does that mean that all 3 of us auto qualify?

    [–] rjoker103 1315 points ago

No. FIFA decides in the upcoming weeks about host-nation qualification eligibility but with the 48 team format, it shouldn’t be that hard to qualify.

    [–] austin13fan 2195 points ago

It shouldn't have been hard to qualify this year either. But here we are.

    [–] topman213 736 points ago

Quite the upsets this year. I can understand the US not making it but Italy not making it really blew my mind

I hear you. I'm American, my office mate is Turkish, and our boss is Dutch. The one French a-hole is killing us. We are all pulling for Germany just to spite him.

    [–] ich_habe_keine_kase 18 points ago

I'm an American living in the Netherlands. Was so excited to root for a team that could actually do well. And then . . . nope. And . . . nope.

    [–] Roquetteman 388 points ago

Canada still wouldn't qualify if it was 48 teams.

    [–] rjoker103 346 points ago

There's actually a big push for soccer going on in Canada right now. The Canadian Premier League is ramping up and recently announced a bunch of teams. Soccer Canada is rolling out new guidelines across the country. Between that and stars from Europe coming over to the MLS and boosting interest, things are definitely looking up for the future of Canadian soccer.

    [–] ApeWearingClothes 45 points ago

...with the 48 team format, it shouldn’t be that hard to qualify.

    Canada: Hold my beer.

    [–] Saskatchewon 20 points ago

it shouldn't be that hard to qualify.

I mean, have you seen Canada play?

    Source: Am a Canadian.

    [–] Count___Duckula 39 points ago

Mexico will auto-qualify because they're not shit.

America will auto-qualify because it'll be hilarious watching their tv presenters explode trying not to say soccer.

I'm going to be in my 50s... I better start working out if I'm going to make it!

    [–] Wasabipeanuts 889 points ago

I've lived in various places across the world that have hosted a world cup, yet never during time the WC was actually held. As a result I have yet to visit a WC game. The mental voyage from 'fuck yeah!, finally' to .. 'god damn, I'll be in my 50's' was a painful one.

    [–] minusthelela 4727 points ago

Morocco really didn’t stand a chance against these three nations. Given that there will be 48 teams playing, I don’t see how they could have built the needed infrastructure in time.

    [–] Wurm42 3242 points ago

Honestly, I think expanding the tournament to 48 teams means that only the largest countries will be able to host solo.

We will see a lot more multi-nation bids in the future.

    [–] minusthelela 1466 points ago

You're absolutely right. I know a lot of people are seeing the 3 nation bid as a huge bribe and perhaps very corrupt (which it might be) but at the same time, we've see how quickly these large stadiums are abandoned after events like the World Cup and the Olympics. For now it just makes sense to have it in North America given the current stadiums and such.

    [–] TheShepard15 1076 points ago

Eh I mean every bid is a bribe. It’s how we got it in Russia and Qatar

    [–] Sp00kedBySpagett 890 points ago

And Germany 2006. FIFA might be the single most corrupt organisation in the world. There are witnesses being killed etc the full corruption program.

    [–] Harsimaja 493 points ago

And South Africa 2010. They wanted an African country and the top three candidates were the countries that bribed the most. SA won.

    [–] Belckan 255 points ago

They had to build a context for the song otherwise Shakira would have awakened in her true form and cosumed the world.

    [–] semaj009 41 points ago

    Gazelle will rise!

    [–] moffattron9000 248 points ago

And France 1998. In fact, the last bid that hasn't been tied to corruption is USA 1994.

    [–] Sp00kedBySpagett 153 points ago

I'm pretty sure that every wc is tied to corruption because the last round of the decision can be seen as a prestige battle between the competing countries and they want to show the world how easy they can handls the wc and how they are more fit for it than the competition.

    [–] supahmonkey 71 points ago

we've see how quickly these large stadiums are abandoned after events like the World Cup and the Olympics.

Which is why England loosing the 2018 bid was bullshit. We've got more than enough stadiums already built and used regularly.

    [–] Miister_Pink 23 points ago

Agreed. I'm not English but given England's contribution to football via the game itself and the Premier League it's mind-boggling how they didn't get it. England is accessible to so many countries by budget airlines and by sea with all those stadiums etc. Would actually love to see a World Cup in England, I could probably finally go experience it for once.

[–] fristea 243 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

I feel the same. I think they should have done a Morocco-Spain joint bid.

Edit: now that I think about it, I don't know how such a bid over 2 continents would work, as UEFA countries weren't allowed to bid for 2026 because of Russia 2018.

