    [–] Marijuana milestone as Mass. issues first recreational pot license - The Boston Globe AssuredlyAThrowAway 4 points ago * (lasted edited 8 hours ago) in boston

    Its not about a matter of life moving on, or a matter of how easy it may be to obtain a card and get medicine for one's self; its about ensuring that the law passed by the voters (and finalized by our representatives in the State Congress) is upheld and respected.

    Delays in the roll out of recreational shops stand only to benefit those monied factions which are operating the current dispensaries. Thus the attempts to delay recreational licensing beyond the July 1st, 2018 deadline are a way of ensuring continued profits for those organizations. That type of behavior is a form of government failure called regulatory capture, and warding off such nefarious influence is the primary task of learned voters and statesmen/stateswomen alike.

    That's decent progress, but we were told July 1st 2018 would be the deadline for rolling out retail stores.

    I can understand the amount of pressure from dispensary interests to slow the roll out (by way of their insidious attempts at regulatory capture), but the voters of this state (and their representatives in the legislature) wrote cogent oversight guidelines to ensure such manipulation would not occur.

    There is simply no excuse for the absence of retail stores on July 1st, 2018.

    [–] House postpones vote on compromise immigration bill AssuredlyAThrowAway 4 points ago in politics

    Not too much to report at the moment, but this could be a signal the bill has failed;

    House Republican leaders are delaying a vote on a compromise immigration bill until Friday, according to a GOP aide.

    The delay comes as leadership has struggled to secure 218 votes for the measure, which is the product of weeks of negotiations between centrists and conservatives.

    DEVELOPING...

    This guy has a chip on his shoulder about this issue

    Sorry, are you referring to your own propensity to follow around those who talk about regulatory capture and dispensary owners stonewalling the permitting process?

    Did you really find reddit only 6 months ago?

    You'll enjoy this expose from 2000 as well- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r8rFNDh9WQ

    Bill Cooper saw through Jones' charade and called him on his behavior in a way that settled all questions imo.

    [–] Publisher of National Enquirer Subpoenaed in Michael Cohen Probe AssuredlyAThrowAway 3 points ago in politics

    Any fixer who leaves themselves (and their client) this open to hard evidence is really quite poorly qualified for the job;

    Federal authorities have subpoenaed the publisher of the National Enquirer for records related to its $150,000 payment to a former Playboy model for the rights to her story alleging an affair with Donald Trump, according to people familiar with the matter.

    The subpoena from Manhattan federal prosecutors requesting information from the publisher, American Media Inc., about its August 2016 payment to Karen McDougal is part of a broader criminal investigation of Mr. Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, they said.

    Investigators are probing any potential efforts by Mr. Cohen to suppress damaging information about Mr. Trump during the presidential campaign, including whether he coordinated with American Media to pay Ms. McDougal and then not publish her account, other people familiar with the matter said.

    God forbid not everyone can be put into an ideological box to suit your condemnation.

    [–] Mulvaney defends family separations, detention center conditions at border AssuredlyAThrowAway 3 points ago in politics

    What a sick, demented man...Mulvaney must not have gotten the memo about Trump's about face;

    White House budget director Mick Mulvaney on Wednesday defended the Trump administration’s controversial “zero-tolerance” immigration policy that has led to the separation of thousands of migrant children from their parents.

    Mulvaney said Wednesday that the Trump administration was merely enforcing laws that apply to U.S. citizens and rejected claims that migrant children have been kept in cages and inhumane conditions.

    “If you cross between points of entry, which is illegal, our zero tolerance is now to charge you with that crime,” Mulvaney said during an interview at a New York financial technology conference.

    “That is the policy change. After that, the law kicks in and the law is that if you get detained and charged with a crime, you don’t get to keep your kids around,” Mulvaney said.

    Well, actually I believe the CCC has provisions (such as priority for equity and economic fairness applicants) wherein licenses are granted on an ABAB basis with other stake holders (such as medical dispensary owners) specifically to address that concern.

