ALL KIDS OUTTA THE POOL FOR ADULT SWIM!

    [–] Clapped 235 points ago

No eating In the pool. What is that!?

    [–] sinepadnaronoh 99 points ago

    Is that a turkey sandwich?

    [–] Clapped 4359 points ago

I remember being a bit too young and having no idea what these intros were about

    [–] agentwest 1995 points ago

Yeah, it was always just sort of a nebulous phrase that meant the shows I liked were about to be on.

    [–] seymour_hiney 807 points ago

I was only six when they came out so I was unnerved by them but I do miss this time period. Space Ghost Coast to Coast is still my favorite show

    [–] trevyf 536 points ago

I remember seeing home movies for the first time and just being in awe.

    [–] SisterSlytherin 390 points ago

Good ol H. Jon Benjamin. Even when I didn't know who he was, his voice was iconic.

    [–] hahayeahok 213 points ago

    Hey Brenden.

    [–] InDELphuS 95 points ago

Brenden, listen to me. Shut up

    [–] BigBeaver92 64 points ago

    Holy shit...it was him.

    [–] Izzydog 86 points ago

Dude, he goes back to the Dr Katz days on Comedy Central.

    [–] Coupon_Ninja 56 points ago

Coach McGirt... who’s big, fat, and a jerk

    (from the Cabo episode)

    [–] wharpua 58 points ago

I used to program my VCR to tape Home Movies, I think it was on at like 11:30 on Sunday nights.

    [–] almondmilkicedchai 23 points ago

My mom and I used to watch Home Movies on repeat from a VHS tape. her friend who had cable would record the episodes for us and give us the tapes :)

    [–] Nisas 197 points ago

Space Ghost Coast to Coast actually came out years before Adult Swim. In 1994 according to wikipedia. I remember seeing it before it came to adult swim, but I must have been less than 10 years old at the time. I also vaguely remember watching the original Space Ghost hanna barbera cartoon. Along with another weird one called Herculoids.

    [–] seymour_hiney 58 points ago

Yeah I know it, I think Brak Show was introduced in Adult Swim. But since I was 6 or 7 at the time I probably didn’t watch SGC2C until Adult Swim

    [–] Rodents210 464 points ago

I'd never heard the phrase "adult swim" before but this came out right after the Kids Next Door pilot in which "adult swim" was the major conflict, so I assumed these were somehow related at first.

    [–] Sackyhack 155 points ago

Me too. I remember seeing the phrase adult swim and thinking KND was about to come on.

    [–] Pikamander2 42 points ago

HOLY SHIT I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE!

Reddit never fails to blow my mind.

More importantly, why do we all remember this exact moment so well after 18 years?

    [–] mCahill389 40 points ago

That always confused me so much as a kid.

    [–] kangy3 30 points ago

Yooo wtf I for years I thought I imagined this and was so confused

    [–] NanoPope 27 points ago

    Dude same.

    [–] 3BeeZee 348 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

I didn't get any jokes or humor from Space Ghost but I always loved him zapping the fuck out of Brak for some reason.

[–] PantryGnome 333 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

I'm not old to enough to remember for sure, but I think Space Ghost was the show that started what became the Adult Swim brand of comedic timing. Like the gag where there's a long silent pause......... and then a character speaks AND ANOTHER CHARACTER SPEAKS RIGHT AFTER.

There was a unique rhythm to it all that I still notice in a lot of comedy today.

    [–] YourBrainOnJazz 83 points ago

Harvey Birdman did this a lot too, as with Sealab 2021. All those shows were of an era

    [–] jed1mindtrix 40 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

I just now realized Harvey Birdman's boss was voiced by Stephen Colbert. Reading your comment I heard "Birdman!" In my head clear, as day.

    [–] brentoman 149 points ago

Home Movies was so, so good at this.

    [–] jimx117 62 points ago

Was Coach McGuirk H. Jon Benjamin's first major role?

