[–] California Autobahn? Long-shot bill proposes freeway lanes with no speed limit BlueShellOP 7 points ago in bayarea

My problem isn't the laissez faire attitude, it's our insistence on forcing everyone to drive. It is near impossible to live in California without some kind of motor vehicle, and that means that everyone has to drive. Which means that people who should not be on the road have to be.

Like it or not, driving in the US is heavily subsidized.

    +1

CHP would have to start cracking down on proper lane usage hard before this even becomes a possibility. The Autobahn works because people stay the fuck out of the left lane unless they are passing. Also, I found that German drivers tend to change lanes a lot, and actually use their indicators.

It'd be a disaster if we attempted the same without beefing up CHP.

Actually, no one is enforcing rules on the German autobahn.

    This is not correct.

Yeah, I've popped in from time-to-time since 2014 and the game just keeps getting better and more interesting. Even just messing around in creative mode is tons of fun; I've lost quite a few nights to "Oh I'll just tweak this bit".

Also, I love your username. V-Twins are awesome. Especially when they're not 45 degree V-Twins ;)

    Heya!

I haven't actually gotten around to it yet - I was pretty busy with school/work and then I got laid off last month!

So, my hobbies have been on hold for a couple weeks while I find a new job. But I will bookmark your comment because that looks perfect! So thanks for finding that.

Amusingly, the only game I play that actually gives my 1070 a challenge is VR. But even then I'm mostly playing H3VR and Beat Sabre; neither of which are that demanding.

[–] What are some basic car things(repairs, maintenance, etc) that we should know? BlueShellOP 4 points ago in AskMen

Jacks are not good stands - you don't want 2 tons resting on a single tiny spot. Too many people have painfully died when a car fell on them.

    Just don't.

[–] What are some basic car things(repairs, maintenance, etc) that we should know? BlueShellOP 3 points ago in AskMen

    BARE MINIMUM:

    • Change a tire

      • Recognize when you need to replace your tires!
    • Change your battery

    • Check fluid levels and add more if needed

    • Replace wiper blades

    • Replace burnt out bulbs

Oil changes are pretty straightforward, but if you don't have an easy way to dispose of your oil, it's usually easier to just pay someone to do it. Most basic stuff can be done with a regular wrench/socket set, but newer cars are getting more and more complicated.

    Oh, before I forget:

DO NOT WORK UNDER A CAR THAT IS STILL ON THE JACK.

(Jack stands / ramps are fine if the car is on level and stable ground)

    Safety first, motherfuckers.

[–] How do I pick a cell phone provider? BlueShellOP 4 points ago in AskMen

You'll probably want Verizon. Their network has a looooooot more coverage, and they tend to be where other carriers aren't.

I'm just pointing out how absurd your argument is. You can't just casually say "There's not enough electricity to power cars" unironically and expect people to want to agree with you. Electricity production is arguably the least important problem to electric cars.

If you were making a serious argument, you'd point out that the grid itself is what needs to be upgraded. You'd also make arguments about a lack of electric charging infrastructure - both residential and commercial. You'd also point out that battery production is nowhere near the levels that we'd need to switch over to EVs entirely. And then there's that Gas Tax problem...

You're trying to frame the debate as a zero-sum problem, and that is nowhere near grounded in reality. If we're gonna talk about transit infrastructure, you need to bring facts into the debate, not misleading arguments.

    Short-term, yes. Long-term, no.

Our highways quite simply cannot meet the demand, and a reduced reliance on gas means that revenue earmarked for our roads is going to decline. The best solution is sane zoning and city planning, and a nice robust transit system.

It's not a problem that can be solved overnight. It'll take at least a decade, and longer if we keep dragging our feet.

Well, you've got a point. There's a huge market for good robotics, and good automation, but fortunately for all of us, it's extremely niche and difficult to get in to.

Blame should be on urban planners and architects who thought it would be a good idea to put cars ahead of people and create a civilization with zero mobility or human interaction.

This is a symptom of a greater problem in US politics:

Our fucking government (at almost every level, mind you) cares more about profits than its citizens. It's high time US voters started giving a shit about democracy again.

We do and we don't. Physics is getting in the way of hardware design, and software design often has to account for that. The switch to parallel processing is a consequence of thermal limits of modern CPUs.

In my opinion, software development hasn't been hardware limited for years. Developers are having a hard time keeping up with the truly insane amounts of compute power we have access to right now.

My problem with the pressure cooker is that I really can't stand any sort of pulled meat. Once you cook meat down that much, it loses all of its texture and just tasted and feels bland to me.

That being said, a pressure cooker can be used to make Chasu, yogurt, and quite a few other items; so they're definitely worth their price. Especially since that price is <$50.

They're ideologues all right alright. I just wish they at least tried to be more relatable. But I guess I'll settle for them trying to relate to techies, since the average person definitely has no idea how anything (computer-related) really works.

Unfortunately, it's really hard to articulate their message in a manner that appeals to everyone. Their message forces you to confront some rather dark parts of our society, and not many people want to admit those parts exist.

This comment has reminded me why I wanted to pursue software engineering instead of computer engineering.

No matter how stupid software development can get, at least we don't have physics fighting us.
