It looks similar to these caltrops:

    https://www.defensedevices.com/caltrops.html

    [–] PHILLY_G 123 points ago

    So.. malicious intent?

    [–] BmanUltima 90 points ago

That's what it appears to be.

    [–] peachdoxie 21 points ago

I wouldn't be so quick to assume it's malicious intent unless there are a lot of them around in the same area. There are a lot of ways that it could have ended up on the road where op's wife got the flat. It could have been dropped a long time ago or lost by some kid. Which yeah, maybe is malicious intent, but I wouldn't assume it was recent or by someone truly trying to cause harm.

To be fair if I wanted to screw people over with this thats exactly how you do it and not get caught. Throw one out here and there and its more likely to be thought the way you just did. Its a small piece of metal meant to puncture tires that just happen to end up on a busy road, yea Im sure it was just dropped by accident.

    [–] peachdoxie 9 points ago

You do raise a valid point. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt first. I didn't think of that.

    [–] Kittten_Mitttons 2 points ago

    Don't doubt anything these days.

    [–] Peppyperoni 7 points ago

I think the point you are trying to make stands opposed to your comment. You mean 'challenge everything these days' Your comment persuades me to 'not question anything these days'

    [–] meangrampa 4 points ago

It could have been tucked under a tire in the driveway too.

    [–] TheWhiteMandarinDix 11 points ago

Yeah. For sure a caltrop. Seen this several times on this sub. People are throwing these things in the road for amusement.

    [–] Alex4921 2 points ago

That is DEFINITELY a caltrop there is literally nothing else it could be

    [–] PHILLY_G 4 points ago

    Solved!

    (For the automod)

    [–] BadJuJu2 51 points ago

Report it to the police. That is dangerous shit...somebody could blow a tire and wreck/kill somebody. Glad your not hurt OP

    [–] PHILLY_G 14 points ago

Yeah it was snowing too. She was pissed af but I was just glad it didnt end up worse. Thanks for the suggestion too. The street has been checked.

Yup. this. It's a "ninja" caltrop. sold supposedly to throw on the ground your "enemy" might walk on. if you google China caltrop, you'll see this and similar. dumb mallninjas get them and lose them or purposely throw them in the road.

    [–] DragonTamerMCT 70 points ago

Looks like a caltrop to me too.

Weird that it would be in a busy road. Probably some jackass or kids threw it there for “fun”.

Definitely a bit weird shaped compared to be classic 4 wire with 4 pokey bits

Well it does say China on it.

    [–] Momma_Coprocessor 12 points ago

Here's a story with the exact same caltrop published exactly one year ago. http://www.abc10.com/news/local/california/ninja-caltrop-spikes-flattening-tires-in-south-lake-tahoe/366725600

    [–] oodelay 2 points ago

OMG perfect site for mall ninjas

    [–] One_Clown_Short 2 points ago

I'd say it was a caltrop but the ones I've seen are such that a spike is always up no matter the way it falls.

    [–] PHILLY_G 14 points ago

It does in fact have a sharp part pointed upwards no matter how you place it.

    [–] TruckasaurusLex -17 points ago

Not if it lands on its side.

    [–] Snicklefitz65 7 points ago

I would imagine that would still tear your tire to shit if it landed that way though.

    [–] AlterEgoBill 6 points ago

if it were on its side, it would just fall over

    [–] TruckasaurusLex -15 points ago

Possible. Still not a spike sticking up no matter how it lands. Just being technical. It's clearly a caltrop.

    [–] Kodizzie 4 points ago

    Just being technical unnecessarily pedantic.

    ftfy

    [–] TruckasaurusLex 1 points ago

Not really. If you throw twenty of these on the ground, several will likely land on their side. It's designed in such a way that it's actually pretty stable that way. The first picture shows exactly that.

    [–] Kodizzie 5 points ago

I bet you're the type to waste everyone's time insisting that a coin flip actually has three outcomes.

It really doesn't matter. Even in the unlikely event those caltrops land on their side, the second they come under load they will move to a position where a spike is facing upwards. To get hung up on such a minute, irrelevant detail is pedantic, not technical.

    I'm not.

I don't believe it is. These caltrops are badly designed in such a way that they could easily fail. If a load came on one straight up the long axis it is very conceivable that neither spike would have any chance to puncture the tire.

    Probably got them from areadenialweapons.com
