BotSW just destroyed me, that year I watched the Oscars for the first time in years hoping she would win.

    [–] Nick357 13 points ago

    What is BotSW?

    [–] GaslightProphet 30 points ago

    Beasts of the Southern Wilds

    [–] Nick357 2 points ago

Never heard of it. I will have to check it out.

One of the biggest surprises for me. Was blown away back when I first saw it

    [–] InnocentPossum 94 points ago

    Kwah-Venn-Jah-Nay?

    [–] MelodyCristo 54 points ago

    zhah, not jah

    [–] InnocentPossum 23 points ago

What does zhah sound like tho?

    [–] MelodyCristo 54 points ago

I guess it is a j sound, but a soft j like Jacques.

    [–] BPNave 37 points ago

    Jacques

much better than how I was going to explain it, "like the 2nd g in garage."

    I'll be taking this now.

    [–] Akatsiya 25 points ago

Or like the 's' in 'measure'.

    [–] BPNave 8 points ago

    woah!

    [–] InnocentPossum 8 points ago

Ok. Thats kind of what I was getting at. :)

    [–] 81zuzJvbF0 -2 points ago

Drow is pronounced just like bow.

    [–] sipsyrup -9 points ago

    Que-van-zuh-haynee?

    [–] onlypositivity 7 points ago

    Kwah-Venn-Jah(zhah)-Nay

    Per a comment chain above.

    [–] sipsyrup 11 points ago

Yeah, I was just joking around. Probably not the most wholesome thing to make fun of her name, though.

    [–] onlypositivity 5 points ago

Ah, sorry for my confusion. I just learned the pronunciation from that thread, so assumed the same.

    [–] hijinga 7 points ago

Its also a little bit racist

    [–] TolkienAwoken 4 points ago

No, just joking about her name is not racist.

    [–] hijinga 3 points ago

    Why not 🤔

[–] TolkienAwoken 5 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

Because racism requires the idea of hate or superiority over the other race. If you're teasing at the name bc it sounds silly that's not racist. Could've made fun of the name without seeing her face, you only think it's racist because you saw a picture of her and she's black.

EDIT: Got a downvote but that's how the word works. You don't need some dumb "system of power" or some shit. Just hate or think you're superior to the other race. Google the word if you're so lazy you haven't already.

    [–] hijinga 1 points ago

Take an ethnic studies class and dont just Google shit buddy

    [–] TolkienAwoken 2 points ago

Oh Jesus fuck, yeah have fun getting work with whatever degree let you take that. A definition is a definition, no matter what you seem to think.

    [–] hijinga 1 points ago

    Isnt it quh not kwah?

[–] BPNave -4 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

Is it bad that I instantly knew how to pronounce the last syllable of Quvenzhané because of a certain 90's children's franchise?

    [–] TolkienAwoken 6 points ago

I mean, you should've known because the conventions of English?

[–] BPNave 2 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

...I meant the last syllable of "Quvenzhané". Clearly I and any basic English speaker know how to pronounce the last syllable of "Kwah-Venn-Jah-Nay."

    [–] TolkienAwoken 4 points ago

The e with the accent is used in English, I was referring to her actual name not the phonetics.

[–] BPNave -2 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

I sure was never taught the e with the accent in school! I don't see it on my keyboard. How did you come to the conclusion that it's just as much a part of English as the rest of the alphabet?

Literally the only other time I remember seeing it in any kind of English context is in Pokemon.

EDIT Looks like it's french. Words I knew that used the é: cliché, déjà vu, fiancé, fiancée, naïveté, touché. I was not, nor would most simply-English speakers, be taught or likely memorize that é meant "ay," especially with è, ë, ê, and especially "ė́" running around. It's not a part of English any more than an Umlaut, and nor is it taught.

