[–] Has anybody read Jordan Belfort's book? Halzman 1 points ago in sales

I have, and I've watched his video course on the straight line persuasion. But I also don't work in the sales field (bought it to get a general understanding of sales). I'd highly recommend getting the book at least (has the same content as the video series, just not as in depth).

I found his system to be pretty intuitive, once you understand all the interconnected concepts.

Here are some quotes from a NY Time article on the matter [source]

...protective housing unit of the federal jail in Lower Manhattan...

supposed to have been checked by the two guards in the protective housing unit every 30 minutes, but that procedure was not followed that night

he was supposed to have had another inmate in his cell, three officials said. But the jail had recently transferred his cellmate and allowed Mr. Epstein to be housed alone, a decision that also violated the jail’s procedures, the two officials said.

I'm sure some sort of meeting was had at the upper level of this pedophile ring. I mean, in a case that implicates a lot of rich and powerful people, you would need the power to reverse or suspend SOPs (standard operating procedures) at a Federal Correctional Center, and then have someone walk in, disable the camera for that cell, and kill your target. I seriously doubt one man alone had enough clout to get all this done - which implies the involvement of a group or organization.

This whole scheme has all the makings of some sort of clandestine cell, similar to one used in intelligence operations and special forces.

[–] How would you handle a new Stargate show? Halzman 3 points ago in Stargate

I've had the following series idea in my head for many years now - An SGC member comes across a project Janus had setup to relaunch the ancient civilization.

The basic premise revolves around the fact that when Dr. Weir shows up at Atlantis 10k years ago, it gives Janus hope that there kind would still be around. The ancients as we know, were unable to defeat the wraith, imo, because they lacked conviction towards warfare (which is something we are good at).

Basic backstory is that once Janus went through the Atlantis stargate, back to earth, he begins the process of coming up with his plan. The timeship in the milky way was part of a separate project Janus ran to determine exactly who we are (the SGC/Atlantis expedition) as a people. He determined that he couldn't blindly trust us (IOA, politics, corruption, etc) but recognized that certain individuals did posses 'the spirit and values of the ancients'.

Main character would be someone with the equivalent US Army SF training (Unconventional Warfare) with somewhat of a technical background (not quite Carter or McKay level though). He basically finds himself in a Lantian Ship Yard, located in another galaxy or the void between galaxies, that has the capabilities to build a Atlantis class city-ship, 3 aurora-class warships, ZPMs, etc - everything needed to begin rebuilding. Maybe a Janus version of Cortana, or holographic McKay....

I always though that after Unending (SG-1 s10e20), Earth basically has all the technology at it's disposal to eliminate our current economic model. If we have matter conversion technology, and the power capabilities for intergalactic hyperdrive and plasma beam weapons - the SGC has procured the technologies it's mandate set it out to do. IMO, the SGC should secede from Earth entirely.

McKay hinted in The Last Man (SGA S04e20) the eventual outcome of Earth.

You saw what happened in Pegasus; you know what's happening here. Do you really think this is the way it's supposed to be?

It can wrap up, SG-1/SGA storylines, the SGU storyline, as well as continue on with the 'exploring planets' storylines. Plus we'd finally be able to see what the Ancients could of been at there peak.

I look at a relationship and being a couple, similar to a business partner or investor. Two individuals combining resources and skills towards a common vision, while also having the freedom to explore there own individual interests without interference.

And just like a business, you have the admin, finance, logistics, r&d, and operations to deal with. Trust and communication at this level is what ensures that the 'relationship' will be successful. Anything beyond that is completely independent, and has no effect on the relationship itself.

Until you begin factoring in emotions and relationship dynamics.

To illustrate this through a scenario. Lets say a couple sets up there finances with 3 accounts, 1 for each individual, and a joint account for the relationship. Lets say the financial split was 15-15-70 - so if combined they made 100k p/year net, each would get a 15k payout to there individual accounts p/year, and 70k would go to expenses. Living expenses, vehicle expenses, retirement/investments, medical/insurance expenses, 1 year emergency fund, home renovation budgets for the next 10 years, etc - all maxed out, planned and accounted for within the relationship, up to and beyond retirement.