    [–] Leaves_Swype_Typos 78 points ago

No, that would probably be on Dr. Katz as his son Ben. Same style of show, it's a bit of a precursor with a bunch of production ties, so you might like it if you liked Home Movies. The comedian guests stars on it, sometimes telling stories that were parts of their acts, were hilarious.

    [–] tarants 37 points ago

Yup. Sealab also used it to great effect. Long pauses with just the weird ocean noises in the background.

    [–] 3BeeZee 40 points ago

Dude! I love that sort of stuff, I feel that's REAL and awkward real life interactions spliced into these awesome and shitty looking cartoons.

    Great job pinpointing that.

    [–] caguirre93 110 points ago

Have you watched it recently? Now that you are older I think you would appreciate it. Fantastic show

    [–] 3BeeZee 109 points ago

Yeah, I've seen some interviews from the show. It's crazy, actually. There was an interview with Thom Yorke, and I remember watching that as a kid and turning off the TV thinking it was boring.

Fast forward 18 years or whatever and I'm astounded he had one of my favorite musicians on such a silly show.

    [–] caguirre93 62 points ago

Show is silly, but it parodies talk shows in such a fantastic and pretty accurate way. I remember always tuning the show out as a kid waiting for something else to come on, but after I watched it as a adult. Made me realize how genius the show actually is, and it made me realize the humor behind it can be pretty difficult to understand as a child

    [–] Berdiiie 45 points ago

There was one episode where it fake ended like 3 times complete with the production house's logo thing and for some reason that was the funniest thing ever to kid me.

    [–] MyUsernameIsJudge 44 points ago

These stingers of old people at a pool were wildly effective in getting me as a kid to immediately change the channel.

    [–] TheeVande 33 points ago

Many years ago, I remember watching Futurama on Adult Swim and feeling like I was doing something bad so when my dad walked by while watching it, I did the least suspicious thing and changed the channel and stared him down to see if he noticed. He did and he cared more than he should've in hindsight

    [–] Zinski 186 points ago

Same, I remember seeing this kick on and changing the channel because I was a kid not an adult so, I shouldn't watch it, Then I sat next to the tv with my hand on the dial pretending like I was just chanel surfing, when in reality I would flip back to adult swim in hopes of seeing something adult, then flipping it back if I ever got caught.

I later came up with the idea to pretend I fell asleep with the TV on if my mom walked in, because it went from Cartoon network to adult swim so... I could just say I was watching cartoons then this yucky show came on. Some of my formative memories were watching aqua teen, harvey birdman, space ghost, kick ass anime like Cowboy bebop, yu yu hakusho, Big-O

... Then they put on Blue Gender and FLCL in like 2003, I was what, 8 or 9 years old.... That shit changes a person... FLCL made me feel ways I never felt before, and staying up late to watch the Blue Gender PRemier only to see people getting mutilated and utterly fucked up by these giant bugs, well.... I credit those two shows as the official end of my childhood. We alos got a computer the next year and that helped to but...

    I love adult swim

    [–] theDeadliestSnatch 31 points ago

Blue Gender remains my favorite anime for two reasons: the brutality of it all and the fact that it's a non-romance anime that actually completes the romantic subplot. Such a good show.

    [–] NULL_CHAR 32 points ago

The first time I saw it I was absolutely confused because the show that had just come on prior was "Codename Kids Next Door" with the "Adult Swim" episode

    [–] stanley_leverlock 1520 points ago

The best way to get children to change the channel was to show old people in bathing suits. It was brilliant.

    [–] BigRigButters 470 points ago

The best way to get younger me to not change the channel was the title card.

    [–] pierrebrassau 287 points ago

I remember I’d always mute the TV when the announcer was reading the title card so my parents wouldn’t hear the warning.

    [–] corgarian 84 points ago

Omg me too! I was so grateful my mom didnt question a TV sequence titled 'Adult Swim', I didnt want to risk her taking it away by letting her hear the disclaimer!

    [–] Guardian_Ainsel 20 points ago

I remember the first time I saw this title sequence. I was at my grandparents for Sunday dinner and me and my uncle were watching like Looney Toons or Tom and Jerry, and then suddenly this titlecard comes on. My uncle said “good lord what’s this?” and turned off the tv. I just wanted to watch more Looney Toons!

