[–] Trump supporter pointed gun at downtown Minneapolis protesters [VIDEO] Anxa 6 points ago in minnesota

    in the wrong

So what? Since when does assault with a deadly weapon become justified when somebody else is blocking traffic or causing damage to your property? I get and completely sympathize with someone being frightened being in a car with angry people pounding on it.

But owning a firearm doesn't give someone the right to threaten others with death merely for frightening them and causing property damage. It's a major responsibility, and waving a gun around for anything less than imminent mortal peril is wrong. And even the law in "stand your ground" states recognizes this.

That's kind of getting at the separation between author intent and how the media is perceived though. Author intent being paramount presupposes a non-relative world, and that declaring something apolitical and then using an uncontroversial topic that most would consider to not be about anything inherently makes it apolitical.

Asteroids may have a very simple message and one that few if any would find to be political without 'bringing in their own baggage.' But nobody comes into anything without any baggage. The political assumptions of Asteroids are that destroying asteroids is to be desired in the context of the situation, and that the use of a spaceship with little lasers or projectiles is something acceptable enough for the user to be comfortable in control.

Which circles back around to my point - it's not controversial, it's the status quo that asteroids approaching are a problem in space, and one would be hard-pressed to find someone who disagrees. It feels idiotic to call asteroids a political work, which is why it's such a good example. It's political, but not a controversial political stance. Some wacko who thought we should just let things be and let asteroids slam into... whatever the threat is that requires their destruction, would find the game objectionable. And thus political.

All cultural texts are political, when a work appears to be apolitical it's because it fits with a status quo with which the consumer is comfortable.

[–] Megathread: Congress Can Seek President Trump’s Tax Returns, Appeals Court Rules Anxa 1 points ago in politics

You'd get an impeachment by Congress of a sitting judge if that judge ruled that they have to stay in legislative session for the full 2 years and can't go on vacation. 100/100 Senators would vote to impeach if someone took away their recess.

She's also bonkers. She wrote a serious of infamous articles for the Yale Herald declaring that women are at fault if they get date raped. Trump put her in Kavanaugh's old seat.

I tend to agree, but not like a hard agree because we're into such weird waters - Nixon was weird enough, but now we've got a situation where politically, it's hard to imagine a situation in which a Republican isn't facing a primary challenge and basically having to kiss their job goodbye for bucking Trump. With Nixon, it was looking politically unsalvagable when the court ordered Nixon to hand over the tapes.

So I think you're right, but it's not going to because we knew it in advance - it's only going to look inevitable in hindsight.

[–] With Blizzard Receiving So Much Backlash Recently, How Will This Affect Blizzcon? Anxa 7 points ago in Overwatch

Indeed, but it reveals the hypocrisy of their mission statements and the cultural messages of many of their games. And at that point I start to blame developers and artists as well - how can one tell stories about liberation, freedom, and acceptance, when their employer's actions undermine those very core principles?

[–] With Blizzard Receiving So Much Backlash Recently, How Will This Affect Blizzcon? Anxa 2 points ago in Overwatch

Honestly, while I agree with the sentiment on a general level, this is exactly what corporate entities do to insulate themselves from criticism. The fans rarely if ever have access to corner office suits; Kaplan may be the VP of Blizzard, but the board of directors isn't showing up for a Q&A at fanfest.

Always there are the calls to be kind and forgiving to the devs and the public-facing support staff, because it's not their fault. But to a certain extent, it is. They didn't ask for this drama, and maybe they wouldn't even have handled it this way. But their job is to produce content that makes Blizzard money. And Blizzard sticks them out as the public face of the operation.

And Blizzard would love nothing more than for the fans to feel they couldn't voice their discontent, because there isn't a forum for them to voice it directly to the board, and the folks Blizzard sticks out in front of the fans for PR are allegedly immune from reproach or challenge because it's 'not their fault.'

So Blizzard will do what it does at Blizzcon, but ultimately the argument that folks shouldn't 'attack' devs over this is misguided because the devs are the only ones Blizzard is sticking out to deal with the fallout. I feel sympathy for them, and it is their livelihood, but their employer also decided to bow to Beijing's totalitarian demands which is deeply unpopular with the fanbase and antithetical to the company's alleged principles. If the fans are mad and get upset at the devs, I'm not going to shed a tear for folks who Blizzard literally stuck in front of the fans banking on the idea that guilt of attacking the devs would defuse the situation.

[–] Trump threatens to sue Minneapolis for demanding he pay for rally security in advance: Trump's campaign has stiffed at least 10 cities, going back to the 2016 campaign. Minneapolis won't stand for that Anxa 1 points ago in politics

You think the rally is going to be cancelled or something? The private entity responsible for operating the venue already caved. This is no different than Blizzard cowtowning to Beijing, at the end of the day Trump gets away with it because the private companies would rather roll over and force the taxpayers to pay for it rather than stand up to the literal President.

I don't know why folks are writing fanfiction about the venue being closed and Trump having to turn around and go home. He won this dispute the minute the operating company accepted the reservation and didn't ask for up-front payment, normally not done in the industry but definitely something to throw in the contract if the client has a history of defaulting.
