[–] Simon Cowell breaks back falling off electric bike in US Glassbox315 36 points ago in television

Very disturbed by the responses here. A back injury can be devastating, and not an ounce of sympathy in the comments. The guy might be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life and you’re all like ‘hurr hurr American Idol reference hurr’.

Bunch of fucking psychopaths, holy shit

alright, I think we're crossing a line here. There's nothing wrong with the way that she scares people on her show. It's a fun, light-hearted prank she does that harms no one. This feels like a case of starting with the end conclusion (that Ellen is toxic) and using that to redefine all of her other actions, even if they aren't applicable. You're making a harmless joke seem like some manipulative display of dominance, when it probably was in fact a harmless joke, regardless of everything else she's done.

It's the difference between nice and kind. Kathy's not nice but she is kind, Ellen is nice but she's not kind.

Edit: tbh I don’t actually know if Kathy Griffin’s kind or not, but let’s pretend she is for the sake of the example

I wrote a dark speculative short story called ‘Call it a Hoax.’ It’s been published in ‘The Bigger Picture’ on Medium, and I just want to spread the word to anyone who’d be interested reading it. You can find the story here: https://medium.com/bigger-picture/call-it-a-hoax-4e178b7165aa?source=friends_link&sk=c1e01437ffeaf2175371a0bf09c1e576

I mean penicillin seemed like a net positive to me

Completely agree. This is part of what annoys me so much about the elitism towards Medium pieces. I can’t even submit a link to medium on most subreddits because they’re considered to be “glorified blog posts.” And while sure, there is indeed a lot of low-quality articles on Medium, it’s becoming increasingly clear that you can find just as much trash from multi-billion dollar newspaper companies. The fact that this WSJ piece is allowed to be published on r/politics but this medium piece would be auto-removed annoys the hell out of me

I love movies that portray sci-fi concepts in a positive way. (Like the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror, for example.) it’s so easy and expected to for a sci-fi movie to go dark, but it’s harder and more impressive to write a story where the technology is a genuine net positive

With the popularity of Uber and other easy to contact cab companies, and a much stronger public awareness of the dangers of drunk driving, do we believe the rates will go back up if we lower the drinking age?

I wouldn’t be surprised if harsher sentencing and the anti-drunk driving campaigns had more to do with the reduction in drunk driving.

Edit: reading that link, this quote felt kinda flawed to me

Recent efforts to lower MLDAs to 18 and issue licenses to drink upon completion of alcohol education have gained local and national media attention. There is no evidence that alcohol education can even partially replace the effect of MLDA-21.

How could there be adequate evidence for something we’ve never tried before? That seems like more of a personal take than a statistic-based conclusion

So forty-fifty percent of all Americans don’t deserve the right to vote?

Also, I just want to say I resent the fact that you assume I’m intentionally “spouting bullshit,” lol. Have you considered the possibility that maybe I was just honestly mistaken? I mean geez, you really went right at me, didn’t you?

It’s just that every single person I know either a) has drunk alcohol before they turned 21 or b) agrees that the under-21 rule is dumb. When you live in a place where every single person around you agrees on something, it’s easy to assume that’s true of the rest of the country, especially since there’s nothing about the two places I’ve lived in that would make them seem unusual compared to the rest of the country

Yep. You don’t get to order for the whole table if you’re about to leave the restaurant

I don’t know, as someone who’s been drinking since fifteen or so, I’m not all that convinced that lowering the age will make things worse for teens. High schoolers are already drinking by sophomore year. What we need to do is teach kids to drink responsibly. As it is now, we’re encouraging underage people to binge drink, and because it’s illegal they’re afraid to ask for help if something happens, like if someone gets alcohol poisoning. In a lot of European countries the age limits are a lot less strict, and it’s not a big problem because the teens understand how to drink for fun, not just drink to get drunk.

I do want to add that those other two links feel like fairy blatant pseudoscience, among the same realm as “if you eat chocolate three times a month, you’ll live longer than someone who eats more or less!”

I’m on my phone now but I plan on looking deeper into that first link when I get the chance. The disdain for the 21 age limit — as well as the widespread knowledge that minors will drink beer constantly before they ‘come of age’ anyway, is so widespread that the idea that so many Americans support it is genuinely shocking to me.

[–] No, Eighteen Is Not Too Young to Vote Glassbox315 1 points ago in neoliberal

Wow that’s a disappointing statistic. I must live in a bubble of some kind, because even though I’m surrounded by conservatives and liberals I still have not met a single person who thinks the 21 limit is sensible in any way. Where are these 70% of Americans? Where are they hiding?