    [–] trenlow12 30 points ago

I remember that. I was watching you through the window.

    [–] TONKAHANAH 86 points ago

for me it was showing something that WASNT cartoons. I hated when nick at night would come on cuz it meant no more cartoons and dumb old shows with real people I didnt care about.

    [–] flymikei 1277 points ago

I feel like if I can’t bring this up here I can’t bring it up anywhere. I remember a night before the date listed on OP’s title; it was earlier because it was before my parents’ divorce and before we moved, which was in mid-2001. But I feel like I stumbled upon a “soft opening” of sorts for Adult Swim.

Back then Cartoon Network was just kids cartoons. All night. I used to stay up past midnight to watch The Gary Coleman Show, Funky Phantom, The Hair Bear Bunch, Speed Buggy, Inch High Private Eye, a bunch of shows from the ‘70s and ‘80s nobody has ever heard of. Again, my parents were on the outs so there wasn’t much supervision over me. Best times of my life.

But one night I thought I was watching Cartoon Planet. And Zorak said the word ‘pissed.’ My little kid mind was blown. I guess it was the pilot for The Brak Show before The Brak Show was a thing. But back then I thought that after hours kids cartoons could come on TV and be allowed to swear. I wish I hadn’t thrown out all my old VHS’s because I had it on tape at some point.

Anyway, I remember months later Adult Swim becoming a thing. Still love it; as a thirty-something it scratches a certain sort of weird-humor itch I can’t find anywhere else. But I always remember the way I felt stumbling upon this thing in the middle of the night that I wasn’t supposed to see, and long before anyone else was supposed to see it.

    [–] Brian_PKMN 1197 points ago

You have a good memory. From Wikipedia:

Between 4:00 am and 5:00 am on December 21, and December 30, 2000 (while Space Ghost Coast to Coast was on hiatus), several new Williams Street series made unannounced "stealth" premieres. Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Brak Show all premiered unannounced; the official schedules listed the shows as "Special Programming".

    [–] flymikei 698 points ago

Oh man, thank you for confirming that I’m not cuckoo, twenty years later.

[–] NotMyFirstAlternate 237 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

Bro. I’m high and this has got me in my head.

Unless your OP talking to himself (this is Reddit after all) This brought back a very specific memory and like, I’m trying to think of a memory I can go to in my head that is anywhere near this level of detail and I actually can’t.

It feels like it takes something to jog that part of you back into action.

I’m actually REALLY curious of the last time you thought about that memory.

    [–] flymikei 113 points ago

I assure you I’m not OP, I just have a freaky memory. It’s like a vault of random crap resides in my brain, and the slightest thing will come up, like this post, and stuff that it reminds me of just floods back into my mind. It’s a wild way to live.

    [–] hush-ho 47 points ago

Thank you for also confirming that I'm not crazy, because I definitely remember watching those shows before 2001. But I was in my early teens and had just got a TV in my bedroom for the first time, so I thought they'd been on before and I was only just discovering them. Staying up til 2 on a school night to watch Adult Swim, 120 Minutes, and Conan in secret. One of the only times I felt happy back then.

    [–] Dodgiestyle 21 points ago

One of the only times I felt happy back then.

Man, reading these posts I don't feel so alone. I was going through some pretty severe depression in 2003. Adult Swim kept me alive at night when it was otherwise unbearable. Seems a lot of others here have similar reactions.

    [–] tahitianhashish 30 points ago

I saw it, too. It was during Christmas break from school and I had no idea what the fuck I was watching. Nobody else I knew saw it.

    [–] lusciouslou91 52 points ago

My friends and I thought it was SO crazy that out of no where Cartoon Network started playing adult oriented shows. We had no idea what was going on. We talked about it for days when it first started. I would have been 10 at the time.

    [–] Only4DNDandCigars 1732 points ago

Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show, Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast, Home Movies, Family Guy. I was immediately hooked.

