I see your thinking, but I feel you’re missing my point as well. Why are LGBT+ issues controversial? What about the Black Lives Matter movement? Some would say that’s a controversial subject as well. I want my child to have an education. I understand electives. While pottery is interesting and can be beneficial it doesn’t justify an entire class, however if I’m taking a course on expressive art I would definitely expect to spend at least some small amount of time on it. I don’t believe they’re talking about a “gay class”, this was about the subject matter itself. “Choosing” which subjects I want to skip because I don’t like talking about them is the exact opposite of what a good education is. So what if you don’t like the subject? Learning about issues we don’t understand helps us all and I want my child to make informed choices in life. Running away from topics you don’t agree with is a bad precedent to set IMHO.

But I give money to the FFRF for a similar reason; to shut the religious up when they start proselytizing in places where I don’t want to hear it, like from the people that represent me in Congress for example.

Each participant was given $5 and asked how much they'd pay for thoughts and prayers from either a Christian or a nonreligious person in response to their hardship.

While self-proclaimed Christians were willing to pay for prayers—$7.17 if from a priest, $4.36 from another Christian—most atheists and agnostics were willing to pay priests and Christian strangers not to pray for them. Atheists, in particular, were willing to hand over $1.66 to avoid prayer from a priest, and a whopping $3.54 to avoid prayer from a random believer.

What a brilliant way to measure this.

How does one choose which subject is controversial enough to make it optional?

I don’t think religion should be taught in school.

You mean like Christopher Columbus, abortion, Israel, Trump and half a million other “controversial “ subjects? Give me a break.

I just don’t want Biden to be the nominee. I’m nervous that this is going to be a “should have been Bernie” kind of thing again.
