    I don't think the conversion of a farm land to a commercial land is as simple as giving a few clearances from the local administration, and that is for the owner to take up with the government and not the lessee.

    That said, what they were doing was clearly illegal. They were demanding a bribe to turn a blind eye. But many people find it convenient to not go through the due legal processes but rather bribe these people and get on with it.

    Driving a man to suicide despicable and there is no justification for that, but the law is the law.

    The only sweets is payasam. I'm not sure if the Sharkara Upperi counts as a sweet. But neither of them have saffron in them.

    YSK Churches in Kerala have quite a few practices that mimic Hinduism. For example, churches have a flagpole known as a kodimaram, which is usually found in temples where the flag is hoisted during the annual celebration.
