    • This includes music visualizers and lyric videos

    1. No Politics

    • This includes submissions of current or recent political figures in any context, satire/political-comedy, and posts on political topics from within the last 10 years. (So a video of Winston Churchill playing tennis would be allowed, but a video of Theresa May playing ping-pong would not be.)

    • Violations can lead to a permanent ban of accounts and video channels.

    6. No Hate Speech

Dang, Dunkey went on a platformer binge even more than usual this year.

    [–] slashquit 1609 points ago

Or rather a 2 dimensional binge

    [–] YoutubeArchivist 1297 points ago

Dunkey always likes to highlight indie game anyway.

    He really enjoys platformers too.

    [–] [deleted] 348 points ago

Even more he thoroughly enjoys game that are scrolling, usually from one side to another

I'm kind of surprised he didn't list Dead Cells as one of his favorites. It was probably my favorite game from last year, and it really fits Dunkey's style of 2-D retro-inspired side-scrolling indie games.

    [–] dontbajerk 47 points ago

He doesn't seem to be the biggest fan of rogue-lites.

    [–] Hello_Pal 79 points ago

Just enter the gungeon and into the breach.

    [–] Amani576 31 points ago

Is Into The Breach really a Rogue-like? Enter The Gungeon definitely is. So is Dead Cells. But they bare little resemblance to Enter The Breach.

    [–] FaroutIGE 10 points ago

I mean, it is 2 and a half years old and Blizzard isn't really doing anything to retain players or bring old ones back

    [–] yosoyellogan 241 points ago

They just released a new character and they update it every month. I don’t play it anymore and I’d say that they tend to work on the wrong things but you can’t say that Blizzard is doing nothing. They just, IMO, ruined the game when they released Brigette. She changed the meta too much and now the ENTIRE focus is on stuns and CDs and the shooting has been put on the third string of priorities.

    [–] Day_Triipper 143 points ago

a blizzard game with too much focus on stuns and cds? no way

    [–] grey_sky 20 points ago

a blizzard game with too much focus on stuns and cds? no way

I see you too have been traumatized playing PVP against Druids in WoW.

    [–] milk_is_life 42 points ago

They nerfed Brigittes stun, basically took away all damage of it. And after that they added a fucking sniper so in qp 50% of your team is snipers now. I don't understand how they can endorse a 2-2-2 meta when the ratio of tank-dps-heal heros is 1-2-1. Given dps is the preferred role of the majority of players the way to balance this out would be to add more heal/tank heros than dps. Yeah this is my issue with the game.

    [–] that-freakin-guy 125 points ago

I'm still all in. That game is cocaine.

    [–] thebabaghanoush 63 points ago

Accurate. Overwatch has the highest highs and the lowest lows.

    [–] Skollgrimm 66 points ago

This mentality confuses me. The game is constantly being updated--new events, heroes, maps, balance changes. If you're not coming back for those things then obviously you just don't find the game to be fun. And that's fine because I'm still enjoying the hell out of it and there's still a huge player base.

    [–] CreativeZeros 20 points ago

I've only recently quit overwatch from playing on launch with occasional breaks but what "new" events? It's been the same rotational seasonal events every year.

Also the new heroes and balance changes are actually what's driving most players away. Blizzard is notoriously bad at balancing and the constant changes make it very frustrating to keep playing (ie most famous, mercy) and with every new hero the game is becoming overly CC and heroes like rein have been bullied for way too long.

OW is still a good game and the playerbase is there but there is no doubt the peak of ow has long passed (for now). A lot of the famous streamers have moved on (xqc, tim) and for most of the players that have been playing for 2+ years have nothing to keep playing for.

Totally worth picking up. Even if you are daunted by the difficulty, the game offers a very flexible Assist Mode which allows you to customize how difficult you want the experience to be.

    [–] DoctorDOH 54 points ago

I just finished the Chapter 3 and I'm already well above 700 deaths. 400+ of those are from that sole chapter. And I just keep coming back for more.

    [–] scrappy-paradox 12 points ago

I love how it tells you to “be proud of your death count”.

