[–] Relative on FB gatekeeping cursive and who gets to argue with them! BackBae 1 points ago in gatekeeping

Not only was I born after 1995, when I was in high school my technology teacher (definitely born pre 95) wanted to show off that the new SMARTBoard could recognize cursive, but he didn’t know how to write some of the letters...

A good name for the baby you have after your family has spent years hounding you to have a baby

[–] My brother got me an AK74 for my birthday BackBae 3 points ago in knifeclub

This is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while. Kudos to him for making me snort-laugh.

You don’t just have a non-rotating hook for catching the mooring and then staring at it dumbly while desperately maintaining your grip because you didn’t think you’d get this far?

Per google there doesn’t appear to be any other Brooklines in the US and that does look like the font of Brookline fire trucks (though the mustache appears more Cambridge- the cowboy hat, Walpole).

[–] My boyfriend is a red pill BackBae 3 points ago in AskFeminists

“The red pill was right about one thing- I’m going to dump your ass for a better person: me.”

And then do so. If you feel so inclined to date again, there’s thousands of way, way better options out there than a man who treats you like crap.

Fort Hill/Highland Park would be my guess. There appears to be a fort on it (similar icon as on Castle Island). The road to the southwest of it would be what is now Washington Street.

Love that both parents styled their hair and mom put on makeup before going to open gifts.

[–] What are some name criticisms which make you roll your eyes? BackBae 44 points ago in namenerds

Calling common middle names “filler names”

Mary, Marie, Rose, Ann, etc. are popular as middle names because they work well with many female names!

When I was a kid you always it was The Thing To Do to have initials or monograms on your backpack. I think it’s worth at least making sure your kid won’t be ASS or ZIT (or, at least take note to use a monogram instead if that’s the case!)

[–] Whats acceptable to have to explain to a child, but unacceptable to have to explain to a adult? BackBae 1 points ago in AskReddit

My boyfriend struggles with this (and speaks with his mouth full!!!!) and it’s gotten to the point where I just don’t want to go on restaurant dates anymore to avoid the embarrassment.

[–] What is the scariest story you know that is 100% true? BackBae 5 points ago in AskReddit

There’s risk in everything you do, but some is higher.

about 90 people die in crashes in the US daily - that’s not counting injuries.

I cannot find a statistic on how many people are attacked by bums on public transit daily in the US- but I bet it’s less than 90.

Unless we find a statistic showing the rates are close, equating the risk of the two is ridiculous. You’re probably more likely to die while driving to the depot than you are to be attacked on the train.

(Also, I have friends that live 30 miles away- I take the train to visit them. If we put effort into public transit, we can become less car reliant.)

Do you have a better suggestion? Doing nothing at all will continue to feed into those hundreds of deaths a day, which you must believe should be changed.

“Nothing comes close to that kind of freedom”

...walking? It’s what we did for thousands of years. Honestly if I’m in a place that’s car-reliant I feel way more trapped than I do in a place that supports walking, trains, etc. I don’t have to worry about finding parking or being blocked in, I can drink, I don’t have to worry about an asset worth thousands being damaged, I’ve minimized the risk of being killed by the thing statistically most likely to kill people my age. It certainly feels like freedom to some people but it feels the exact opposite for others!

[–] when male authors ask "what's wrong with my writing?" BackBae 96 points ago in menwritingwomen

Sorry, I should’ve specified: I was referring to the books. LotR has a few female characters but I can’t remember any from The Hobbit.