    In fact, people like Brownsberger were writing the oversight regulations as to how licensing would occur, and did so specifically with the intent of warding off that kind of regulatory capture (they also stripped the appointment power from the treasurer, and instead allowed 3 different bodies (Governor, AG, and treasurer) to nominate members to the commission).

    Sen. Brownsberger actually did a great write up on the entire regulatory aspect of the bill here- https://willbrownsberger.com/the-marijuana-compromise/

    So yea, there were certainly multiple attempts to monopolize the industry (both during the house re-write of the initial legislation and the subsequent rule making process), but stalwart legislators like Patrica Jehlen and Will Brownserbger were there every step of the way to cut such behavior off at the pass.

    We really do owe them a huge debt of gratitude for their ardent dedication to protecting this Commonwealth from the insidious influence of monied faction within the lawmaking and regulatory process related to cannabis.

    Also, apologies for the in depth rant; I've been "covering" the issue for the subreddit over the past few years I suppose haha.

    [–] The first recreational marijuana license in Mass. could be granted Thursday AssuredlyAThrowAway 3 points ago * (lasted edited 2 days ago) in politics

    Yes but the regulators are also on track to miss the July 1st deadline in the law for the first store to open.

    Kudos to the Cannabis Control Commission for getting the licenses out, but it is not acceptable in the least for them to miss their July 1 deadline for the opening of these stores. The voters in Massachuetts had to tolerate a 2 year delay (caused by a single state Senator, Jason Lewis) in their original deadline (as mandated by the law passed in 2016), and even a day beyond the July 1st deadline for stores to open is too long.

    Furthermore, the current budget gap in Massachuetts is 500 million dollars, nearly all of which could be made up with a fully functioning cannabis market in the state. The sooner these stores open, the better.

    Not sure why they would want to delay the tax revenue any longer; it is simply untenable for anyone to justify these delays as anything but a slap in the face to the voters (who have already waited 2+ years beyond what was mandated in the law that was passed in 2016).

    Dragging heels is one thing, this borders on insulting.

    [–] Schiff invites Strzok to appear before House Intelligence Committee AssuredlyAThrowAway -17 points ago in politics

    What is it exactly you need to see?

    Well, ideally his public testimony...which is what this discussion is about I suppose.

    [–] Schiff invites Strzok to appear before House Intelligence Committee AssuredlyAThrowAway -70 points ago in politics

    I'm a little confused about your personal attacks;

    Isn't the reason this hearing is occurring due to statements made by Strzok himself in his text messages?

    Furthermore; I imagine congressional investigators could come to a different conclusion than the OIG, in which case the matter should certainly continue to be investigated.

    That said, although it may taint the foundations of the Russia and Email probe, I don't think, in either instance, it would render those probes worthless. In fact, I would suggest that even if the worst possible scenario were confirmed (that Strzok, Page, McCabe or Comey colluded to influence either investigation) it would not take away from the findings of the Russia probe in any way whatsoever.

    A permanent Church Committee (and the continuation of the Mueller probe) seems the most appropriate response.

    [–] Schiff invites Strzok to appear before House Intelligence Committee AssuredlyAThrowAway -55 points ago in politics

    Well, I think most people in this country want him to testify.

    In fact, I was listening to testimony yesterday that indicated Stzrok was directly involved with the change of wording in Comey's public statement from "gross negligence" to "extremely careless".

    Those actions, in light of his text messages in relation to both probes (email and russia), seem to me to warrant testimony without a doubt. I'm actually somewhat glad Schiff is willing to look into the issue rather than trying to sweep it under the rug.

    That said, if it turns out that Strzok did not attempt to use his office to undermine either investigation, and his testimony clarifies his statements, that is a certainly a good thing. However, if he is not able to do so I would suggest we might see another Church Committee in relation to abuses in the FBI and DoJ.