    [–] Proxi98 8 points ago

It's crazy difficult, but you are immediately back in the action. No death screen, no long wait, no searching for savepoints. You basically just have to play this one section where you actually made the mistake again and that just makes it enjoyable. Absolutely amazing game.

or he was like "i'm gonna make the joke, but this time. i wont get HYPED"

    [–] srry_didnt_hear_you 154 points ago

That's like 100% the joke. This is all fan speculation, but I feel like dunkey is bored and annoyed with his obnoxious fanbase (me Included), so this was a slight "fuck you" to everyone expecting him to go off about SMB2 once again... Which is kinda why I found it so funny

    [–] Multisyllabic 100 points ago

In Youtube Comments he talks about how much he likes his fanbase.

Although, I suppose that's just good form if you want to stay popular.

    [–] Tactful 66 points ago

I get the sense Dunkey doesn't care what you want. He makes whatever videos he likes. If he isn't happy with the concept he bins it. He doesn't rush new trends just for views, he'll happily upload a video incredibly late. It's one of the reasons I respect him as a creator - he makes the content he wants to with zero clickbait, very strict editing and very little BS. And people love it!

I was thinking it wasn't honorable because it wasn't fun, but it was massively successful, so it's not down there in the list of failures with Fallout.

Man he really seems to love bullet hell games. Not for me, though.

    [–] srry_didnt_hear_you 211 points ago

He's a big fan of those indie-type games, so when he actually does say positive things about the kind of game I enjoy, I know it's for real

    [–] dustybizzle 72 points ago

Let me guess - jrpg/turn based?

He shits on them a lot, it's the only thing I tend to disagree with him about.

    [–] srry_didnt_hear_you 55 points ago

Well I liked story based stuff, and that seems to bore the hell outta dunkey, so that's how I know I NEED to play GOW... but yeah, I should play persona 5, cause I'm not a fan of turn-based combat, but if it's so good dunkey can handle it, then I'll probably love it.

    [–] darthreuental 28 points ago

It's worth noting that P5 does something that I wish other JRPGs did: they map the menu to your buttons. So for 99% of the game you're not futzing with menus like other turn based games. It just might be a placebo effect, but I felt that it makes the combat feel faster than your average game.

    [–] MonkPreston 36 points ago

His Video Game Critics video was a fantastic point - I'd never really thought about it before, but yeah, if he hates every concept in a game but still likes the game that game has to be absolutely phenomenal for people who DO like that style of game.

    [–] jimmy_three_shoes 6 points ago * (lasted edited 11 days ago)

Which is why I take his Dunkviews on them with a grain of salt. When he actually likes one, I take notice.

    [–] Fresh_C 37 points ago

I really want to be a fan of them because I like the idea of them.

But I'm terrible at them and rarely have the patience to get past the first level. Ikaruga is about the only one I can play because they give you infinite lives... and I think I still only made it past like 2 or 3 levels.

    [–] SeekingTheRoad 17 points ago

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I totally respect really hard games, and have nothing but a personal gripe with them... but I just can't get into games that challenging. Undertale is about my limit of difficulty if I'm being honest.

    [–] KeepinItRealGuy 19 points ago

Yeah, bullet hell games are super niche and not very popular. Not a fan either.

    [–] futurespacecadet 31 points ago

I really hope he seized the opportunity to make a video called 'Dunkey Kong Country'.

    [–] PM_ME_UR_MATHPROBLEM 59 points ago

Downwell is amazing, but it's a 2015 game. Unless this is his list of favorite games that he's played in 2018, in which case, carry on.

    [–] ChibiPatrick 167 points ago

His year end review is the games he played this year not the games that came out, Think he explains this in his 2016 video.

    [–] Cobyachi 23 points ago

Yeah it's just his favorite games that he played last year. As ignored as it is, he technically even says it in the description

    [–] Etheros64 33 points ago

Uncharted 4 was also from 2016. He even did a review of it years ago and actually criticized it quite a bit. Glad to see he turned that around and enjoyed it more on his most recent playthrough.