Then one day, a 100k item shows up at your home - turns out individual has wanted [insert expensive item] all his life, bought Tesla stocks a few years back, and made enough gains recently where he sold enough to buy [insert expensive item].

    - We could have paid off the house now

    - We could have bought those investments sooner

    - We could have taken that trip this year

It's pretty reasonable to expect that the other person would react strongly to such a high priced purchase - but the reaction defeats the very purpose of the relationship.

For example, I come from a background of RF (Radio Frequency) electronics. A typical test setup, complete with ~ 8 pieces of equipment, can run in the 250k range. A high frequency network analyzer, which is no bigger than a toaster oven, starts off in the 50k range (like a Keysight E5071C) - all so I can see how flat a line is across the screen. As a hobby, it is absurdly expensive to get into.

Unless your a couple who are already 'retired' and living off residual income from investments, that's a hard conversation to have. But it's also that person's money to do with as they please, to explore there own individual interest without interference.

I can only speak to myself, but when I build a system, I look to put something together that will hold me over for ~ 5 years.

My first system I put together (2009) was a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ w/ GeForce 9800GT OC. I used it until 2015, when I upgraded to a AMD FX 8370E w/ GTX 750Ti SC. In 2017, I upgraded the GPU to a GTX 1080 FE, and then in 2018 I upgraded the CPU to a AMD Ryzen 7 1800X. Aside from wanting to upgrade the GPU to a 3080 in Q2-Q3 of 2021, I see no other reason to upgrade the remaining system.

I'd love to get a Ryzen 7 5800/5900X for a CPU, but I dont really need too.

The basic trend is that I'll run my system until it cant handle modern games, upgrade the GPU to extend it's life for a few more years, and then upgrade the CPU. Offsetting the CPU and GPU upgrades has worked out pretty well for me, it terms of cost vs performance.

My Ryzen system was around $1800, including the GPU price ($550)

u/llwonder made a reply to another comment in this thread, that encompasses my opinion on the matter

It’s a tough balance. In theory, it’s simple as “it’s your money, go have fun”. But there are so many other factors. Does he have other hobbies (guitars for example are very expensive, so if he does both it can add up - this one is me). Does he make enough money? Does he contribute to retirement? Do you already have a down payment on a house, or own a mortgage already? Do you have student loans or any debt at all?
It may be hard for the significant other to see the value of a 2 to 3 thousand dollar gaming PC. Sometimes even if you have that money, it’s just like wow you’re spending this on a PC and not redoing the tile in the kitchen.. etc. whatever you do, don’t fucking lie about it though. That’s already the end of the relationship

If you wanna talk about honesty, the next time you and your SO find yourself in this situation, ask her "whats wrong" after she rolls her eyes at you.

[–] I Can Feel The Rage Halzman -5 points ago in pcmasterrace

If you paid for it and can afford it with your own money, why would you tell a lie to your partner about how much it cost?

If you paid for it with your own money, what difference does it make what you said it costs?

Sure, there are areas in life where white lies are appropriate, but in my opinion, finances while you're in a long term relationship is not one of them.

If you're talking about a joint account that used for bills and such, then sure, I agree with you. But if it's your personal account, to do with as you please, then what difference does it make?

We both have our own money and can spend it as we please

Then what difference does it make? If it's your money then it shouldn't matter whether an item costs $30, $300, or $3000.

    I'm not married.

But, to give you an answer to your question, u/llwonder made a reply to another comment in this thread, that encompasses my opinion on the matter

[–] I Can Feel The Rage Halzman 3 points ago in pcmasterrace

I've always looked at it this way.

You take the cost of building your first system (ie: $1500) and expect to pay half that amount every 2-4 years for GPU and CPU upgrades.

[–] I Can Feel The Rage Halzman 3 points ago in pcmasterrace

    Damn bro.... that fucking sucks.

May I suggest looking for a used i5/i7 optiplex system on ebay and a used 1060/1070? That should be in console territory, and while not the system you started to get, its a stepping stone?

[–] I Can Feel The Rage Halzman 3 points ago in pcmasterrace

There's only a handful of people I do this sort of stuff for, for the exact reasons you listed. Even for those I do help, I painstakingly interrogate them on EXACTLY what they intend to use the computer for.

Usually an i5 optiplex w/ and SSD does the trick for like 99% of use cases.... I love those little machines :)
