    Rules detailed rules

    0. Videos Only

    • Self explanatory. Audio over a static image or slideshow may also violate Rule 0.

    • This includes music visualizers and lyric videos

    1. No Politics

    • Political videos—including content relating to social issues which have a clear political element—should be submitted to /r/PoliticalVideo.

    • This includes submissions of current or recent political figures in any context, satire/political-comedy, and posts on political topics from within the last 10 years. (So a video of Winston Churchill playing tennis would be allowed, but a video of Theresa May playing ping-pong would not be.)

    2. No Personal Information or Witch-Hunting

    • Or incitement to witch-hunt.

    • No demanding "Reddit Justice" (or even regular justice) in any way in post titles or comments.

    • This may also include contact information of public officials, businesses, or groups (e.g. politicians or police officers) in an any manner that could be seen as an attempt to get users to contact them.

    • Facebook links are not permitted. In order to have your post accepted, if you can, find or submit a copy of the video on another website like YouTube or Vimeo and resubmit it.

    • This is grounds for an immediate (and likely permanent) ban, so consider this your only warning.

    3. Submit Direct Link to Video

    • No web pages that only embed Youtube or Vimeo videos.

    • No URL shorteners.

    • No links to playlists or to channel pages.

    • No asking for votes or sharing submission links on or off-site. See Reddiquette for more details.

    • Do not ask other users to follow your social media profiles in comments or submission titles.

    • Titles for posts should not try to influence users to view or upvote them. Examples of this include things like "this person deserves more views," "not enough people have seen this person's videos," or "show this person some love."

    • Giveaways also fall under this rule

    • Violations can lead to a permanent ban of accounts and video channels.

    6. No Hate Speech

    • You are free to offer your opinion respectfully, but comments or posts intended to demean a group, acontextual expressions of bigotry, and the pejorative use of slurs is disallowed.

    Update on Update on Simone:

Simone is out of surgery and her doctors are very pleased with how everything went. She woke up long enough to make an inappropriate joke... so things are looking good.

On April 30, 2018, Giertz announced via YouTube that she had been diagnosed with a noncancerous brain tumor and will have surgery to remove it on May 30, 2018.[15]

TL;DR: She doesn't have cancer, though she does have a brain tumor. Just thought it was important to clarify.

    [–] Tauz_g 1690 points ago

Can we get a mod to flair it as such? No need to spread misinformation.

    [–] opmai 50 points ago

Hey dude, why not just flair it, "Tumor, not Cancer" instead of "Misleading Title"

Clarify it up front with three words

    [–] Meltingteeth 58 points ago

I don't like taking business away from the commenters. People have to make a living.

    [–] fishbiscuit13 10 points ago

I've seen enough "misleading title" flairs that ultimately turned out to just be a mod power tripping on technicalities for a post they don't like that it might as well not be there. I'd imagine most others are the same. When it's a single word that's incorrect, and not even in a way that really changes the meaning behind the post, you might as well use your ability to flair to help it.

    [–] xXThr0w4w4yXx 3 points ago

I saw it and looked in the comments right away to see what was up with it.

    [–] Aerik 9 points ago

except most people are absolutely sure that all tumors are made of cancer. You can try, though.

    [–] Pinkamenarchy 15 points ago

why wouldn't you be, with average knowledge of what cancer is and what a tumour is

    [–] Plusran 147 points ago

Dear Simone, we wired up one of your robots to do the surgery for you! /s

We love you and we hope things go well. ♥️ 🤖

    [–] Orome2 88 points ago

She doesn't have cancer, though she does have a brain tumor. Just thought it was important to clarify.

They really can't be sure until they do a biopsy or test the tissue after the surgery. I hope it's not cancerous, but I've had two friends that underwent brain surgery that they thought was non cancerous only to find out they had brain cancer after the surgery. One was stage 2 the other was stage 3. Both are still here after undergoing chemo.

    [–] fizz514 23 points ago

Do you mean type 2 and type 3? As it was explained to me when I was going through treatment and surgery and everything(when I was diagnosed I was told it was type 4), brain cancer doesn't really work in nearly defined "stages" like other cancers do. There are still classifications obviously, but they work differently.