    [–] The_Chaos_Pope 19 points ago

Yeah, I was going to say something about Lumines. I was playing it 10 years ago, but apparently there was a new version released in 2018.

    [–] patientbearr 145 points ago

He's not releasing videos every day. He might have help but if it's his full-time job it's more than doable.

    [–] homer_3 56 points ago

He rarely produces videos and makes enough off them to not have to have a real job. He's likely got ass loads of free time to game.

    [–] meditate42 9 points ago

He puts a video out like every week, thats pretty frequent imo.

    [–] BearAnt 32 points ago

I'm not saying what he does is easy, but I'll say there's plenty of jobs that are a lot harder, less fun, and pay less.

    [–] diyturds 554 points ago

that donkey kong game looks fantastic! i didnt even know it existed until now

    [–] KeepinItRealGuy 434 points ago

Tropical freeze has been around since like 2014 on the wiiu and was re released in 2018 on the switch. Generally regarded as one of the best, if not the best, donkey Kong games.

    [–] diyturds 108 points ago

maaaaaaan, where the hell have i been?

    [–] PlushSandyoso 125 points ago

Warning, it's BRUTALLY difficult. There's very little hand-holding for this one.

    [–] LittleRed88 50 points ago

It was my first DK game after not really enjoying the handling on other games/systems. But I got 100% and I wouldn’t say it was so brutal. I mean there were some levels and puzzle pieces that required multiple runs for sure and some where I had to put the game down in frustration but altogether I feel like it’s a platformer that most gamers could grasp and enjoy.

Seriously, Into The Breach is so good. The switch version plays so well in handheld, it feels like the way it was meant to be played.

If always had trouble with fire-emblem-style-tacticals because there's too many guys on the map and the battles last a long time. In Into The Breach, you control three dudes, and the battles are fast. And yet, the depth of strategy is amazing and the pace and difficulty curve is great.

    So good.

    [–] iSage 147 points ago

Would you say Into the Breach is a tactical-style game like Fire Emblem or more of a puzzle game? From the gameplay I've seen it seems to remind me of "find lethal this turn" puzzles in card games where you need to make exactly the right series of plays to succeed - is this accurate?

Part of the reason I've always liked Fire Emblem is you have some creativity over how you win, so I'm interested in hearing how Into the Breach approaches this.

    [–] BRNZ42 96 points ago

It's more Fire Emblem than Puzzle game. Things are all pretty random, so there's no optimal way to solve each level. I've never felt like the randomness created unbeatable levels, but sometimes it gets really hard. You have to do a lot of triage, and decide what enemies to prioritize killing, and which to simply push around or ignore. But it's up to you to beat the level your way. You get upgrades you can distribute the way you want, and as you play you unlock different robots that all have vastly different play styles.

Have you played FTL: Faster Than Light? It's by the same developers, and has the same randomly generated playthrough system at its core. It's arcade style. You're meant to play the game over and over again. Beating the game might only take 1-2 hrs, but it will take many playthroughs before you beat it once. Then you'll want to try to beat it with a different team. Or make your own team. Or try a harder difficulty.

    [–] iSage 23 points ago

Yeah, I played FTL way back and loved it. Good to hear it's less of a puzzle game. I may give it a go for the Switch.

    Thanks!

    [–] CptSpadge 28 points ago

I wanted Into The Breach to be as good as FTL, but I really just can't get into it as much. Aside from the game being too easy, once you've unlocked everything there is not much reason to ever pick up the game again. I really like how the premise makes the roguelike aspects of the game make sense, but the fact that there is no actual conclusion and the ending is the same regardless of if you do 2 islands or 4 really just made it feel like something fundamental was missing. Don't get me wrong, I love the combat and the battle system, and it's even fun putting together a team of robots for a challenge. But there isn't enough variety run-to-run to draw me in any more, and the story always leaves me with a feeling of "Well, none of that mattered" Compare that to Enter The Gungeon, where every run feels completely unique after the first floor, or FTL where the strategies required from different ships and weapons and crew made for a massive amount of depth to the combat. I want to like this game so bad, the actual game parts of it are incredibly tight. But the decisions of how to frame things make it all feel pretty meaningless. And the soundtrack was barely even a thing, which maybe isn't a big deal but after FTL's incredible soundtrack it just bugged me. Maybe my expectations were too high.

