[–] [meta] Let's talk about subreddit content, midlevels, and moderation. BackBae 7 points ago in medicine

Re:midlevels- it tends to go to hell when someone starts insinuating that APPs aren’t as smart or didn’t do as well in school, otherwise they would’ve gone to med school! Censoring actual comments might bar conversation, but a reminder in the sidebar that medical teams work together and everyone has their own reasons for their chosen path might be nice.

I feel like a celebrity commented on my post! Can you sign my rum bottle??

For this particular bottle the owner mentioned that they’re not supposed to name the distilleries or be too specific about it. I’m not knowledgeable enough about the topic to comment on a larger scale than that.

$38; yes, a lot. Their Hub Punch is delightful and great for mixing, and they have a premade old-fashioned that’s actually pretty great. They also make one of my favorite gins.

Wanna drop the name of that soup bag?

[–] It really do be like that sometimes.. BackBae 1 points ago in premed

That, and we’re an old and well-respected profession with plenty of barriers to keep out the undesirables with plausible deniability that it’s for other reasons.

[–] What's normal to do as a child but creepy to do as an adult? BackBae 13 points ago in AskReddit

I actually have to carry specimens at work sometimes, which are in a cooler with a scary biohazard warning on all sides. Pretty delightful to watch patient and family reactions when I walk past them holding it.

I will occasionally do this when I’m late to work and wearing scrubs (work at a hospital). It’s never an emergency but people do get out of the way for a person in scrubs who’s in a hurry.

Also got the chance to meet the owners of the distillery, Will and Dave, who are, for a lack of better words, wicked cool guys. They suggested a rum old fashioned and a daiquiri, both of which I plan on trying :)

[–] An interesting idea BackBae 2 points ago in tumblr

One of my favorite things about working in a hospital is I can run from place to place and no one questions it, especially if I’m holding my pager in a visible location.

If she's not above looking through your meds, and really wants grandkids... I'd look into locking up your birth control pills, or thinking about switching to a tamper proof method (IUDs are lovely, the arm implant and the shot are also MIL-proof).

Made me chuckle. Thank you, kind stranger.

[–] When I forgot to bring my reusable bags to the grocery store BackBae 7 points ago in ZeroWaste

I have a reusable bag that folds up real tiny that I leave in my backpack- definitely helps.

It is the norm in the US at least- if you want federal funding for your research, you need an IACUC.

Your teacher didn’t explain the rationale for euthanasia after drug testing? That’s a pretty horrific and biased oversight. Animals aren’t always euthanized after testing- when they are it’s to prevent them and their community from unforeseen adverse events, or for dissection to evaluate side effects that can’t otherwise be observed (source ).

Not a vegan (but I do minimize animal product consumption out of environmental concern)- I prefer leather to synthetics. I’d rather have something that’ll biodegrade than something that’ll stick around the Earth long after I’m gone.

You don’t have to pay humans for participating. You actually typically don’t pay them at all or pay very small amounts. Paying moderate to large amounts is seen as unethical and may be unfair to lower income people who will volunteer for the money, which is seen as coercion.

You are correct, up until recently prisoners were used as test subjects.

Every research institute in the US that does animal testing has one.