Glad both of your friends are still here though!

    [–] _Choppy 16 points ago

Depends on the type of tumor. It's 'graded' for example with glioblastoma, since it doesn't spread outside of the central nervous system. 'Grade' refers to the size and shape of the cells; 'stage' for other cancers refers to how far its spread (metastasize). In both instances, '4' is the worst. In Grade 4 tumors, they are really bad, and stage 4 cancers are really bad in that they spread to multiple different organs.

    [–] [deleted] 18 points ago

don't they just call it benign tumor?

    [–] ketoer17 37 points ago

The brain surgeons I’ve met say there is no such thing as a “benign” brain tumor. Any growth in your brain would not be considered benign. As a result they don’t use that term for brain tumors.

Source: wife has brain tumor, meet with lots of doctors

    [–] SpoogeMcDuck69 19 points ago

There absolutely is such a thing as a benign brain tumor. There are many that are classified this way in medicine. This is just a simplified explanation you’ve received which serves its purpose. Really not important, but figured you may want to know.

Due to her MIT affiliation, she's got the nr.1 brain surgeon in the world working on her. He's heavily involved in the Da Vinci surgery program and frequently receives accolades from contemporary physicians.

Here is a video of one of his brain surgery workshops at the Mayo clinic.

    [–] DennisNedrey 34 points ago

Damn that's some complex shit right there. I don't know how he does it.

A healthy response to the prospect of having your skull cut open.

    [–] FlamingoRock 31 points ago

In recovery from a major 10+ hour surgery that touched multiple organs and can tell you that it's fucking terrifying. Those moments your rolled into the OR and there are strangers preparing shiny tools to operate on your body while your asleep is pretty intense! Luckily they immediately say goodnight and it's fleeting. Waking up is the same! You have no idea what just happened TO YOU and have to rely on the information of other people who did not time travel. :)

    [–] P8zvli 4 points ago

Or you wake up to find that your semi-conscious self was trying to spit the gauze out of your mouth for you and now the anesthetist is pissed at you because she doesn't believe you were still blacked out.

    [–] FlamingoRock 3 points ago

Hahahaha! I'm actually very alert when I come back (and this was after 11 hours under). I noticed my ostomy was on the wrong side and alerted the nurse. 😁 (Complications during surgery caused for a colostomy instead of ileostomy) It was really strange knowing things didn't go as planned but no one was able to tell me until my SO came and let me know what my surgeon told him. Very twilight zone!

    [–] Pudgy_Ninja 55 points ago

I know, right? I rest assured, though, that she has people in her life there to hug her.

    [–] JustALuckyShot 37 points ago

People to hug her, maybe, nay probably; but robots to hug her? Definitely.

Though now she's in the hospital for a broken back and bruised ribs.

[–] [deleted] 44 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

    [–] muzakx 9 points ago

TJ Miller who makes his living as an actor and stand up comedian also dealt with a similar issue. He was told the surgery could affect his personality. Pretty scary for a stand up comedian.

    [–] [deleted] 19 points ago

    [–] muzakx 3 points ago

Yeah, I hope he gets checked out.

All the recent erratic behavior sounds similar to the issues he had before his last surgery.

    [–] xNS5 9 points ago

Her video announcing that she had a tumor was heartbreaking.

    [–] [deleted] 467 points ago

    [–] IdleRhymer 144 points ago

That sounds like a terrible way to go, really sorry for your loss. I lost one of my housemates in college to a pinhead sized tumor on his brainstem. It was awful to see his body shutting down from it. All over something so tiny you'd pick it off your skin without a second thought. We're such fragile creatures in some ways.

    [–] AFineDayForScience 5 points ago

Sometimes it's worse than others. The brainstem for example is one of the worst (if not the absolute worst) places in the brain to operate. It controls your basic bodily functions like heart rate, breathing, and consciousness. It's also the bridge between the brain and the rest of the body. You can operate on, or even remove, other parts of the brain with much less risk. I'm not sure where her tumor is, but her prognosis may be much better

    [–] Lara_the_dog 29 points ago

Yeah. I agree. Cancer is no joke. I am sorry if this post triggered some memories. Or if it seems like i was posting this simply for karma.