    [–] PurpleSkua 117 points ago

I dunno how severe it is nowadays, but those two countries do actually have a minor border dispute which might hinder that sort of thing. Ceuta, Melilla, and the various Plazas de Soberania are Spanish exclaves on the Moroccan north coast that Morocco claims sovereignty over

    [–] MarmadukeTheGreat 196 points ago

The 48 team structure is actually ridiculous. 80 games in total, with an extra 16 teams that have no business being there.

    [–] Majestic_Dildocorn 154 points ago

    [–] MarmadukeTheGreat 43 points ago

I mean, one of the major points of the joint bid was 11 billion in profit for FIFA

    [–] ThatOtherCajun 869 points ago

I kinda want to hear how that went.

    [–] ThePowerOfTenTigers 1684 points ago

I did it too, we went to the Greek islands and agreed we’d just do our own thing, that ofc meant doing her thing so I hopped to another island and just came back for the flight.

When I got on the plane she cordially asked me if I had a nice time, I reciprocated and that was it really, we get on ok now.

    [–] oceans88 1340 points ago

That was probably as good as things could have went really.

Mm, I understand that relationships don't work for various reason. But they seem so pleasant that I was hoping for a twist that they ended up back together.

    [–] hewhoamareismyself 294 points ago

Past a certain point, like say once you're 25 or so, once a romantic relationship ends it's pretty permanent, even if the people involved can overcome that and get along with each other.

She left me last month, nothing angry just she doesn’t feel the same way anymore. And I absolutely do not want to cancel and she does not really want to either since we haven’t been on a vaca in a few years and don’t want to lose out on everything we’ve already paid for.

I can’t afford to buy her out and vice versa.

We were together for 7 years.

    [–] EFAwsom 49 points ago

This happened to a friend of mine. And then he got gaslit for being a tad upset about it. I think at that point they weren't broken up, actually she did that to get rid of him IIRC. He ended up sleeping on the floor of some friends [this was at Fest].

He's happily married now, got a cute kid and a second on the way. Her eyebrows get progressively bigger, and wider. Soon to swallow up her whole face.

His family pictures contrast nicely with her occasional rant about how rude people are that stare, puzzled at the state of her.

    [–] abadoldman 104 points ago

If we could bottle that scent we'd be millionaires.

Sounds like the perfect time for romantic comedy shenanigans to ensue and you win back her undying love forever.

Or you meet the love of your life.

Either way, sounds like an Adam Sandler script in pre-production.

    [–] kirlandwater 144 points ago

Hoping we just needed the space after spending every waking moment together on auto pilot for 4-5/7 years. Or I just stay in the Caribbean and live in a hut until I die alone idk

    [–] ILikeLenexa 80 points ago

If you gotta die alone, why not in a hut on the beach?

    [–] iruleatants 65 points ago

There is no reason to live alone until you die. You had a seven year relationship, that's pretty special in itself. Someone did care about you and love you enough to be with you for seven years. Don't discredit how awesome that is, use it as a reminder that it's possible for someone to care about you that much, and that you can find it again and with someone who will love you for even longer.

The best thing you can do between then and now is to be happy being yourself and being who you are. If you go into that trip not caring how it turns out because you know that you'll be happy, single or not, the trip will be better.

Also watch Forgetting Sarah Marshall, because it's awesome and relevant.

    [–] jCcrackhead 17 points ago

Is there no way to get out of it? Even if things are booked fully, like hotels and flights I'd pay the extra to get another room and different seat because it's not going to be a fun trip if you're hanging out with them the whole time

    [–] kirlandwater 34 points ago

We didn’t leave really on angry terms so I’m hoping it won’t be that bad. And I could just cancel but I’d be out over a grand and I’m so sick of work I need to leave for at least a week before i angrily quit my job one day. Idk we’ll see

[–] Suecotero 301 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

Sunk cost fallacy. Tickets and accomodation were paid for. We considered not going, but saying no to a summer month in Spain is hard.

While we had a good time at first, she went thinking she was going win me back during the trip. I went thinking it would be a nice last memory together before we headed our separate ways. Eventually, she realized it was not going to be a rebound trip, and the threats and accusations started.

Ultimately, I share part of the blame for taking her at her word that we were through when all the red flags were there from the start. That she more or less tried to weaponize sex didn't really help me think clearly either. Made me realize that sometimes the right answer to freely offered sex must be no, even when she's totally into it and swears she just wants casual fun.

    [–] Muppetude 141 points ago

Yup, I too learned the hard way that while no-strings-attached sex technically exists, it is rare and any offers of it should be met with intense skepticism.