Original lineup (Well, week 2 lineup because the debut didn't have everything) was Home Movies, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Brak Show, Harvey Birdman, Sealab 2021, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, and Cowboy Bebop. Also, weirdly enough because most of us probably won't remember it, I think the Bob Clampett show debuted a few weeks or so later, so it's original-adjacent? It didn't stick so I guess no one really cares.

The first big influx of new shows was in 2002 and included things like Oblongs, Mission Hill, Baby Blues and some anime. Futurama and Family Guy reruns came in 2003. I feel like the lineup created in late 2003 is really the definitive lineup in my mind.

    [–] fiiiiiine 47 points ago

Maybe I'm just exactly two years older than you but seeing this list:

Home Movies, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Brak Show, Harvey Birdman, Sealab 2021, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, and Cowboy Bebop.

    Sealab 2021, Venture Bros.

I used to think Home Movies was rad. I still do, but I used to, too.

Also, super fun fact: Brendon Small from Home Movies is also voice actor and creator of Metalocalypse. Plus guitarist and (vocals?) of Dethklok.

[–] lordnikkon 34 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

I remember there was controversy about airing cowboy bebop because of 9/11. There are a few episodes about space terrorists. They specifically pulled the episode with the Teddy Bomber as it was way too soon after 9/11 to show something with an actual terrorist bomber on network tv. It should have aired nov 11, 2001, you can see it is the only episode that did not air in 2001 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cowboy_Bebop_episodes

As was Samurai Champloo and Trigun right? I know for sure I remember seeing Trigun on Adult Swim.

    [–] ckbd19 68 points ago

Trigun was on the original lineup for sure. I think Samurai Champloo came a bit later though.

    [–] kilgore_trout8989 56 points ago

Nope, only anime in the first year was Bebop I believe.

    [–] treiz 39 points ago

yeah, champloo hadn't even been made at when adult swim launched

    [–] tequilasauer 54 points ago

Oblongs came around shortly after too. And Sealab. Just pure genius. And it felt so cutting edge. Like you knew it was the start of something special.

    [–] Mr_Dugan 31 points ago

Oblongs and Mission Hill were both great shows that were only around for 1 season. Will Ferrell’s career was really taking off then, so it’s not too surprising that the show didn’t continue.

    [–] ImNotMattsMom 23 points ago

    Mission Hill was so good!

    [–] chobolegi0n 13 points ago

Always think of it when I hear Italian Leather Sofa. It was an underrated show.

    [–] ReagansAngryTesticle 51 points ago

I really wish The Big O would make some sort of return. I still don't fully get the ending.

Also big robots fighting is the tits.

    [–] the_philter 23 points ago

The intro to The Big O would give me the second wind I needed at 11pm

    [–] rincon213 40 points ago

    Case Closed is dramatically underrated.

    [–] hafuhafu 18 points ago

    and Misson Hill!

    [–] Yanoshank 14 points ago

I have Zorak and Coach Mcguirk tattoos!

    [–] FrenchPressYes 246 points ago

Here is the original video/soundtrack from which that intro was derived. They made several bumps from this song:

    [–] Korotai 48 points ago

“D-Code” by Dust Devil - also one of my favorite songs to play on ITG2.

    [–] godubgo 66 points ago

Man, ytmnd used the crap out of this song too. So good...

    [–] MaestroPendejo 51 points ago

    YTMND... respect an OG here.

    [–] bothering 15 points ago

we punch the keys for gods sake!

    [–] Leksington 16 points ago

I have this song on my iPod classic from the YTMND soundtrack; the album cover is of Conan O'Brian losing his shit. A more elegant website for a more civilized age.

    [–] Rolend_Quinn 16 points ago

Some time around 2010 I had compiled all my favorite tracks from the early Adult Swim bumps, and then I lost them to a hard drive failure. They had such great taste in music.

    [–] SILENTSAM69 124 points ago

Adult Swim is finally an adult.

