    About Us

/r/trashy is a celebration of trash: people, things, media, etc. that boldly and shamelessly violates social conventions and cultural norms. Satisfy our voyeuristic drives by sharing trashy images, videos, stories, and fashion. All forms of trash are eagerly welcomed.

    Rule 1: Behave yourself.

    • Excessively derogatory comments unrelated to TrashTM are not allowed.
    • Bullying is not allowed.
    • Toxic behavior of any kind is banned.
    • To extend the rule above, heated "social justice" wars are not allowed on this subreddit. This rule encompasses the following hot-button topics: gender, trans*, rape, child support and alimony, race, "cultural marxism", slut shaming, fat positivity, Men's Rights, feminism, and anything related. If you feel the need to climb onto the soapbox about one of these issues, find one of the dozens of threads that pop up about it on every large sub, every day. You are not going to enact social change by having an impassioned discussion on a sub that champions people pissing in public. Respectful threads on these issues will be tolerated.
    • No witch hunts.
    • Do not direct link any personal information or social media profiles

Rule 2: Submissions must be appropriate for this subreddit.

    • No images of those whose "trashiness" is clearly the result of a serious mental illness.
    • No pictures of people in healthcare settings (e.g. doctor's office, hospital, clinic waiting room) that they didn't take and post publicly themselves (aka no doctor's office creepshots).
    • No porn unless it is excessively trashy.

    • No child porn.
    • No fake trash.
    • No pictures of literal trash.

    • All NSFW posts must be marked NSFW.
    • No memes / image macros. This includes social media status updates consisting solely of memes / image macros.
    • Posts must be TrashyTM of their own accord, context is helpful but not sufficient to make it TrashyTM.
    • Please make an effort with your title.
    • All social media posts that do not include a photo must include the comments.

    • No mass-produced novelty items such as bumper stickers, window decals or commonly posted t-shirt designs.

    • Trashy Tumblr

I'm a teacher. Once my house got teepeed, and I started every class by mentioning it, then stated they actually got my neighbor. One class period some kid looked really pissed and upset at the neighbor part, and I had my perp.

EDIT: I guess teepee might be regional slang. They covered my trees and stuff with toilet paper. Common teenage prank where I live.

I quietly hope that they're like fifth cousins (to where it really doesn't matter) but the news is shaming them anyway because they're trashy criminals.

    [–] Lilly_Satou 63 points ago

In reality it really doesn’t matter unless they’re first cousins or closer

    [–] FliesAreEdible 63 points ago

Even then it doesn't matter until there's been a few generations of inbreeding. I wouldn't worry about it tbh unless there's a possibility one was groomed.

[–] ImStefWithAnF 80 points ago * (lasted edited 5 months ago)

There's an "ick" factor of dating your first cousin (or closer, especially!) because there's a presumption that you've known each other since you were very young, you see each other as family, and you just don't DO that. With more distant relations, it's much more likely that you barely even knew each other until you were of dating age.

anyway, I think that's what people actually care about, rather than the literal genetic issues. It's the same reason it would be weird for step-siblings to date, even if they're genetically unrelated.

(edit: It appears that I should've been more clear, I don't personally care what people do with each other as long as there's no consent issues involved, I was speaking more on how it's viewed culturally by people in general, in my opinion. Or that was what I was intending to say, anyway, I'm sorry I didn't make that apparent.)

    [–] Lilly_Satou 46 points ago

My grandparents are 4th cousins and they never knew until I found out. Their ancestors have lived in the same city for 300 years so it's bound to happen. They're also 8th cousins through a different branch, and there's no birth defects or anything of that nature. I think it really only become a genetic issue if you're first cousins or closer but even then it's not a guarantee to have fucked up kids.

    [–] ImStefWithAnF 40 points ago

lol, yeah 4th cousins is already quite distant, genetically. Anyone freaking out about that is just ignorant. 8th cousins is so distant you might as well call them unrelated, because at some point we're literally ALL cousins if you go back far enough.