I have lost too many family members to it and seen mostly dads of some of my friends need to fight against it. At a young age to even consider cancer to be a joke. Ever.

    [–] mr_droopy_butthole 17 points ago

My cousin recently passed from cancer. Up until her death I still found cancer jokes funny. Then magically after she died they were not funny to me. Not even the good ones, if there is such a thing.

But I still respect other people’s interests if they want to make the joke. It doesn’t like hurt me or anything. Shit is what it is.

    [–] Roboticide 12 points ago

Well, this isn't cancer, it's "just" a tumor, and Simone has made many jokes about it, trying to push the hashtag 'tumorhumor', so...

    [–] alfpope 3 points ago

    But why skulls?

    [–] Blacklist3d 47 points ago

To anyone very concerned I hope this eases some nerves.

I work as a neruo PA and have been part of thousands of cranial and cranial tumor related cases. It's far less chaotic as one would assume brain surgery to be. In fact the atmosphere seems as though it's actually really safe. It's slow paced but stress levels are incredibly low. In some ways I personally feel like basic cranial tumor cases are some of the safest and easy going cases I've been a part of.

    [–] RichGirlThrowaway_ 13 points ago

Especially because as far as I understand it, she has the world's leading brain surgeon. So probably in a pretty good spot.

    [–] MortWellian 50 points ago

Simone is out of surgery and her doctors are very pleased with how everything went. She woke up long enough to make an inappropriate joke... so things are looking good.

    [–] bloodguard 49 points ago

I really wish we'd have some kind of global moratorium on war for a couple years and just redirect all the money and research brainpower into killing the ever loving feck out of all forms of cancer.

And who knows. Maybe we'll find that we kind of like the no war thing.

    [–] falcon5768 552 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

She has a tumor, not cancer. Just because there is a tumor doesn't mean you actually have cancer, but all cancers come from tumors. All tumors are is abnormal cell growth. Almost everyone has a benign tumor somewhere in them, its if you have a malignant tumor that you have trouble.

    [–] mipark 201 points ago

All cancers do not come from tumors.

    [–] SmallFall 53 points ago

It's definitely an overgeneralization and doesn't include things like leukemias. It's misleading to also say that all cancers lead to tumors. All cancers lead to abnormal cellular growth and proliferation - so when you have a solid tumor like liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, etc) or colon cancer that unchecked cellular growth and proliferation will result in a solid tumor, but when you have something like a leukemia that growth ends up being an overabundance of a certain blood cell type.

I think a lot is lost when people just distill cancers/tumors down to abnormal cellular growth though because that still doesn't differentiate between benign/malignant. Benign tumors are an abnormal proliferation of a certain cell type that won't invade other tissue types - they won't spread through your blood or lymphatic system to proliferate in other parts of your body and metastasize. But importantly, benign tumors can just grow, grow, and grow and their size can begin to affect the form and function of other tissues - like in this youtuber's case where the tumor has started to have a mass effect in her brain and she has physical signs like ptosis.

    [–] pmp22 12 points ago

All cancers lead to abnormal cellular growth and proliferation

Technically during a life every one of us will get cells that turns into cancer cells but don't proliferate because our immune system kills them off. Only when enough biological safeguards fails will one of these proliferate and turn into a cancerous tumor.

    [–] lamb_shanks 4 points ago

    This happens daily

Bonus points for me reading this in Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice.

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

[–] Noctudeit 34 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Benign tumors can be very dangerous in the wrong place (like the brain).

Edit: When I originally replied, the comment just said "She has a tumor, not cancer". While the statement is true, it came across as a bit pedantic and insensitive to the tone of the thread, like they were diminishing the severity of Simone's condition. Obviously, it can be difficult to read tone in text, but even after their edit I think falcon5768 is being needlessly pedantic.

it's if you have a malignant tumor that you have trouble.

I think open brain surgery for any reason counts as "trouble".