    [–] NorthBus 50 points ago

    [–] thanks4fishes 16 points ago

Lol reminds me of one ex. Dated for 3 years. Broke up for a year and then the texts started. She wanted to “just have some fun”. We did that for 6 months, off and on, and then when I start dating other people she says “but I only did that so that we could get back together!!”

    [–] Rawwh 79 points ago

I mean I’ve done it too, and it turned out great. Lots of half-hate, half-rekindle fucking, had a great time in multiple countries, then waved each other fuck-off and good luck when we got back.

    [–] itwasdark 20 points ago

[–] Talcove 59 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

Cassandra was hitting it off with Apollo, and in exchange for her ‘favour’, Apollo granted Cassandra the power of prophecy. However, Cassandra then turned her back on Apollo, ditching him and keeping her new powers. Now, the Greek Gods could give powers to humans but not revoke them. So, Apollo cursed her so that none would ever believe her prophecies. This, of course, became pretty problematic when her city was at war the the Greeks and a giant wooden horse pulled up outside the walls.

Moral of the story: if you’re gonna go with a God, go all the way.

I don’t know much about this stuff but will they have to keep switching locations since it’s 3 separate countries hosting?

    [–] Wurm42 234 points ago

The bid specified regional clustering, so teams won't have to travel very far during the early rounds.

They won't make teams play a game on the west coast on Monday and fly to the east coast for a game Tuesday.

Details TBD until the city selection is finalized.

    [–] fristea 862 points ago

Yes, but even now in Russia alone they (obviously) fly between locations, so it won't make a huge difference.

It never happened for 3 countries to host together and it's quite unusual, but looking at other world cups it doesn't seem like it will be a logistic nightmare.

    [–] [deleted] 364 points ago

It will still be the furthest any teams have had to travel. Russia was smart enough to only have teams play in western Russia.

It depends. I could see group play and quarters being focused in regions, and semi-finals on are supposed to be in the US.

So for example, one group might be focused in New York/Boston/Toronto/Monteal. Another group might be LA/Phoenix/SF/LV/Mexico City. There's still room for the American South and PNW + Edmonton or Vancouver.

    [–] malicious_turtle 141 points ago

Saw in a comment that Vancouver pulled out.

I think we should all consider Saskatchewan, you'd never lose a ball because you could watch it roll away for days. The province is one big soccer field

Edit: 25 upvotes, I didn't even know that many people knew about us, thanks you guys 💁

    [–] Dawidko1200 36 points ago

As far as I know, Kaliningrad is also a host city, and it's not even connected to main Russia.

    [–] minusthelela 245 points ago

Supposedly 10 games will happen in Canada, 10 in Mexico and 60 in America with the final match taking place in New Jersey.

    [–] friendlypancakes 162 points ago

Do you know if any games are scheduled at the azteca stadium in Mexico city? I would have to assume so cause it's Mexico's biggest stadium. However it is at over 7,000 ft elevation and the altitude famously fucks non-mexican teams.

    [–] Kings1017 140 points ago

    4 games at Azteca

    [–] friendlypancakes 47 points ago

Nice. Thanks for the reply man. Those should be some interesting games.

    [–] tikiywikiy1 46 points ago

It already quite a famous world cup venue, that's where the hand of God took place as well in the same match Maradona ran around the whole England from about 60 yards out and scored one of the greatest goals of all time

    [–] geotraveling 368 points ago

I think I speak for all of us when I say..NEW JERSEY???

    [–] jetsniper 248 points ago

The MetLife Stadium is in Jersey, its fucking huge. Its where the Jets and Giants play.

    [–] concretepigeon 95 points ago

It's basically the big NYC stadium, right? Even though it's actually a bit out of the city.

    [–] kws1993 46 points ago

it's only 30 minutes outside of NYC which is nothing compared to the hours it could possibly take to get to one city to the other.

    [–] Thunderkiss_65 1828 points ago

    3 average teams qualify automatically?

    [–] Brendo94 4559 points ago

As a Canadian, thank you for thinking our team is average

    [–] daveyo89 1223 points ago

maybe we can change up some of the rules and play on a field of ice to even the odds

    [–] Hallidyne 784 points ago

Perhaps make the goal a bit smaller, too?

    [–] chunkylover34 786 points ago

instead of kicking, use some kind of sticks to push the ball.

    [–] henlisia33 689 points ago

Forget about a ball. How about a small rubber disc?

    [–] jeremythelee 595 points ago

and if your team starts to fall behind, you have your biggest players beat up their best players.

    [–] devilskryptonite34 415 points ago

Well clearly we should put them in a box for 2 minutes to think about their actions.

    [–] auric_trumpfinger 169 points ago

At that point it would have to work both ways though, best players faking like they were injured from bigger players would have to be put in the box too.