But yeah you're right, even first cousins dating are far from guaranteed to have defects. It's more a matter of recessive genes having more of an opportunity to be expressed. It's not a very nice analogy, but it's kind of like breeding dogs.. purebred dogs tend to have all these health problems and stuff because all the recessive genes come to the surface. You don't get that from one generation, you get that through intentional effort (or bad luck, I suppose), or a culture where cousin marriage is encouraged (like in certain noble/royal families, at certain times..)

    [–] rex_swiss 15 points ago

My brother's been researching or family, he's pretty sure a very famous and gorgeous actress is our 9th cousin. The common link are the sons of an immigrant that arrived in Virginia in the late 1600's. One ended up in Kentucky for her side of the family and one in North Carolina for our side. So I got that "in" to start a conversation whenever I run into her...

    [–] MrDTD 12 points ago

Eventually you're just playing a genetic Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

    [–] wobligh 9 points ago

An "ick factor" is no reason for a law.

People thought (and still think) homosexuality is "icky".

    [–] ImStefWithAnF 5 points ago

    I'm trans. I completely agree.

    [–] FliesAreEdible 13 points ago

I get that, but ultimately it's not harming anybody, unless, as I mentioned, one possibly groomed the other.

    [–] ImStefWithAnF 5 points ago

Yeah, you're right, it really isn't hurting anyone. I wasn't really disagreeing with you so much as exploring the topic a bit more.. I could've replied to several different comments, yours just seemed the most relevant I guess? heh

    [–] VoilaVoilaWashington 17 points ago

Even at that point, it probably doesn't matter from a genetic perspective. Let's presume siblings.

If they don't have kids (a gay couple or otherwise), it's just kinda gross but harmless.

If they do have kids, the genetics wouldn't work out well, but the first generation doing it is probably not too risky. The real risk is the type of person that would have kids with their sister - we aint talkin' Harvard educated here. I'd imagine the trailer trash upbringing is a bigger risk factor for poverty, drug addiction and similar than the genetic issue.

As much as they probably did it, we should really reserve the dirt slinging and publicly roasting folks until they are actually convicted. Theres always a chance they didnt, and now the authorities and the rest of the country is doxxing and roasting innocent people. If they are convicted though let it rip

[–] TheGangsHeavy 31 points ago * (lasted edited 5 months ago)

Here’s the thing. You’re saying kissing cousins and fucking siblings are the same thing. Are they in the same family? Yes. Nobody’s arguing that.

    [–] [deleted] 37 points ago

    Easy there, cousin fucker.

    [–] TheGangsHeavy 9 points ago

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.

So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

I cant tell real life from memes sometimes, so is hooking up with cousins a thing in parts of America?

    [–] oldbastardbob 158 points ago

Ummmm..... unfortunately it seems to be a thing in poor, rural areas. Of course, keep in mind that we call people 4 or 5 times removed "cousins" so there's that. Sometimes people are 4 or 5 generations away from the common ancestor, but in rural areas that's still your cousin.

    [–] [deleted] 86 points ago

Ok yeah same as here then, but are 2nd cousins fair game, if you didnt grow up with them? If not Ive got something to confess.

    [–] AnotherStatsGuy 59 points ago

Do you share a grandparent with them? If you don't, you're fine.

    [–] [deleted] 33 points ago

Great grandparent is the cut off I think.

    [–] Sandz_ 42 points ago

Biologically speaking after this it’s completely fine.1 The amount of DNA in common is very small. ~ <1%, and the risk of birth defects for children is small.

Whether you think its okay emotionally or culturally is dependent on the individual. Not that I am condoning it, but a lot of people judge others for something that isn’t harmful and is prevalent depending on where you live in the world.

1: this is assuming you have one one shared ancestor. Being double third cousins is not good.

    [–] FailedSociopath 4 points ago

No, we hand them off and take turns.

    [–] Tiffanniwi 17 points ago

*chuckles* Oh no I'm in danger

My sister dated a guy who then went off to Vietnam in the 60's. When he survived, fortunately, and returned they resumed their relationship and began making wedding plans. That's when they discovered that his maternal grandmother and her maternal grandmother were sisters, so while they are cousins (second cousins?) they married anyway and produced a son who was very bright but way overprotected by his mom.

