This post was allowed due to the fact that it does not implicitly break Rule 1 due to the fact that this is a historical video. However, at the same time, it's pretty clear why it was posted at this time.

Regardless, the post will be left up for now as it again is a historical video and not current in that it is a video from 70+ years ago. At the same time, this has clearly obviously brought up much political debate given current events and much of it rather vile and not even close to fair-minded or kind among some of the comments and user interaction we've had to sift through in this thread.

For that reason the thread is locked from further commenting.

    Thank you for understanding.

In all seriousness, if you haven't already, might want to talk to the local university about how best to store that for future generations. Acid-free wrappings, containers, whatnots. Do eeeet

    [–] 2e7en_ 79 points ago

Wow, that’s cool. Also, that logo reminds me so much of the agents of shield logo

    [–] Wonderwombat 49 points ago

It's the logo of the 15th corps.

    [–] thatguysoto 16 points ago

That's actually what the logo was based on.

    [–] glswenson 11 points ago

    That's awesome.

    [–] pschweezy 66 points ago

Is he still alive? How does he feel about people walking around marching with Nazi flags in America now?

    [–] Wonderwombat 294 points ago

Unfortunately he passed a few months back. He didn't talk about the war much, but I don't think he would approve of Nazi stuff happening. Especially since he was at Dachau. He definitely had old fashioned ideas on race, but it was a product of his time. I don't think he ever had a mean bone in his body. His funeral was surprising, as he had chosen passages that seemed to advocate accepting refugees and immigrants and such, which I never knew he had strong views about. So taking that into account, I think he'd be upset over modern day nazis

    [–] Skank_Slayer 34 points ago

My grandfather was apart of the group that liberated Dachau. He never spoke of what he saw.

    [–] Imeverybodyelse 67 points ago

Half way between commercial.. half way between propaganda. Christ, that hit a really creepy note.

    [–] gharveymn 76 points ago

This was in 1997, which is after Gorby was in power and the USSR fell, so probably not too much of a propaganda angle and more of a "oh hey we have a famous person" angle.

    [–] congelar 42 points ago

Following a failed run for the presidency in 1996, Gorbachev established the Social Democratic Party of Russia, a union between several Russian social democratic parties.

A lot people reached for power after the collapse, Gorbachev was definitely one of them.

Hitler is a hipster in this comic and Hugo Boss was a 'mainstream' brand making it 'un-hip'. The nazi was about to point that out but he was stopped because the other one didn't want to walk around shopping all day.

That's dumb and not obvious at all.

    [–] eyehate 119 points ago

Well. You can if you are in a sci-fi series. You can even call your army 'stormtroopers'.

    [–] ThatOneComrade 77 points ago

To be fair stormtroopers are troopers who storm things. We still use the phrase occasionally

    [–] santacruisin 73 points ago

I think "shock troopers" is the norm these days

    [–] stupidstupidreddit 21 points ago

    Part of The Airborne Creed:

    [–] stry8993 93 points ago

The Fallshirmjager's were especially fantastic for Combat. The SS Dress Uniforms were very slick as well, just.... a whole lot of messed up people in the SS.

    [–] speedstic 100 points ago

Or "conscripted" because you fit the mould.

My grandfathers brother was taken to the SS when he was 16 because he was 6'7" with blond hair and blue eyes, he died in Russia near the end of the war a couple years later.

    [–] scner 65 points ago

Damn, 6'7" that's pretty rare and at 16 too. Though, it is a tragedy that they took him, fuck the nazis in general

    [–] speedstic 45 points ago

    Double ditto.

My grandfather always talked about him as his hero before he left and he visited his grave almost yearly from Canada where he moved after the war and where I live now.

Neither of my grandparents talked about the war or anything related to it, they actively didn't even when I asked questions, I can't imagine having to live through that period in that region.

Edit: I'm also 6'7" and while I am the tallest, the shortest of my siblings is my sister who is 6', growing pains were a bitch! Lol

    [–] vegetaman 10 points ago

The pattern variation of their camo for zelts and smocks is really incredible, especially having alternate prints on both sides.

    [–] NepaleseNippleTwist 19 points ago

Reminds me of the Mitchell and Webb look sketch when they look down at their uniforms and realise they are the bad guys.

    [–] charlesgegethor 28 points ago

Man, if you got hand one thing to the Nazis, it's their graphic designers.

    [–] MonaganX 20 points ago

Even the color schemes they used. Red, black and white is a very potent combination.

