To be fair some posts are probably fake as shit.

[–] ELI5: How do websites know when you are using an adblocker? 0x3639 1 points ago in explainlikeimfive

They say it publicly. Disable adblock and on the front page it should say "by using this site you agree to mine XMR" or something like that "enable adblock to disable".

    Good point.
They don't need donations from us is what I'm getting at (dunno about the first poster in the thread). They've got enough donations from other corps and a grant from a government at one stage iirc.

Substantial donations from the wealthy include one made by the Omidyar Network, which gave $2.5m and won a seat on the board; the Ford Foundation ($3m); the Stanton Foundation ($3.6m); and the Sloan Foundation ($3m). Then there's Google ($2m) and the Brin-Wojciki Foundation ($500,000). Only a few of these are highlighted.

These are previous ones, and you can bet that they're still getting donation of the same or similar amounts from companies to this day.

Why all the Windows hate? Windows 7 was the last good Windows.

Once upon a time, Wikimedia listed every donation, but now only a few of the largest are made public.

Today, the funding is organised by a non-profit corporation, the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), and the growth in funding has been dramatic. In 2006, the foundation had just three employees, and operated on a budget of $3m. It was amateurish, too. In 2007 evaluators at Charity Navigator gave WMF just one star (out a possible five) for efficiency (a fact deleted from WMF's Wikipedia page). The Wikimedia Foundation hired a convicted felon as its chief operating officer to look after its books while on she was on parole. The executive's convictions included cheque fraud and unlawfully wounding her boyfriend with a gunshot to the chest.
Today the foundation is a very different beast. It's cash-rich - with a headcount of 119, 53 per cent higher than 2010/11 - and raised almost $35m in the last donations appeal. The architect of the latest highly aggressive funding drive is Sue Gardner, executive director of the WMF.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2015/12/02/wikipedia-has-a-ton-of-money-so-why-is-it-begging-you-to-donate-yours

In the fiscal year that ended last June, WMF reported net assets in excess of $77 million — about one and a half times the amount it actually takes to fund the site for a year. On Dec. 3, 2014 — the single biggest day of last year’s fundraising campaign — the foundation pocketed enough money to power Wikipedia’s servers for 66 straight weeks.

    https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/wikipedia-millions-bank-beg/

What Wales says can create the picture that internet hosting is the major cost. But the Wikimedia foundation spends only about 6% ($2 million) on it. You know what gets the same amount of money? Travel and conferences.

“There is also a huge bucket for ‘other operating expenses’ totaling nearly $12.5 million — some of which certainly pays for expensive downtown office space in San Francisco,”

Edit: added quotes for the lazy

Note: I don't hate Wikipedia. Quite frankly I love it. But, they don't need our donations to stay afloat.

[–] Muslim man tears the book "The Satanic Verses" off a journalist who is investigating the attitude towards the 30 year old fatwa and book release anniversary 0x3639 1 points ago in PublicFreakout

He's being a moron is what he's doing.

Like does this video not seem just so fucking absurd to anyone? Forget that he's a Muslim - this dudes is just fucking insane. He goes out of his way to burn it. You can see some other Muslims giving their opinions calmly in other parts of the video.

My point is don't judge all Muslims (or religions/cultures) in general just from the acts of one (or a couple) morons.

Seriously. You could reasonably expect that anyone, when you spit in their face will fight back.
So of course an officer would put you to the ground.

That's not true at all. Sure, some people from there are avid supporters of de-googling and are fucking Nazis.

But it's really stupid to say <<they>> created it (they for sure didn't) and that's all it stands for now. Google is sketchy regardless of their political stance.

[–] oops 🤭 0x3639 5 points ago * (lasted edited 4 days ago) in dankchristianmemes

Yeah I suppose, except subs like r/Atheism seem to perpetuate the idea that they're just as rude/condescending as religious zealots.

Like of course a paedophile ring within the church is fucked up. Of course ISIS is bad. of course cults are evil and fucked up. I'm not disagreeing with them there.

But I've seen posts and comments on there with no purpose other that hating on religion and religious people. I've even seen people unironically say shit like religion should be illegal, religion is nothing but bad teachings, etc.

    [–] oops 🤭 0x3639 -3 points ago in dankchristianmemes

I don't know what you're trying to say. Taking the moral high ground is what r/Atheism and ANY religion-related subreddits do.

We're talking about two groups who both want to spread their way of thinking because they believe it's right. (I'm talking about reddit in general here, not all atheists/theists are like this, and not all r/atheism or r/dankchristianmemes posters are like this - reddit just seems to bring out the worst of these types).

    [–] oops 🤭 0x3639 -1 points ago in dankchristianmemes

taking passive aggressive jabs at people with different opinions.

    I mean that's r/Atheism for you