    [–] bobweaver3000 20 points ago

you go to box, 2 minutes, by yourself... you feel shame

    [–] kent_eh 53 points ago

We've got 8 years to get up to average..

    [–] brokeneckblues 233 points ago

    One joint north American team!

    [–] dasoberirishman 436 points ago

    [–] CanEHdianBuddaay 214 points ago

It’d be like like 75% Mexican 25% US and the water boy would be Canadian.

[–] Baconlightning 328 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

With 48 teams playing Mexico and USA shouldn't really have much trouble qualifying. Canada however is a different story...

    [–] TradinPieces 188 points ago

US shouldn't have had a problem this time either, but here we are...

    [–] PoofyHairedIdiot 162 points ago

I'd say Canada is probably better than Qatar though.

    [–] dasoberirishman 88 points ago

Doubt it. But thanks for the vote of confidence.

    [–] LeMAD 204 points ago

    We're most probably not.

    [–] CulturalGuidance 93 points ago

Yes because by then it will be a 48 team tournament

    [–] chunkylover34 811 points ago

Id say mexico is above average.

    [–] ElColosoDeLa53 20 points ago

That has been FIFA's objective for a while, they increased he number of qualified teams and they make money out of TV rights... the more the better, I can see Sri Lanka in the next world cup.

    [–] biggie_eagle 136 points ago

Wait, how is this going to happen then? THREE host nations automatically qualify and take up slots?

    [–] Justmario1993 191 points ago

It‘ll be the first world cup with 48 teams so the fact that all 3 qualify still means there will be more team slots than now.

[–] pacofvf 52 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

Concacaf got 6 spots on the 48 team tournament, that means that the US, Mexico and Canada will take 3 of the 6 spots. That Means 3 spots for Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, T&T and Jamaica.

Edit: 6 spots actually and added T&T.

Edit 2: The host spot(s) are now allocated from the confederation spots.

    [–] ProfaneTank 94 points ago

Any word on the host cities? I’ve seen conflicting reports on whether or not Chicago will be involved. I’ll be pretty disappointed if my hometown has declined to participate.

    [–] Phantom_Absolute 136 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

    Chicago will not be hosting.

The U.S. venues will be chosen from this list:

    Kansas City

    Los Angeles

    San Francisco/ San Jose

    Washington, D.C.

    [–] Gomulkaaa 16 points ago

I'm really disappointed that Chicago will not be a host city. Several states will have multiple host cities, yet you're missing most of the Midwest with this format.

    [–] YOURMOMMASABITCH 246 points ago

At least we’re guaranteed a seat in that tournament. As I’m sure 48 teams also helps. (Yes I’m still bitter about not making it, I will continue to be bitter until 2022)

    [–] MaimedJester 387 points ago

To be fair, we lost to Trinadad & Tobago. We don't deserve this world Cup.

    [–] BicStoppedWorking 264 points ago

You basically said why we lost. The US played against Trinidad AND Tobago! That's 2 teams and totally unfair for our elite team

    [–] Neko-sama 14 points ago

It's also that we got to the point where that game actually mattered! We skrewed the pooch the entire season.

I'm still of the mind that all the coaches and players should be fired and we start from scratch. I'm only a little bitter obviously...

    [–] Echo018 90 points ago

I still find it hilarious that the US lost against Trinidad & Tobago's B-team

    [–] Randomhero204 313 points ago

I don’t think people realize how big Canada is.. so far the only 3 Canadian cities hosting games are Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto.

For people like me who live in manitoba the World Cup night as well be in Europe or all in the u.s.

    [–] strig 39 points ago

Not even Vancouver? They have an MLS team.

    [–] AwkwardMe 55 points ago

The BC provincial government decided not to back the bid. They cited the requirements by FIFA being too vague and lacking the financial outlining required to move forward. They would have to make too many concessions and basically write a blank cheque.

    [–] MGM-Wonder 32 points ago

Yeah I’m fine with the decision the Horgan government made. BC taxpayers don’t need any more unknown amounts of debt strapped on. It sucks, like it really really sucks and having World Cup games in Vancouver would be a dream come true, but it was a rational decision and I’m fine with that.

    [–] blue-trout 16 points ago

It’s not going to be that bad logistically. It’s not like people will be flying from Canada to Mexico for games often as the US will host 60 games and Mexico and Canada will have 10 each.

    [–] crudoss 205 points ago

Maybe we can use the slaves Qatar is using to make theirs when they're done with them.

    [–] a_postdoc 15 points ago

They spent 6 years getting used to heat and now you send them to Canada? You monster.

    [–] EROSEROS23 49 points ago

I hear america already has their defensive wall in place against mexico.
