[–] How Arabs Made Israel’s Desert Bloom More Than 1,500 Years Ago MaceB92 17 points ago in Permaculture

This is the interesting line for me: Other data from the garbage dumps of Halutza indicates that as the years went on, locals used an ever-increasing amount of low-quality wood as fuel, which may suggest they were facing climate change."

We can look at the dust bowl 100 years ago in the US Midwest, and we can look to the Sahel in Africa 40 years ago. Removing all old growth trees from the environment depletes the water table and its ability to recharge. Not to mention fuel becomes increasingly time consuming or costly as each generation has to go farther to find wood.

On 2, I looked at Wikipedia and it said "The MOAB is not a penetrator weapon and is primarily an air burst ordnance intended for soft to medium surface targets covering extended areas and targets in a contained environment such as a deep canyon or within a cave system"

I feel like that's a contradiciton? Did we drop it into the cave systems or above it and it just shredded everything?

[–] TIL: An Indian will spend one-fifth of this life's earning on a wedding ceremony MaceB92 1 points ago in india

Do Indians gift money at weddings? The couple SEA weddings I went to the cost was partly offset by the guest giving money.

[–] Which careers ARE portayed accurately in movies? MaceB92 63 points ago in AskReddit

I feel like that'd be a very Diogenes thing to do. There's probably a lesson somewhere in there but I'm too distracted by the story.

[–] This Fortune cookie has a silly fortune MaceB92 3 points ago in mildlyinteresting

It's based on the Gros Michael banana that went almost extinct in the 50s. All our bananas now are Cavendish.

Actually food security leads to better health and education which leads to a decline in the birth rate.

Aragon was 87, as one of the Dunadin they had 3-4x the life of a normal human, so he was going into the relationship with basically an entire lifetime of experience.

Isn't he a couple hundred years old though? Romeo and Juliet was a 13 and 15 year old.

What tie in? Also had to look up Son in Law to make sure it's what I thought it was, 21% on rotten tomatoes? It's a classic!

For a minute I was thinking a Planet of the Apes role play subreddit that spans every civilization. I'm just gonna live in my world.

I sure wish they'd put solar panels over all the giant open aqueducts. In parts of the southwest as much water evaporates on the way as gets used. The water stays cooler and evaporates less and then cooler temps prolong the panel life.

They ended up hiring a small company, (Hispanic Last Name) Landscaping. 3 guys show up, they take a riding lawnmower out the back. He spends about as much time getting it on and off the trailer as he does cutting grass. By then the other two have trimmed the hedges, the trees, and edged. They... they took ma jorb.

[–] "Is there no dignity in working at a grocery store anymore?" MaceB92 68 points ago in TalesFromRetail

In the last couple of years I became a homeowner and I always hear complaints about manual labor work. Once I had a neighbor come up to me while I was taking care of my lawn, and offer me like $100 to cut their 10x10 square of grass. I said yes and then they got embarrassed when they realized I wasn't an immigrant. They probably think I'm teasing them but I want that $100 for 20 minutes of work, they're just too embarrassed.