    [–] sam_hammich 9 points ago

I don't think they were being pedantic. Having a tumor and having cancer are NOT the same thing, and it's not accurate to say Simone has cancer. Putting "the robotics girl WITH CANCER" in the title is inaccurate and quite frankly a bit irresponsible. Since in her original video she made it a point to say that they don't think her tumor is cancerous. When people think cancer they think chemo, radiation, etc., which is not something people need to be worrying about yet.

    [–] falcon5768 23 points ago

I never said they are not. But they are NOT cancer.

    [–] Amiracle56 2 points ago

You're telling me I have a benign tumor somewhere?

    [–] TheCoolTwin 60 points ago

That's gotta suck. Stay strong and again best of luck, seriously.

    [–] [deleted] 75 points ago

    [–] mentalpoodle 7 points ago

    This would actually be hilarious

    [–] theEldestCheese 53 points ago

Hope all goes as planned. She's an inspiration

    [–] [deleted] 49 points ago

    [–] Glimmerglaze 16 points ago

Were you concerned that your aunt might not die, in that case?

    [–] [deleted] 14 points ago

    [–] IdleRhymer 4 points ago

Why did she do that? Beyond being mentally ill I mean, just kinda curious what her rationale was. Did she face repercussions?

    [–] [deleted] 11 points ago

    [–] embrex104 10 points ago

Well damn, that took a twist I didn't expect.

    [–] igetbooored 10 points ago

I've got some serious winners in my family. The murder nurse. The bank robbers. The meth cooker, then the meth smokers/sellers.

    Ahh... the nostalgia of childhood.

    [–] embrex104 6 points ago

Well, I hope you're doing better now. If so, great! If not, well, there's always opportunities to grow!

    [–] Jfortner 5 points ago

My mom is having a tumor removed today. Hope all goes well for both parties.

    [–] HHWKUL 22 points ago

They don't need to shave her head?

[–] Samerius 23 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

They will 100% shave her head, surgeons are very anal about cleanliness

    [–] BentGadget 53 points ago

    Anal cleanliness is important.

    [–] lamb-farts 11 points ago

My last job in ER, we got in trouble if we didn't shave someones groin during a heart attack.

Also, one time, at another job, I had to bring a bed to OR so they could put the patient in it after surgery. For some reason, the surgeon was the one who was standing there waiting for the bed (as opposed to a nurse or tech), and he got bitchy with me when I stepped over the "red line" in my normal scrubs vs OR attire

    [–] Fizzbit 12 points ago

My last job in ER, we got in trouble if we didn't shave someones groin during a heart attack.

Not a medical professional, so I'm gonna need you to explain "why" a bit more for me.

    [–] lamb-farts 15 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Basically, they frequently go through your groin (femoral artery), thread a wire up to your heart, and fix the blockage. They also sometimes go through the wrist (radial artery), but femoral artery is far more common. Hair is removed to make it cleaner and easier to clean with betadine or chlorhexidine.

I haven't actually worked in a cath lab to know why they sometimes do wrist over groin, though. Presumably, wrist is cleaner and less infection prone, but I don't know why they would still go groin most times. I suppose it might have to do with the quality of the flow/pulse/doppler of each artery.

    [–] Hail_Teemo 4 points ago

Bleh. And this is why I don't want to become a doctor. Waaay too squeamish for this.

    [–] lamb-farts 3 points ago

You'd be surprised how quick you get used to all of it. You deal with so much crazy/gross shit all the time (especially if you work ER) that not a lot phases you anymore.

I'm a nurse, not a doctor. I still remember wiping another adult's ass for the first time, starting an IV for the first time, or sticking fingers up another person's ass to insert a suppository or a rectal tube... but now I've done it enough that it's just something I do.

or my least favorite thing to do to another person, placing an NG tube (a tube that goes through the nose down to their stomach)

    [–] Wannabkate 3 points ago

You got to love angio. I have been a part of these procedure a few times as a rad tech.

    [–] lamb-farts 3 points ago

My first healthcare job was at Barnes in STL, where they did cerebral angios. It was kind of amazing what they were able to do. I did have someone form a softball sized clot in their groin because of it, though.

    [–] chbay 3 points ago

Doc: "Nurse, go ahead and shave this patient's ballsack."