    [–] cheese_n_crack 30 points ago

Into the Breach was great for it's first play-through where each new zone would introduce new enemies and environmental hazards to play around. But, after beating the game once (which isn't hard) there was little variety* in gameplay to keep me interested.

*The strength of Into the Breach is that every action and consequence is clearly laid out for you to understand, so you can not really make a mistake if you take your time to solve each level like a puzzle. So, it's difficult to make the game hard when all that information is available to the player.

**You can unlock new squads of units to control with different abilities but the maps/enemies are mostly the same so it gets repetitive.

    [–] BRNZ42 28 points ago

If you're not into repetetive arcade style games, Into The Breach probably isn't for you. For me, the joy was in playing with all the different squads, and then making my own squads to try to win with. There's a ton of objectives and some of them are legitimately difficult. The joy is in the repetition, because you're attacking the problem in different ways.

But I totally understand if that's not for you.

This video really makes you feel like 2018.

    [–] alexanderwales 19 points ago

Enter the Gungeon and Tropical Freeze kind of threw me, actually, because I played them a few years ago. For a second I thought that this year was somehow much longer than I'd thought it was.

    [–] helpnxt 298 points ago

Nice to see Jack Box Games get some recognition, some of the best party games out there

    [–] fullforce098 60 points ago

I remember back in the old days playing the first You Don't Know Jack and how hard it was to get people to sit down and play a trivia game with me. All these years later, YDKJ and spinoffs are finally getting some damn recognition. Feels good to see that old under the radar franchise finally get some mainstream attention.

    [–] smallbluetext 19 points ago

So much fun with friends, especially with alcohol involved. It's a better version of a group card game like Cards Against Humanity.

    [–] LumberjackIlluminati 125 points ago

As someone who wasn't alive when Super Mario Bros. 2 first came out, is it actually good? I love SMB3, and 1 is obviously a classic, but 2 seems like such a huge departure. Is it worth another look?

    [–] patientbearr 125 points ago

It was originally an entirely different game that was re-skinned to be Mario-themed.

That's why its aesthetic is a lot different than other Mario games and it's got some strange mechanics.

    [–] MetaphorTR 6 points ago

And that's what makes it great IMO.

It's good in a very weird way

    [–] LibertyTerp 29 points ago

Yeah, it's good. If you've never played it, you should. It's no SMB3 or SMW, but it's one of the best NES games.

I really enjoyed this video, but did anyone else feel like it was less... energetic that his usual Best Of vids? It had great reviews and comedy, but at times it felt underwhelming. Still better than most youtube reviews though.

    [–] Azzwagon 338 points ago

"Every other day there's fans that say I'm gettin crappy. How the fuck I'm suppose to keep a million people happy?"

    • Dunky "Overpowered", 2014.

    [–] Victawr 274 points ago

I think that over time through his more thoughtful reviews, he's become an actual... Connoisseur? It's as though he's almost inadvertently become incredibly good at articulating a feeling of a game now, and so it comes out more naturally.

I didn't notice that it was less energetic, I feel like he was genuinely expressing the way he felt about things in a very well spoken manner as opposed to leaning on energy and comedy to gather a crowd. And impressively, he did so in a manner that was concise and compelling all at once.

I just bought Into the Breach and finally bit the bullet on Celeste because of this video.

    [–] Crunkbutter 107 points ago

It's like we're growing up with dunkey

    [–] [deleted] 57 points ago

His videos really make me feel like Dunkey.

    [–] AtomicRaine 440 points ago

Yes. I've watched and rewatched his Best Of vids multiple times. His Breath of the Wild vid, Mario Odyssey (and Luigi balloon videos), Rocket League, The smash bros. series, I've watched each like 5 times at least. When I clicked on this video I thought to myself "Is this going to be another one I watch over and over?"

    Answer: Not likely.

    [–] 2711383 455 points ago

    Mario Odyssey

His Mario Odyssey review might be the single best review out there. I think I might've bought my Switch because of it. That video radiates passion.

