Pick a song you like and look up the chords. Learn how to play those chords.

Well, which piece do you like the most? Listen to recordings and pick the one you'd most rather play.

You can start by learning the notes on the keyboard. Then learn scales and major triads.

First of all, great job with what you've done so far. I'm sure your girlfriend will really appreciate the effort. Transcribing is time-consuming even for experienced musicians but very rewarding.

The song is in Ab major. Basically you want to work out the most common chords found in the song, which are Db, Eb, and Ab. Then go over to the circle of fifths and find which key is the most centered around those chords. Another way would be to note down which accidentals are played throughout the song. He only ever plays Bb, Eb, Ab, Db. Look up a list of key signatures and you'll see that is the key of Ab major.

The rhythm you're looking for is dotted 16th, dotted 16th, regular 16th (and then that pattern again). A rookie mistake would be to confuse it with triplets.

If you need more help head over to /r/transcribe (of which I am a mod).

Yeah you could get one of those little headphone amps.

Does it affect the playability? Are they causing fret buzz?

Get the SD-1, you'll like it. Skip the compressor unless you actually gig/record. Also if you weren't already, consider getting your pedals used. Most major cities have a thriving market for effects pedals.

    1. It does matter, personally I find if I press in the direction closer to the bridge it is less likely to produce buzz. I have skinny fingers so this may not affect everyone. The effect is more pronounced on acoustic.

    2. Lots of factors here but the main ones that come to mind are resonance of the instrument itself, effects, and gain setting of the amp. Play a chunky Les Paul into a cranked Marshal and it will sing for days. Compressors and dirt pedals (overdrive, distortion, fuzz) will also help.

I can’t even identify the individual components. What are the pillars made of?

Hope I’m not remembering this wrong, but Debussy’s Girl with the Flaxen Hair?

A lot of people who haven’t progressed very far (or at all) in music theory think enharmonic equivalents are interchangeable. Very common with self-taught beginners.

Given the circumstances... it's gotta feel pretty good compared to being dead.

You sure you'll feel the same way when you lose a loved one? I wouldn't be so quick to judge if you haven't been through it.

I'm in charge of music for my 1 year old's bedtime routine. Last night I actually was trying to find something relaxing and selected a Bach English Suite. Unfortunately the 1st movement was quite energetic and he started dancing. I was so proud.

Thom Yorke plays one, that’s good enough for me.