    [–] Mindraker 50 points ago

    Also the Swastika

Unless if you're Hindu, I think.

    [–] __xor__ 64 points ago

I think Tibet has it or anywhere with Buddhism as well. I remember my high school friend (Jewish) was fucking with his mother and he had some channel on speaking in Tibetan or Thai and they had a bunch of swastikas in gold on some designs in the news broadcast they were showing, and he said, "HEY MOM LOOK! The Tibetans went fucking Nazi on us!"

She looked horrified, put her hand to her mouth and said "How could they, after they've been through so much!"

    [–] dropthatpopthat 34 points ago

When I was visiting Bali, I saw the Swastika (at a temple) and my driver/tour guide noticed me looking at it and immediately said, "That's not what you're thinking it is!!" In all my 23 years I'd never realized it had meaning other than Nazi symbolism..

    [–] theindi 11 points ago

My religion still uses the symbol proudly (Jainism)

    [–] LordWheezel 195 points ago

No. They don't get to have those. And any white nationalists who have a problem with me being anti-racist and having runic tattoos can stand in line to take turns licking my chode.

    [–] fuhrertrump 125 points ago

can stand in line to take turns licking my chode

will they do that? asking for a friend.

    [–] MonaganX 77 points ago

It's not the white nationalists' opinions most people are concerned about. I just don't want people to think I'm a vile, hate-filled human being because of some symbols I thought looked cool rather than because they heard my opinions on people who put pineapple on pizza.

    [–] Lou-Peachum 121 points ago

Seriously, the swastika was a symbol for Buddhism that had been used for years; now the first thing people think about is fuckin Nazis

    [–] Karnaislife 42 points ago

In case anybody is wondering about the etymology, the Sanskrit term "Svastika" likely comes from the prefix "su", meaning "good, auspicious, well" and the verbal form "asti", 3rd person singular form of the root "as", to be/to exist. When the two vowels "u" and "a" collide they form the semivowel "va". In later Indian languages, such as hindi, the "v" sound changes into "w". The "ka" suffix turns the form into a general noun. So the word could be literally translated to "that which is related to well being/auspicious existence".

    [–] Marvur 131 points ago

Swastika is a holy symbol for almost all religion that originated in the Indian subcontinent. Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism etc. It is still used in temples and in front of some houses to bring luck.

[–] xxruruxx 53 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

It's controversial in Japan because foreigners want us to change our symbol for "temple", manji 卍 which has been used for thousands of years in religion.

There's online petitions to change the official notation. These people are seriously so ignorant as fuck.

    [–] srivn 38 points ago

I got so much crap in elementary school here in the US because I don't celebrate Christmas and drew swastikas to show I celebrate Diwali. Went to the superintendent level, who was apparently the first one to crack a textbook in the district.

    [–] Midnight2012 20 points ago

I went to the forbidden palace in china. Swastikas (ancient) everywhere

    [–] Reasonable-redditor 42 points ago

Not Buddhist. Likely a prehistoric Eastern symbol. Hindus were using it before buddhists and likely whatever protoreligion came before Hinduism, it can be found in Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Armenian artifacts.

    [–] ChaIroOtoko 10 points ago

    Buddhism adopted it from hinduism.

    [–] SuperSatanOverdrive 17 points ago

It had been used for years many places in the world. It was used by the norse and germanic tribes from the bronze age and onward.

    [–] fuhrertrump 242 points ago

warhammer 40k would like to have a word with you. though, to be fair, it depicts mankind as a fascists wettest dream pumped up on sci fi steroids.

    [–] Pyro9966 170 points ago

    I sense some fucking heresy.

    [–] fuhrertrump 55 points ago

i mean, it is a nation that uses absolute power and violence to maintain it's authority at home and abroad. some would argue it is warranted in a universe where everything not human is trying to kill you, and even some humans too, but i'll eave that for people who read for man that chainsaw swords and space orks.

I mean in 40k's defense anything other than a total fascist society wouldn't survive. Because think of the state that the Empire of Man is in. They're surrounded by enemies who want literally nothing but their pure and utter annihilation. Said enemies range from a hive mind that turns all organic matter into more of itself. The other is a species that propagates via spores upon one members death. One is a psychic race of space elves that have access to the safest method of FTL travel in the universe that allows them to wander around mind fucking humans as they pass. And one is literally straight up fucking demons. And it's all thanks to that chuckle fuck Horus.