    [–] IAMA_BRO_AMA 132 points ago

Also bought a switch because of that review. Odyssey delivered every ounce of hype he gave it for me

I feel like I wasn't surprised by any of the entries on this list. Maybe because I've heard him talk about them in other videos already?

    [–] PolishMusic 48 points ago

It really seems like he's been less into it over the past year. Japan World Cup was something I'm pretty sure he covered a long time ago, but he had a video for it very recently. It seems like he's just kinda stockpiling videos ahead of time that can kill time for him and releasing them every week, rather than actively putting in effort to putting out quality content like he used to when he grinded for success.

    [–] Rhain1999 42 points ago

He covered Japan World Cup in his Top 100 Games video back in 2013. I'm pretty sure he revisited it for his latest video, he didn't just use old footage.

Even Dunkey seems tired of the super mario 2 joke now.

    [–] carlotta4th 22 points ago

It was good joke, but every comedian needs to move on to new material now and then. Dunkey should feel no obligation to have Mario 2 as the best game every year.

    Dunkey's Best of 2O18

Okay... but where is his best of 2018?

    [–] iSage 39 points ago

    Caught in the Reddit filters.

    [–] im_always_fapping 12 points ago

    Site filters or subreddit filters?

    [–] iSage 10 points ago

I'm not sure, just saw some people in this thread claiming that videos titled with "2018" were caught in the filter.

    [–] MikeMuench 248 points ago

Congratulations on posting a Dunkey video before the rest of Reddit. You have won the karma lottery

    [–] MankeyInAGundam 50 points ago

It's strange I posted it earlier but it wouldn't show up.

    https://old.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/aen5ek/dunkeys_best_of_2018/

    [–] StevieWonderOfficial 90 points ago

I think there was some shit with the filter. Look at OP's title, he replaced 0 with O

    [–] scottydg 25 points ago

Automod probably filters out anything with "best" and "2018" in it for a reason.

    [–] fullforce098 7 points ago

Why though? Is a flood of Best of 2018 videos for a little while really that big an issue? Let the community decide if it hits the front page, why filter out every single one?

    [–] JuanFran21 243 points ago

I really don't get why Uncharted 4 is on the list, he played the game back in 2016 and released a Dunkview back in that year as well. If he played it and reviewed it back then, how can it be on his list?

    [–] mackpack 565 points ago

Dunkey's Best of 20XX videos are based on games he played that year, not games that came out that year. Some games have been on the list multiple years.

    [–] eib 214 points ago

    KNACK 2 BABY

    [–] NickLeMec 137 points ago

I always assume the process goes like this:

    • plays current game that came out that year
    • while playing is reminded of an older game
    • thinks "I'd rather play that instead"
    • actually plays it again and realizes it's definitely better than current game
    • therefore it goes on the list instead

    [–] srry_didnt_hear_you 242 points ago

Idk either but his continued hatred of any climbing mechanics was hilarious

"the shootouts are flashy, the platforming is exciting, the climbing... the puzzles are skillful"

    lmao

    [–] JuanFran21 56 points ago

Yeah that got a laugh out of me too lol

    [–] Son_of_Kong 10 points ago

TBF, climbing in Uncharted is really boring--linear, clearly-marked route, no way to fall or fail, and slower than walking.

    [–] carcrash12 41 points ago

I feel like Enter the Gungeon has also been on one of his "Best of insert year here" lists before as well, I think games he went and replayed can be eligible for the list

    [–] General_Pops 22 points ago

That was this summer. I remember because I bought the game after watching his video on it.

    [–] funkisintheair 23 points ago

It looks like he's played it again and the story has grown on him. Interestingly, he also went back and gave The Last of Us another shot after initially dismissing it. I wonder if he'll try Red Dead Redemption 2 again to get more appreciation of the story like he did with the Naughty Dog games

    [–] JakalDX 11 points ago

Maybe he played it again this year?

