[–] What open source/free version of premium software are available but often go underused, like this one? Dlatrex 1 points ago in AskReddit

A lifetime ago I used photoshop for work, but only for boring restorations. Now years later while browsing one of these askreddit posts someone pointed me to Photopea.com which is just spectacular! It’s lovely to be able to revisit photoshop years later at $0.

That particular thread didn’t specialize in software: are there any other similar gems out there we should be aware of?

The 2004 Unreal Tournament lent proof to the G.I.F.T. that helps explain this phenomena.

Its medical name is the Online disihibition effect

Either way, it's a TV trope now.

[–] Using conservation of angular momentum to produce a shockwave and “whip” out a flame. Dlatrex 1 points ago in physicsgifs

No, to do this correctly you have to execute a “crack” which produces a shockwave.

Dustin from smarter every day has a great video capturing the super sonic movement in film and some of the implications for physics.

It is possible to snuff the candle through just the passage of the fall and thong of the whip (the portions of leather) instead of the cracker, as they are more massive. You have to stand closer and execute a different cast.

However my rig specifically tries to teach against that. If I produce that much wind, the light cup and the lightly held candle will either shake or get knocked over.

As is you can see the wick shake very slightly from the passage of the whip a few frames after the flame goes out. That’s the larger body of air moving following the leading shockwave.

[–] What do you own more of than anyone else you know? Dlatrex 1 points ago in AskReddit

    Bull whips and stockwhips.

That could probably be expanded to melee weapons, although some of my friends do have swords.

I’ll say wasters or training sabres. No one around to fence with. 😐

Have you been able to attend a tournament? If you don’t have a local store you can still make friends at those periodic events even if they are a bit out of your way. Never regretted going to ‘Ard Boyz or the like :)

[–] Hey Redditors, what is a skill you taught yourself that you're really proud of? Dlatrex 1 points ago in AskReddit

whipcracking. Doing cracking and target work can be self taught, but as I now teach others, it is much much better to have an instructor!

[–] What photograph isn't really that spectacular, but with the backstory/context it says a whole lot more? Dlatrex 5024 points ago in AskReddit

This fine darling in a dress would later go on to become the president of the United States of America.

    According to the Smithsonian -

Social convention of 1884, when FDR was photographed at age 2 1/2, dictated that boys wore dresses until age 6 or 7, also the time of their first haircut. Franklin’s outfit was considered gender-neutral.

Yep! As said above this is characteristic of sliders and painted turtles. The boys typically are the ones doing this as they have very long foreclaws. Turtle salons would be doing manicures for guys almost exclusively to attract a mate. With these beauties they may also engage in a gentle loving caress to encourage the much larger lady turtle to sink down for the deed.

However I’ve seen plenty of times where the girl is not interested in the guys advances and will react as if she is being slapped in the face. Usually by nipping at his fingers.