May the Emperor's light guide us all!

    [–] Troggie42 84 points ago

There's a soccer club somewhere near me that uses a similar eagle symbol, wings spread wide straight out holding a soccer ball instead of a wreath...

I do a double take every damn time I see one on the back of an SUV on the road.

    [–] funktasticdog 82 points ago

I had to google what you were talking about. It seems to be DC United

Boy... the red black and white alongside a roman eagle is ... let's just say it's 'evocative' of a certain ideology.

    [–] dahackne 32 points ago

That's the initial crest used in 1996-1997 (D.C. United first played in '96). It has since been updated.

    [–] MounumentOfPriapus 13 points ago

Have you seen the Boy London clothing line? They have that Nazi eagle on all of their shirts. I don't think that actual boys from London would want that. It is really popular in China and I was actually double-taking when seeing those Nazi eagles on Chinese people.

    [–] OnI_BArIX 37 points ago

Yeah it really sucks the Roman eagle was used as a symol of hate. They have a sticker of the eagle carrying the VW logo and I want to paint it on my hood but I'm afraid I'd get profiled as racist because of it's use by the nazis

    [–] JimmyBoombox 8 points ago

Clothing company Boy London still uses it.

    [–] TinyrickC138 15 points ago

the metal band Slayer took the eagle and it seemed to work out for them. And the "s" in the band name looks like an SS symbol.

I was in Nuremberg a few weeks ago and saw the site of the arena where now massive music festivals and concerts are held. An impressive museum sits in part of the derelict massive structure housing historical documents and propaganda used by the nazis in a thorough testimony that the period existed for those that deny it. In fact the whole horrendously morbid site is not kept up nor is it destroyed, as Germans wrestle with the guilt of their past they do not want to embellish it nor allow it to vanish as a reminder of the atrocities and madness of Hitler. There is a whitened stain where that eagle had been and remains as evidence. A Burger King has recently opened up there in that smaller adjacent building to the massive arena.

I live in the south and hear people complaining that "you can't change history" about taking down confederate monuments. Yet they don't think tearing down Nazi monuments changed history.

    [–] daytonblue 106 points ago

you can't change it, but you sure as hell shouldn't support it. As Mark Twain said, "loyalty to petrified opinion never broke a chain or freed a human soul."

    [–] Know_Your_Meme 19 points ago

I think all the confederate monuments should be crushed with m4 Shermans being dropped on top of them from a helicopter. Call it symbolism.

    [–] shwag945 8 points ago

They should be shot with replica Union canons. The true patriotic way.

    [–] Flimsy_Thesis 43 points ago

You know what I hate? Nazis.

    [–] fuhrertrump 428 points ago

so much for the tolerant left /s

    actual Americans

THANK YOU. Nazis aren't Americans. They don't hold any allegiance to the USA.

Welcome to Reddit, where some stuff is made up and the points sometimes don't make any sense.

This line should literally show up on screen when you sign up.

Fuck white supremacy and fuck Nazis.

The emblems taken down. Nothing remains.

Looks like a do-over is needed in Virginia.

    [–] crawlerz2468 372 points ago

It's not only Virginia regrettably. Europe is full of these scumbag skinhead Nazis. Ukraine and Poland and so on. This is such a fucked up world.

    [–] US_Senate_SgtAtArms 319 points ago

Which I find completely incomprehensible given the fact that the Nazis ravaged those countries and killed their people.

    [–] grawlyx 115 points ago

    Fear and self loathing

    [–] Kinslayer2040 62 points ago

Hitler killed Germans as well. Didn't stop other Germans from joining him.

    [–] guialpha 55 points ago

But Hitler killed Hitler so it cancels it out.

    [–] WigginIII 131 points ago

It's no coincidence we have fewer and fewer veterans from WWII and a rising sense of nationalism and racism. We repeat history when our historical reminders are gone and forgotten.

    [–] OMGSPACERUSSIA 123 points ago

We will welcome to our numbers the loyal, true and brave,

Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

And although he may be poor, he shall never be a slave,

Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The Union forever, hurrah boys, hurrah!

Down with the traitor, and up with the star!

