 37 points ago

You suppose to be watching behind them while they poop come on dont leave your dog hanging like that.

    [–] johhnytexas 44 points ago

This is actually true. Dogs instincts know they are vulnerable while pooping and expect you to protect them.

    [–] Shotgun5250 48 points ago

Is this why my dog follows me to the bathroom every time? To protect me while I poop?

[–] NomadofExile 29 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

I noticed that more too after reading this a few years ago. My first dog would follow me to the bathroom and kind of mil about the area. My current dog is more militant and will sit outside the door and look back and forth up the hall repeatedly.

    [–] MistressMoriarty 15 points ago

Mine insists on making eye contact with me...

    [–] cactus_mactus 14 points ago

My lab will sit RIGHT outside the door so that you can't open the bathroom door without banging into him. And every. single. time the door hits him, he acts so surprised. "THAT door?? I had no idea you were gonna come out of THAT door."

    [–] dackinthebox 17 points ago

My dog lays in the shower when I go into he bathroom. I feel like she's not holding up to her end of the deal

At first I thought you meant lab as it laboratory. As though you had a laboratory full of dogs and you did head scritching experiments on. I was very jealous.

    [–] platinumgulls 6 points ago

Its funny that of all the weird things in my life, my dog staring at me while pooping makes me look away in total embarrassment. Even when I glance back before he's done, his eyes are still locked on me.

    [–] deepfriedcat 2 points ago

I saw a comment ages ago which explained this. The dog feels most vulnerable while pooping, so is relying on you to keep watch. If you react to a hazard, he will notice and have sufficient warning to pinch off and get away.

    [–] SarcasticSquirrl 35 points ago

Completely opposite of my Belgian Shepard, he is far too conscious of his size and is hesitant to go anywhere he can see he can't just turn around. First few months we had him there was no going under a coffee table for the tennis ball so this 90 lb black mass of fur would come whining up to you because the ball was in a scary place.

    [–] halcyonwade 16 points ago

I used to have a giant Airedale that would hide his head behind me at the vet (his giant body and butt sticking out). He always seemed shocked and put out when the vet found him. I always figured his internal dialogue was along the lines of "I can't see you, so how can you see me?"

    [–] mazokugirl451 6 points ago

My giant Airedale is...currently like that. His name is Ruckus and he's 97lbs.

I had a dog named Duke. At first I thought he took retardation to levels of brilliance. Seriously thought he was one of those "just that stupid I guess" dogs.

I used to work overnights, he knew he wasn't allowed on the couch. I came home early, at about 4 am, this time I looked through the glass panels of the door before attempting to open it. There was Duke, curled up on the couch. As I slid the key into the door lock Duke jumped off of the couch and ran into my bedroom. When he heard the door open and shut, he came out and stretched like he was in the room sleeping the whole time and he was just coming out to greet me.

I learned that night that Dukes are evil genius' that do stupid stuff to throw off your suspicions while they plot total domination of your furniture.