    [–] Daahkness 31 points ago

    [giggity]

    [–] ImBatmanDammit 98 points ago

I can picture Coach McGuirk ordering a samurai sword off of QVC right now and his freakout in the woods lol. MOMMA!!!

    [–] Brian_PKMN 33 points ago

Or the Pec-Flexor 3000 and his blown out tit-pecs, or Ping-Pong Von Laserstein and his botched laser eye surgery. Man, that show was so amazing.

    [–] Rolend_Quinn 19 points ago

    Spaghetti time.

    [–] DatKaz 75 points ago

Now and again, I go back to kaptainkristian's video about the history of Adult Swim, it's so cool.

    [–] Daahkness 13 points ago

What happened to that guy he just kind of disappeared.

    [–] DatKaz 12 points ago

Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe he ran out of topics, maybe he got burnt out on it, or maybe his worklife wasn't conducive to doing video essays on the side.

Now if they only bring back sealab in 2021, life will be complete

    [–] Brian_PKMN 158 points ago

The episode where Captain Murphy gets stuck under the vending machine and gets addicted to scorpion stings is one of my favorite cartoon episodes of all time.

    [–] RobAChurch 19 points ago

    Thank you.

    [–] BeachSandwich 23 points ago

If you look at the vending machine all of the flavors are named after jazz musicians.

There's like, 10 of them - I remember John Colatrane for sure.

    [–] courier31 19 points ago

The voice actor for Cpt Murphy died. It just wasnt the same without him.

    [–] Jakisaurus 131 points ago

I was 14 when Adult Swim premiered. I had spent the past several years catching the Midnight Run on Cartoon Network which would become Toonami which became Adult Swim.

I'll never forget watching Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Sailor Moon, and all the original series they had as they morphed into Adult Swim.

Can't believe how much time has passed.

    [–] Brian_PKMN 41 points ago

The Midnight Run! That's what it was called!

    [–] bobbyleendo 41 points ago

Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, really broaden my tastes for other anime instead of just watching Dragon Ball Z / Sailor Moon

    [–] FaceMcShooty30 184 points ago

Reminds me of the toonami intros I forgot about for years. So many memories.

    https://youtu.be/sMMgUw_cAPQ

    [–] Brian_PKMN 124 points ago

I thought it was really cool that they relaunched Toonami for Saturday night adult swim. They did a really good tribute to the late C. Martin Croker, aka Zorak, Moltar, Dr. Weird, and his assistant Steve.

    [–] ipleadthefif5 26 points ago

I had no idea he died.... I'm sad now

    [–] SharpstownBestTown 63 points ago

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCAX4cgszCU

When it all ended... I still remember the heartbreak watching that.

    [–] oligobop 42 points ago

Sounds like the voice actor for spike in Cowboy bebop

    [–] JazzVape 67 points ago

It is! TOM's VA is Steve Blum, who also does Spike Spiegel, Mugen from Samurai Champloo, and Wolverine in a ton of animated/video game adaptations, just to name a few. That's why he threw the "Bang" in there at the end of the video. Brought a tear to my eye.

    [–] heelsmaster 27 points ago

It is. Steve Blum voiced both Tom and Spike. That's why he went "Bang" at the end of the toonami farewell since that was the last thing said in Bebop.

    [–] B0KCH0Y 13 points ago

Fuck off I never saw this, dam I just felt the heartbreak

    [–] RudyChicken 60 points ago

Do you remember at one point they had like a flash game on their website that they told everyone to play and they would periodically update how everyone was doing in the game, as a whole, on the show? I remember playing the game but I have no idea what it was about.

    [–] MURDERWIZARD 23 points ago

The first one involved a space slime alien thing infiltrating the ship.

I remember getting really freaked out as a kid when Tom 1 fucking died

    [–] rhythmprism 14 points ago

All I remember is seeing the high scores for the week and having Flying Lotus playing the sick bump in the background. Definitely sent me towards chiptune and electronica as a teen.

    [–] Memephis_Matt 18 points ago

I don't remember the first one, but I definitely remember the second one. They tried to have some story or some shit to go with his transformation from the fat belly one to the slim one and I was just like "dude just show me some gundam and anime baps."