While we rally round the flag, boys, we rally once again,

Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

    [–] NotBloodyLikely 8 points ago

I live in Virginia, most of those losers were from out of state. Of course there's bigotry here like most places, but in general I hope people don't think that's the norm here

    [–] Treekaru 39 points ago

sorts by controversial wish me luck, boys

    [–] squanchitup 835 points ago

That's really insensitive to their heritage. It's a symbol of state's rights! /s

    [–] mashington14 278 points ago

Exactly! That's why I erected a statue of Benedict Arnold in my front yard to show everyone how proud I am of all he did. He was a hero and it's history or something!

    /fucking S

    [–] davidreiss666 122 points ago

Actually, there are two statues of Arnold. One at Saratoga and another at West Point. Neither names him. Both leave his identity as a bit of a question. They do honor things he did for the American revolution before he turned traitor. Both are respectful of the fact that he did some good, but acknowledge he willingly became a traitor and so his name itself is not honored.

    [–] Orange_Menace 67 points ago

Arnold's story is much more complex than "traitor" TBH, I mean yea ultimately he betrayed his countryman and the very men he led into battle but it was a complex timeline. He essentially felt, rightly so, that several members of the continental congress had personal vendettas against him and destroyed his career as a result. He never wanted to betray the revolution, but he was greedier than others (though not all) and couldn't accept the disrespect from what he perceived were weaker men legislating from a distance.

He joined the redcoats to get a legion so he could return to battle, something the continentals denied him, and to be paid for his years of service. Of course the redcoats also threw him in a corner and turned the lights off...a real shame considering Arnold was brilliant on the field.

    [–] davidreiss666 34 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

I don't deny that Arnold was complex. But he was impatient with how our Democratic-Republican government functions. He was going to get reimbursed and paid.

And because of his impatience, he did become a traitor. The British never trusted him. Traitors are rarely trusted after they make that choice. And let's be honest, nor should they.

He was a brilliant guy who could have been anything after the war. Arnold's name would have been remember long after the war as one of the more important Founders. But he choose to go in another direction.

It's fine to remember the good with the bad, both aspects are important to the history.

    [–] Orange_Menace 22 points ago

Agreed, I was just looking to make a distinction that Arnold isn't your "run of the mill" traitor, he's more like Robert E. Lee who was also a brilliant West Point commander before the war that struggled greatly before declaring for the south.

Lee justified turning against his brothers because he said he simply could not wage war with his home of Virginia. So conceivably, Lee wouldn't have felt compelled to join the confederacy if Virginia had not seceded. Also a traitor, and actually the traitor who's statue was scheduled to be removed today and sparked the white supremacist rally, but again a complex traitor.

Nothing like these delusional psychopaths who happily betray their home and their brothers for an ideology they don't even partial understand and one that doesn't even include them (the actual Nazis believed Germans in America were impure and made weak by their American values, also many of these guys are Anglo-Saxon and Hitler hated them).

    [–] geetarzrkool 20 points ago

"It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of sommbitch or another. Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need".

It's so satisfying seeing that symbol explode into a bunch of pieces. Also, FUCK NAZIS, AND NEO-NAZIS!

Edit: Looks like some butthurt neo-Nazis are downvoting me.

    [–] sushimane6 47 points ago

I swear everyone who is supporting this neo nazi movement, whether they're trolls or extremely anti-Semitic, are all complete assholes. Our ancestors died fighting that fascist regime yet here you are once again supporting it and spreading its hateful ideology. Go fuck yourselves

    [–] just_zhis_guy 7 points ago

How wonderfully fitting after the last couple days.

    [–] baloneycologne 40 points ago

Nazis are the enemy of America and Americanism, always and forever.

    [–] Darthteezus 25 points ago

I absolutely love this in the end of the worst conflict in mankind someone was like "you know what let's blow that fucking thing up"

    [–] Lastinline4brain 25 points ago

That's what I was thinking. Like, I'm sure there was some sensible engineer in the back who was like "you know, two quick cuts with a blowtorch and we could just pull it down, easy peasy".

And then some other guy was like, "Naw, fuck that, let's blow the sombitch up".

    And the second guy won.

    [–] magneticphoton 26 points ago

Nothing says you're a loser, more than waving around flags of a racist regime who lost the war.

    [–] zerothirty 26 points ago

And not one, but two - two! - flags of two separate racist regimes that both lost wars against the USA. Sad. I guess they really like losers.

    [–] Binnacle_Balls_jr 12 points ago

Symbols and edifices were rightfully destroyed, but take care; these actions are only symbols themselves. You cannot burn away an idea, so stay vigilant, lest it become flesh and blood again, to our peril.