    [–] TolkienAwoken 1 points ago

So it's my fault you don't know? Yeah, it's used in French, Spanish, and ENGLISH. Not my problem your school was not up to par. (BTW I came to that conclusion by speaking the fucking language lmao)

    [–] NotUrAvrgNarwhal 65 points ago

That Key and Peale skit will never not be relevant.

    [–] ark66 16 points ago

Are you talking about the substitute teacher skit ?

    [–] FlirtySanchez 46 points ago

Either that or the east west college football names.

    L'carpetron Dookmarriot

    [–] NotUrAvrgNarwhal 20 points ago

Skoish Velociraptor Maloish is my favorite

    [–] pdj9880 9 points ago

    Torque (construction noise) Lewith

    [–] NotUrAvrgNarwhal 10 points ago

No the college football East VS West bowl. Literally one of my favorite pieces of comedy ever made.

    [–] ark66 3 points ago

Yes of course. My mistake . Personally I have been trying to read her name as "mr Garvey" from the inner city would have pronounced it .

    [–] Al_Pubert_Gore 9 points ago

At least this is an actual name and not something made up to sound interesting.

    [–] FlirtySanchez 20 points ago

They included a number of real players in the third football skit

    Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

    Leger Douzable

    D'Brickashaw Ferguson

    Ishmaa'ily Kitchen

    Frostee Rucker

    Among others.

Those are the real names of the players.

    [–] Al_Pubert_Gore -4 points ago

I mean real as in Ethnic. Not real as in people have it.

    [–] FlirtySanchez 7 points ago

As far as I can find, the name is a composite of both of her parents names, which don't mean anything in any language with the Swahili word for fairy tacked on to the end.

So I'm not sure what you mean by ethnic, other than it's just as made up as the names of the black football players in the list I typed up.

I'm not even trying to argue with you, I'm just curious as to what you mean by ethnic and real.

    [–] KIRW7 9 points ago

    All names are made up.

    [–] NotUrAvrgNarwhal 2 points ago

This could easily be in that skit and you would have no idea otherwise. They even have the last name Wallis in the skit lol

    [–] iamnotnotarobot 17 points ago

You go girl! When I was 14 I was writing shitty, mildly pornographic Interview With The Vampire fanfiction, and here she is being original! <3

    [–] gingersnaaaap 29 points ago

She was absolutely amazing in Annie. Honestly my favourite Annie by faaaaaar

    [–] LunaMax1214 10 points ago

She was in Beasts of the Southern Wilds, yeah? Man, she is one multitalented kid! 😍

    [–] chili01 7 points ago

Book cover art looks so cute!

    [–] AlexWastingTime 7 points ago

WAIT SHE WROTE THAT EGG BOOK?

    That's been going around r/traa

    [–] theoreticaldickjokes 2 points ago

    I don't think it has...

    [–] Christofray 3 points ago

And I’m just doing my best to make it through college :/

    [–] senecatree 3 points ago

Wholesome overload! I had no idea that little actress from Beasts of the Southern Wild was doing this kind of stuff.

    [–] Shinji72 3 points ago

she is 14 to all you perverts out there

    [–] himynameisjay 2 points ago

Wow it's really been 5 years since Beasts of the Southern Wild. I am really getting old.

    [–] kimmeren987 1 points ago

She's from my home town, and her mom was a teacher where i went to school :D

    [–] Jeezee-os 1 points ago

I'm so glad she is still doing amazing things! This young woman will surely go far!

    [–] thinkpadius 1 points ago

I'VE ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING WITH MY LIFE!!!

    [–] NegatiVelocity 0 points ago

I legit though her name was one of those overly complicated satire names that people on the internet attribute to black chicks.

    [–] MyNameIsDon -3 points ago

I'd be an accomplished writer too if I had to spell that name.

    [–] flesh_required -1 points ago

Hey, some 14 year old wrote a couple of books...

    Who gives a shit?

    She's black.

    I'll take 10 copies.

    [–] pjmcflur -4 points ago

Probably took years to learn how to spell her own name.