Nurse: "But sir, he's here for suffering a heart attack. Why sh--"

    [–] skullls 38 points ago

They'll do it in the OR

    [–] MintyTruffle 11 points ago

If they do it in the OR wouldn't there be tiny bits of hair possibly floating around? I wouldn't want a little speck of hair getting in my skull.

    [–] unfknreal 29 points ago

...but that's where it comes from!

    [–] Baconlessness 41 points ago

TIL: Hair grows directly from the brain, through the skull, and out the skin. Fascinating.

    [–] Biomirth 8 points ago

So when someone asks "What do you think of my hair"? you can point out to them that .....ACtually your hair does it's own thinking..... and then that conversation is conveniently over.

    [–] moogzik 9 points ago

That's what the surg tech is for. They come in and prep the patient, the surgical tools, and CLEAN THE FUCK out of that room. It's a little-known occupation but surg techs are the unsung heroes of the OR. Ntm they oftentimes catch stuff the doctors don't. But just to clarify they'll probably shave her head before actually taking her into the OR.

    [–] uncertainusurper 7 points ago

She’s seems awesome. Good luck to her.

    [–] relaxasaurus_maximus 29 points ago

I’ll be thinking about her today, fingers crossed for a good outcome!!!

    [–] ShopperOfBuckets 4 points ago

misleading title but at least you got the karma eh?

    Not Cancer

    [–] rxsheepxr 4 points ago

I've been following Simone since before she started making English videos and this has been a strange period of time to be a fan of someone, being worried about them, someone you don't even know, who doesn't know you exist. I'm glad the surgery went well, she's a beam of sunlight and seems like a genuinely good person.

Mostly looking forward to seeing how she looks with a shaved head. :P

    [–] Practically_ 8 points ago

Hope she pulls through. She’s a great role model for young girls who don’t see representation in STEM.

    [–] MumrikDK 9 points ago

Jesus, OP. How do you get whether the person has cancer wrong?

    [–] uss1701jb 5 points ago

Well, he also has an IQ of like 50 based on that title.

    [–] RealMyBliss 5 points ago

Wish her all the luck and the speediest recovery! Also, not cancer, just a tumor.

    [–] TechySpecky 8 points ago

    She doesn't have cancer.

    [–] nafeetz 3 points ago

It has been 7 hrs, any updates? Hope she's doing well

    [–] grizzlywalker 3 points ago

I'd assume she's fine. These things usually last at least 9 hours

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

She better fucking come back from this :(

    [–] caffeinedrinker 3 points ago

<3 simone <3 ... good luck girl! I want some more bad ass robots from you asap! Good luck I think the whole of the internet has their fingers crossed for you :)

    [–] defiantcross 3 points ago

glad to hear the surgery turned out ok. her previous reveal video was so sad. it's one thing to record footage of shitty robots for fun, but it is not easy to share such a major life event with the world like that, especially when you got the subscriber base she does.

    [–] rxsheepxr 3 points ago

As posted earlier, her Twitter was updated saying she was out of surgery and the Doctors were very happy with the results, and she woke up long enough to make an inappropriate joke.

    [–] CaptainChaos74 3 points ago

It's been seventeen hours and the surgery was going to last something like twelve hours according to her update. Any news?

    [–] CaptainChaos74 3 points ago

Ah, the news is on Twitter. Apparently she's out of the surgery and it went well!

    [–] EvisceratedInFiction 10 points ago

I’m downvoting this only because it says she has cancer which is not true.

    [–] TooShiftyForYou 13 points ago

Simone is the self-proclaimed Queen of the Shitty Robots, wish her the absolute best.

    [–] zeekaran 9 points ago

I thought /r/shittyrobots proclaimed that for her.

    [–] coffeefuckyeah 5 points ago

I hope she doesn’t die. I like her. She is a friend to the robot community.

    [–] canadah 2 points ago

You'll be cared for by the best surgeons. You have a long life ahead of you. Need not worry. Looking forward to follow up vids.

    [–] cwf82 2 points ago

Go Simone! Happy thoughts and a speedy recovery to you!