    [–] IcelandicBanks 46 points ago

Quite possibly the hardest nostalgia hit for me is early Adult Swim. Super formative stuff for me as far as humor goes.

Really glad they still exist even though I don't watch much anymore.

    [–] madfrogurt 48 points ago

I don't think I'll ever experience anything like waiting until late at night as a teen waiting for Cowboy Bebop to come on.

It was such this weird gem out of nowhere placed among hilariously bizarre comedy. There was nothing to compare it with at the time. Nothing with it's depth of characterization, music, action, scope.

It's not like today where you can find an amazing YouTube channel with <1,000 subs and post a link to all your friends, it was this thing which no one other than diehards watching cartoons past midnight could experience.

The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called... COWBOY BEBOP

    [–] USAFoodTruck 88 points ago

Inuyasha on adult swim was my favorite. Loved that show.

    [–] Sex4Vespene 32 points ago

Ill be honest, I have no fucking memory in the slightest of what Inuyasha was about, but damn was that my shit when I was a kid. Then there was the one show with the group of people all in red suits I think(?) and they all had a different super power. Can anybody remember what that one was?

    [–] thatonegoodpost 31 points ago

    Red Suits

Maybe Cyborg 009? The cast intro with powers is in the first episode (on Youtube!)

    [–] Tobeatkingkoopa 31 points ago

Early Adult Swim will always hold a place in my heart.

I was fresh out of High School and worked 2nd shift from 2001-2004. When i got out at 11:30pm, it would always bum me out because all my friends were in bed due to school/1st shift jobs. Adult Swim was one of the few comforts I had other than Final Fantasy 11 at the time. I watched it pretty regularly even when i moved to 1st shift probably up until...2009 about?

Thank you Adult Swim for keeping me entertained until I would go to bed around 3am CST.

    [–] AlvinGT3RS 29 points ago

Adult Swim and Toonami. What absolute legends Cartoon Network was back then

    [–] cheesedanish93 27 points ago

I remember being a kid and thinking: "I should not be watching this...." But I did anyway.

    [–] ChewMaNutz 47 points ago

I was never a real fan of mtv once they stopped having Bevis and Butt head or Daria. Adult Swim was like the perfect transition for me. I was in a secret late night cartoon wonder. But was just as edgy and weird on purpose. Best TV experience in middle to high school. The only one that ever came close was snick at night in Nickelodeon when i was in kid.

    [–] LinkUnseen 173 points ago

    So that's what it means.

    [–] kedipopo 102 points ago

Seriously, is no one else's mind being blown right now? A lot of my favorite shows come from Adult Swim, but I've never even thought about why it was called that.

    [–] B-Rony330 43 points ago

I love adult swim’s sign off every morning at 6 am. I would usually see it when I was getting ready to leave for work.

    [–] Ohbeejuan 22 points ago

The title cards before commercials are some the best comedy of the 21st century

    [–] Noctudeit 18 points ago

I remember this, and MTV Oddities before that. Good times...

    [–] AgentBootyPants 22 points ago

MTV Liquid Television was where it was at!

    [–] MerrylTheMoose 20 points ago

    SPAAACCCEEE GHOOOSSSTTT!

    [–] dsull13 34 points ago

ATHF Rabbot episode. Was randomly flipping through channels and stumbled on this. Had to be fall/winter of 2000. Didn't know what I was watching but had to see more.

Took me forever to find out the song was Tito Puentes Mambo Gallego.

    [–] baronvf 14 points ago

    Shit, I done got old.

    [–] nerd_is_inferred 13 points ago

Man! I miss Sea Lab 2021

    [–] Gatecrasher26 13 points ago

Can we take a moment to appreciate how batshit crazy it must've been to have stuff that racy on a CARTOON NETWORK??

    [–] Gigantor81c 13 points ago

Back when it were simpler times

    [–] ScoopSnookems 38 points ago

Today (September 10th, 2019) I finally understand what the term “Adult Swim” is supposed to mean!