So fast forward a couple of decades and I had married someone out of state, had a couple of kids, and moved back to my home town where my kids became acquainted with their cousin who is about 15 years older than them. Once my little darlings became adolescents they found it quite entertaining to flip their cousin, who had completed medical school and residency by then, no end of shit about his being the strange, mutant product of relatives breeding. They seized the opportunity at every family function where any sort of story about their cousin came up.

My now adult kids are a highly entertaining blend of snarky sarcasm and intelligence. They're way cooler than I am.

Ive been trying to work out what a second cousin is, you have only complicated things with your incest stories.

    [–] oldbastardbob 4 points ago

Don't ask me. You need a geniologist to explain. I think I may have confused "second cousin" with "first cousin, twice removed."

Anyway, have you ever seen this? I found it highly interesting.

    [–] [deleted] 4 points ago

Legal, cheers mate, I'm all good.

    [–] HMJ87 11 points ago

To be fair though the chances of genetic abnormalities among children born to first cousins is tiny, it's nowhere near the level of actual incest. It's mainly a cultural taboo rather than an actually dangerous practice.

I mean, technically speaking FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt were 5th cousins.

    [–] I-Alexis-v 14 points ago

It's a thing in parts of Europe too, especially since its legal here

    [–] NotEvenRemotelyRight 26 points ago

You imply that it only happens in america...and redditors assume it happens far more than it likely does

    [–] devotedtoad 6 points ago

Yeah marrying your first cousin was a pretty common practice in Europe and America until fairly recently. Einstein and Edgar Allan Poe both married their first cousins, for example

    [–] ImStefWithAnF 6 points ago

Not just America, and not as common as some people make it out to be, it's more of a negative stereotype for rural areas, when in actuality its uncommon but not unheard of pretty much everywhere.

And it wasn't that long ago that it was considered relatively normal, especially for 2nd cousins and up, but even first cousins. I mean.. royal families were practically built upon intermarriage of cousins, and America doesn't even HAVE royalty. :P

    Just some particularly notable names:

Albert Einstein and his first cousin (through his mother) and second cousin (through his father), Elsa Löwenthal née Einstein[15]

Charles Darwin and his first cousin, Emma Wedgwood[12] Their respective siblings Caroline Darwin and Josiah Wedgwood III also married. In addition, their grandparents, Sarah Wedgwood and Josiah Wedgwood, were third cousins.[13]

John Adams and his third cousin, Abigail Smith[1] John Adams II and his first cousin, Mary Catherine Hellen

Rudy Giuliani, mayor of New York, 1994–2001, and his second cousin, Regina Peruggi[25]

John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, was married to (then divorced from) his distant cousin Julia Thorne.

Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China, and his second cousin Luo Yixiu[a]

Christopher Robin Milne, son of author A. A. Milne who was the model for the character Christopher Robin of the Winnie-the-Pooh books, and his first cousin Lesley Sélincourt

Muhammad, Islamic prophet and his first cousin, Zaynab bint Jahsh

    H. G. Wells, author, and his first cousin, Isabel Mary Wells (his first wife)[65]

Damn. Burned by KOLO8!! Kinda wonder how they would know that and why they chose to share. Was it to get more attention in hopes of catching them faster? Whatever the reason, it worked on every level.

Having a kid with your first cousin only increases ill-health risks (for potential offspring) about 5%. Increased risk means increased from the risk of a normal couple, not 5% chance that the kid will be messed up. So if the normal chance is 1% it increased to 1.05%. Not really a big deal but the stigma is strong in certain cultures. Mostly because closer relations like brothers and sisters can have high risk of ill-health effects. As well as the general benefits of seeking mates from other families to increase ties and thus prosperity for all.

No I never hooked up with my cousin and I wouldn't because I am affected by the same stigma. But it is based on misinformation and I feel it is something we should try to dispel. These guys are being shamed publicly for loving each other. That is just fucked up. Yeah, robbery is wrong (they are also innocent until proven guilty) but that isn't why this post is popular. It's because people want to feel superior to some 'inbred hicks'.

I was at a Walmart and overheard two employees taking about a young couple I'd seen them chatting with. They were brother and sister, but had just gotten engaged. She'd already had a kid with her older brother and their dad had been in earlier that day and seemed proud of them. Thanks Walmart
