Generally for turbo car you want to avoid lugging the engine, which means putting it in a high boost low rev situation. When you floor it at low revs it there is a higher risk of that happening instead of just revving the engine up. It's very unhealthy and doing it a lot will blow your engine.

WRX torque peaks at 2k so there is power before 2.5k. It's just not to safe to floor, when you want to go all out the car run out of breathe really fast.

The point is, even when I want to "get on it", I can't because i have to wait for a full second (or a bit more) for the rev to drop between first and second gear. If you lose power for that long a duration from a launch, you are toast. And I am talking about losing to auto corollas and such, not other sport cars.

Cobb is the way to go. Even a stage 0 tune will fix the rev hang and throttle mapping problem. People say it’s a night and day difference. From my research it seems like the cobb OTS tune is even safer than the stock tune in terms of knocks and whatever. If true I wonder how Subaru achieved that lol.

Dealership can tell if you tuned your car or not. if you blow the engine, you might be SOL. It really depends on your dealer. Some people’s cars started throwing codes. Just beware of these implications before you pull the trigger.

It's decently fun. It's got some power, push you into your seat when you get on it. Handling is great, steering is reasonably responsive, ride is tolerable. I enjoy taking it to the twisties since I don't have to deal with 1-2 shift or traffic there. You can take in the scenery with the huge windows around you and take 4 friends with you on 30mpg if you take it easy. For all the shit I talk I will probably miss it when I finally get rid of it.

But yeah there are definitely some glaring issues that are real party poopers, especially if you live in a high traffic area. Savagegeese talks about the problem with the stock tune in some of his videos too.

It's my first manual car and I barely hobbled it home from the dealership so I wasn't capable of evaluating all these drivability aspect. Some of this stuff you only know how bad it is when you live with it for a while. The plus side is now I know what to look for in the next car.

WRX is a decent package. It has AWD and decent power, gets 30+ mpg on the highway. It has 4 seats and a damn big trunk, super practical. It also has GREAT visibility which is rare in modern cars, other sport cars can't compare. It doesn't look too ridiculous like the type R. You get all that with a manual and resale is great. That's not half bad except the garbage tune. If you are willing to tune it you can get rid of the issues but I prefer not to go that route on a new car.

It's only because the stock tune for the manual is hot garbage.

Sure that shifter feels like it's moving in a box of gravel. But the real culprits:

    • throttle mapping (20% pedal = 80% throttle), combined with a super soft gas pedal, good luck on trying to fine control that.

    • Absolutely terrible rev hang for the 1-2 shift, daily rear ending risk unless you don't give a fuck about clutch longevity. If you don't want to beat the car up then every single vehicle on the road will beat you from a red light.

    • Car absolutely falls flat on its face after you rev past 4k rpm and it being a turbo engine it is only safe to floor past 2.5k rpm. Such a narrow powerband means the fun is over really quick and all you do is shift shift shift. I mean sure, it's tuned to be more friendly in daily driving (well except the 2 points mentioned above that makes it terrible for daily driving, what gives), but car really underdelivers in spirited driving.

It's just a difficult car to drive smoothly. I have not driven the CVT but I totally believe it's more livable day to day.