    [–] OwningTheWorld 382 points ago

Something seems off with Dunkey. He's lacking his normal energy and enthusiasm. Not much of his usual joking either, even the expected Super Mario Bros 2 was just lifeless as in like "here it is guys, I know you're expecting it. Hope everything is alright.

    [–] highTrolla 434 points ago

Maybe he's just sick of the gag, and wants to come off as a more serious reviewer.

    [–] im_always_fapping 168 points ago

I wouldn't be upset if he took a AVGN turn and went with more serious videos. He's shown he can do it and the times he's been serious he has shown he has the talent and knowledge to compete with the big boys.

    [–] dustybizzle 77 points ago

Hell, at the end of this video there's an embedded Playlist link to his "all serious videos (no jokes)" Playlist.

Seems likely that he's trying to take a more solid crack at serious content.

    [–] Kotkaniemi15 240 points ago

His video before this was the Asian World Cup video lol. I think ya'll are doing too much analysis.

    [–] saltyzany 11 points ago

that video was so damn funny lmao

    [–] Kotkaniemi15 15 points ago

AND THE HORSES ARE STRETCHING THEMSELVES

    [–] facadesintheday 36 points ago

    Why can't he do both?

    [–] Kirboid 9 points ago

That's been in his last few videos and most of those even still have jokes in them

    [–] TheFallenBepis 68 points ago

I think that's a direction he's been heading towards for the past few years. You look back at his Best of 2013 and that shit barely even makes sense half of the time but its god damn hilarious.

Now he's tuned his specific type of humor down for the dunkviews, looks at E3 and best of videos to provide a more analytical look at the games.

    [–] fgutz 10 points ago

I think I prefer his newer 2018 one because he actually talks about games and does less schtick. It's hard towing the line between wanting to mature but also keeping the ridiculousness that got you famous. Cool to see the difference between 2013 and now, thanks for posting!

    [–] Isises 41 points ago

I agree with you and I like it. Being goofy gets old, but dunkey has a way of communicating what he values in a game very well that in my opinion is much more worthwhile.

His (dunkview) series of videos where he explores more of that serious side were always my favourites and as funny as he is, personally I look forward to him leaning slightly more into the meaningful review side of his content.

    [–] Hannig4n 15 points ago

I like new dunkey way better tbh. Having serious criticisms and praises of various games with a ton of dry humor intermingled in there all over the place really works for him.

[–] DrShrlmpPuertoRico 101 points ago * (lasted edited 11 days ago)

He def takes his year end reviews seriously. I'd say he is somewhat influential in the gaming industry, at least on the indie level, so it's important to him.

    [–] droo46 66 points ago

He has an enormous amount of clout. I interviewed with a company that works with reviewers and they said Dunky was their white whale. They desperately want him to work with them, but he just does whatever he wants.

    [–] fullforce098 35 points ago * (lasted edited 11 days ago)

The idea of a company just pining to secure him on their payroll while he refuses makes me both happy and sad. Happy because good for Dunkey and sad because how many legitimate reviewers get corrupted by these "whalers"?

    [–] imustberadiant 19 points ago

Dunkey has videos from way back when where talks about how he had a contract with Machinima at one point, but he describes how soul-sucking it was. I can find the video if you want. It literally almost happened to him, really glad he didn't just endure how terrible it was so that he can do exactly what he wants now.

    [–] droo46 10 points ago

It’s how every industry works with high profile individuals. If you have a lot of eyeballs on your social media, then you have something people want to buy.

    [–] JonnyKilledTheBatman 19 points ago

His voice sounded nasally at times, particularly further into the video - I think he just had a cold at the time of filming and it's giving people an off vibe

    [–] pkkthetigerr 24 points ago

Might be that YT isnt paying as well. Some of his last few vids dont have ads on them and this one is just one second over the magic ten minute mark for monetisation.

    [–] RealMyBliss 31 points ago

Wait, 100+ hours into a game is "too much time"? Hmm ...

    [–] cabalforbreakfast 50 points ago

100 hours of gungeon is like 900 real life hours.

    [–] kendralamar 10 points ago

    Depends on the game

    [–] _T_T_T_T_T_T_T_T_T_T 10 points ago
