[–] Gun noob here, just had a few questions about possible guns for concealed carry ImJustaNJrefugee 1 points ago in liberalgunowners

Also check to see if there is an active chapter of the Liberal Gun Club or Pink Pistols in that area. Not all chapters are active unfortunately, but they may have members or forums that can answer questions on concerns specific to you about the area.

The U.S. Supreme Court is in Washington D.C., which is in the U.S. Eastern Time Zone

    "Back then"

Eliminating those castes, and aristocracy, was one of the benefits of the American Revolution. We reset the standards.

Carrying and brandishing are two different things. If I see someone carrying a weapon in a theater, I do not care, unless it is in his hand, in which case it is brandishing or worse. If he has it in his hand he better have a good reason for it. Just like shouting fire in a theater: Yes you can do it, but you better be right or you are in trouble.

    I disagree.

I have seen people who gasp in horror at the mere image of a gun.

I was in LA in 2000 for a convention when The Patriot was released. A bunch of us were history buffs so we went to see it one night. Near the beginning of the movie there is a scene where the two younger sons are running back to the house from woods, with rifles in thier hands and carrying some rabbits.

There were about a half dozen people in the audience who audibly gasped when they saw that, and not quietly. The power of social conditioning and peer pressure is huge.

You're welcome, that's point of posting it, other than venting of course.

I've seen a bunch of articles on suicides where presence of guns do not seem to have much effect on the rate. Not something I keep links for.

Considering the billions of military weapons in circulation, I doubt civilian arms affect the black market much, but I have no stats to back that up. It would be interesting to see though.

I have never spent more than 10 days in another country so I have no opinion of how I might feel there, hanging around tourist areas, or business areas, is far different than living daily life there. In the U.S. I have never felt the need to carry a gun with me, concealed or openly. I have had a couple of individual instances where one may have come in handy, but not an everyday need. It seems like a bit of a hassle, not even counting the permit. I do not have a carry permit though I plan to get one just for ease of future purchases here in NC.

I haven’t met anyone who things a self defense gun is bad.

I am not saying a SD gun is bad, but how using it can be made illegal and therefore be added to the score of 'bad' uses.

You can see what has happened in NY. There was a case of a man put in prison for using his gun in self defense, in his own home, because his paperwork with the state was incomplete. He had recently moved into the state. Not to mention what has happened in Britain.

So that defensive use is now counted in the 'guns r bad' column.

There are many I have run into who think all guns are bad and should be banned regardless of intent or use. Whether for target shooting, hunting, or anything else.

Isn't that true for guns as well?

Hindering access to them prevents the positive uses, fails to restrict the negative uses, and amplifies the appearance of negative uses. It can even cause positive uses (self defense) to be interpreted as negative. It becomes a self-reinforcing feedback loop of negative information about guns.

And how we use them is on us, it always is.

And out of the two, one of them can effect the life of others under the wrong hands.

    Both can.

Words motivate people to kill, and have done so throughout history, regardless of the presence of any particular type of weapon.

So does modernity just move goalposts?

1,000 years ago would we be blaming iron and steel knives for violence and murder?

5,000 years ago would we be blaming copper axes and knives?

10,000 years ago would we be blaming the rocks used for spear-points and arrowheads?

It seems like following any version of the argument against the tool, that we would keep blaming everything except the one constant throughout history: Humans

[–] ‘Full life ahead.’ 15-year-old boy shot, killed in Charlotte during robbery, CMPD says ImJustaNJrefugee 7 points ago in NorthCarolina

Or better yet, talk about preventing repeat offenders.

How much you want to bet the suspect has multiple prior arrests for violent or threatening behavior, with or without a gun. What was he doing out on the street?

Approximately 29% of North Carolinians own firearms. That indicates that Charlotte, with about 900,000 residents has about 300,000 gun owners.

300,000 who did no harm to anyone yesterday. You are going to punish all of them because one guy decided to become a monster?
