[–] Correcting distortion losslessly/How do I stack extreme widefields in DeepSkyStacker? DanielJStein 1 points ago in AskAstrophotography

If you have access to a Mac, StarryLandscapeStacker absolutely shines in this category, no comparison. But, there are still a few things you can do with windoge.

Try stacking in Photoshop if you have that. Also try stacking before applying lens correction, then apply them afterwards.

Do you have a budget in mind? The thing with tripods is you can very well spend little money now, but that means you will need to upgrade when you outgrow its flaws. Or, you can fork up a lot more cash up front and never need to upgrade ever again. Some brands sorted by tier are:

    Low tier

    • Crappy off-brands I never heard of sold on Amazon, usually Chinese made
    • Any tripod made out of plastic
    • Older tripods from the 70's and whatnot which are heavy and clunky
    • Surveying tripods used for construction
    • Don't buy anything from this tier

    Mid tier

    • Brands like Benro, MeFoto, Oben.
    • These tripods will support the weight of your camera and then some, but don't expect to have good tracking with them due to load capacity restrictions
    • These tripods may still be heavy and non-compact
    • You may get one now to save money, but you will want to upgrade down the line

    Upper tier

    • Brands like Manfrotto, Sirui, Fiesol, Peak Design
    • These tripods will go the distance, have no problem supporting a tracker and full frame DSLR
    • Lighter and more compact than the category above, but still room for improvement
    • Certain tripods still have low load capacity restrictions, you will need to read the specs carefully
    • Aluminum and carbon fiber materials are used, expect to pay more for carbon.
    • You may want to upgrade wayyyy further down the line when you have a very heavy rig on your tracker, such as a 100-400 lens with counterweights.

    Top of the line

    • Brands like Really Right Stuff, Gitzo
    • The be all end all, you will never need to upgrade a tripod from these brands pending the make and model of the tripod of course
    • These brands often make tripods which are super lightweight, but have high load capacities. For example my Gitzo weighs 1.9 lbs, but has a capacity of 22 lbs.
    • Carbon fiber materials used exclusively
    • Bonkers expensive at times but again, you won't need to upgrade

Seconding RRS. Expensive, but like you said it's one and done.

Is the camera 's built in long exposure noise reduction on? If so, switch it off.

[–] I do photography as a hobby and share my photos I have worked hard on for free. Apparently I am not allowed to credit myself with my own little watermark. DanielJStein 30 points ago in ChoosingBeggars

Thank you! You are going to have people crop, and depending on how big and bright your watermark is will ultimately dictate what inclines people to do so.

Your best bet is to shrink down your watermark and lower its opacity. Place it in an area of the image which actually compliments your composition. I know it sounds crazy, but people are less likely to notice it if it just kind of follows your image naturally. Looking towards the future, a logo will also be more attractive than a name. People kind of like that aesthetic. I would love to see your work as well!

You bet I’m leaving that wateryboi in! Thanks for your encouragement, my watermark has my website in it for this reason.

Edit: since you guys are so wonderful and supportive many of you have been wondering where you can see my work. Check out my Instagram @danieljstein for a snippet of what I do!
