[–] Conspiracy theories? FuzzyKittenIsFuzzy 4 points ago in latterdaysaints

Well the tunnels exist, though most of the ones leaving temple square have been deliberately collapsed. I've been in the tunnels and seen multiple entrances off of temple square myself.

Virgins jumping from the temple into the great salt lake was a main criticism leveled by a very, very early anti book. If I recall correctly the poor girls were trying to escape being polygamously married. Obviously (given geography) this never happened.

I have never heard of these two things being put together into a conspiracy theory.

I did hear one guy tell his son that the church keeps all their money in the tunnels, which was technically almost correct until the tunnel to the bank was destroyed. The tunnel connected to the bank basement right next to the vault.

[–] The Ancients Knew of Christ as our Advocate with Heavenly Father FuzzyKittenIsFuzzy 0 points ago in latterdaysaints

Are... Are you saying that broader Christianity has lost the belief that Jesus' position as our advocate was planned before creation? I can assure you this belief is alive and well throughout Christianity. The premortal Jesus discussing his future role with the Father is not a strange idea in the Christian world.

I like your use of the word oversubscribed. It makes this seem more understandable/relatable compared to a sentence with the words supply and demand.

Very old buildings sometimes have a small area with couches for "resting" in the ladies "restroom." I was told it was intended for pregnant and nursing women, especially as those conditions covered a majority of a woman's adult life for many women before the widespread use of the pill. I've only seen it myself in one building.

You can't tolerate people because you disagree with them?

Family reunions must be torture for you.

There's a big difference between finding a belief ridiculous and finding people who hold it intolerable.

It isn't. Solid gold is too soft to be very useful for casting large decorative items.

The altar is under the spire, which fell, but (due to the wind possibly?) it fell to the opposite side of the altar compared to that cross. There's a whole bunch of charred debris in front of the altar and the cross is behind the altar.

Looking at the layout of the building I think the area in front of the altar was mostly open space for the priests to walk.

Not taking a position that this was divine intervention, but I agree this post is in poor taste. The standing cross "miracle" is symbolic of our collective sigh of relief when it became clear that the building wasn't a total loss. Religious people are going to express that relief in religious terms especially since the building and the standing cross are both religious symbols. Other people will use other words to express their relief. Saying "it's not a miracle, dummy!" may be true but it's ignoring what people are trying to express, which is a feeling we all have. It comes across as really tone deaf.

You're still trying to be edgy. Ask yourself, are you trying to convert me or trying to write me into a story you can tell your friends later? What's the point?

"I'll ask God to do you a favor" and "I'll do your thinking instead of you doing it yourself" are not conceptual equivalents. The word "for" has a wide range of meanings just like all prepositions do, and just because two sentences are structured similarly and use the same preposition doesn't make them conceptually similar. Example: I'll jump over you vs. I'll cry over you. Second example: By the emperor's command vs by the emperor's ankle. Same structure, same preposition, not conceptually similar. Prepositions are weird like that.

If you want to discuss your actual thoughts here, there are innumerable opportunities. If you want to look edgy so you can tell your friends how you pnwd those sheeple, you aren't going to get much of a story to tell before you end up banned.

You'll think for me? That's pretty condescending. And I'm certain my clients at work would prefer to have somebody with my particular degree doing the thinking about their files!

There are ways to engage believers and in some cases even convert them to atheism. Edgy comments are not one of those ways. There are plenty of threads on this sub at any given time where you can engage people using well-thought-out comments. We even have an atheist mod here, you are perfectly welcome to be here and to comment with your perspective on things. But comments designed to be edgy are never an effective engagement strategy, and in some cases they break sub rules as well.

The location is pretty close to that trail, it's the other side of the same canyon according to a different article.

The lead holding the glass together has a much lower melting point.

The South window was redone just recently and will need to be redone again, the pictures are showing the North window.

Try inviting some Mormon missionaries over and have two way discussions with them about beliefs. Repeat with JWs. Your school will consider all of them "unsaved" and you don't have to be invasive to anyone else.

Reading Paradise was fairly instrumental in my (much) later conversion. Underrated book IMO.

[–] Cross shining through smoke and ash in smoldering Notre Dame interior FuzzyKittenIsFuzzy 2 points ago in Christianity

This is among the first "after" pictures of the interior.

Besides the cross, personally I find the angels on the right particularly gripping.
