These companies are giving 30% of ads for access to Rokus user base, Roku has to build, market, sell, support and maintain their devices and they’ve done it so well they’ve built an audience of 43 million active users who they also have to keep happy and maintain.

Why exactly do you think these 100billion dollars conglomerates should put their channels on that ecosystem and not pay anything of the tens of millions in ads they’ll make to Roku that connects them this audience? If you lived on a busy street would you let companies put up ads on your windows and lawn for free?

You folks always complaining about Roku not making everything free for these giant corporations to profit off them are ridiculous.

What’s the problem with Roku asking for 30% of the ad inventory instead a 30% commission of all the AT&T ads?

It’s the same cost to AT&T and removes the work of selling an additional 30% out for them.

During the supply war, I read from multiple analysts the Russian oil extraction price is a lot lower than Saudis.

Since Roku can’t get any commission for a free channel that’s how they get money for supporting free channels.

It’s literally the same as asking for a 30% commission on all their ads like other companies but Roku gets paid more for their ads so they ask for 30% of ad space instead.

By the way, Youtube takes 45% of all ads on monetized channels.

The free channel still gives 30% to Roku but instead of money it’s ad space and Roku can make more money off the same ad inventory space so I’m not sure what you’re problem is with that.

It’s actually a win win because the channel doesn’t have to worry about finding as many advertisers now and can be more selective of what brands they want to work with.

Apple is 3-5 times more expensive and has a billion devices, they can make everyone agree to a deal with them.

Upgrade all my TVs and give it to family to do the same.

If you have one tv in your house great, otherwise enjoy spending $360 to $480 setting all your TVs with a streaming system.

Except for that big mistake they fixed real quick when they announced like 10 years ago they were going to split Netflix into two services, Netflix for streaming and something with like a Q in its name for the dvd rental part so you’d have two logins and two accounts. The stock immediately tanked and within a week they cancelled the changes.

Smart folks understand when everyone is telling you you’re doing it wrong, you should probably listen.

A LOT of people here expect Roku to be a open and free platform for everything because they think their $30 - $50 should cover any expenses Roku has while they provide total support usually for well over 7 years. I’m guessing most don’t realize Roku makes around $4 per device sale, $8 - $10 if you buy the ultra.

With us they lost a customer, we had HBO Now and we couldn’t upgrade to HBO Max on our fire stick or Roku. Then I downloaded it on my iPhone since HBO Now users got to use Max for free but because we signed up through Amazon the login gave an error message.

We had to cancel from amazon then resign with HBO directly or through Apple...so just canceled it.

It’s extorting when you don’t like the company, but when Apple takes 30% it’s just doing business.

    Apple TV is $179.

I’ll take 6 Roku streaming stick+ on Black Friday instead but I’m also very whatever about Peacock or HBO Max, they’ll both be on Roku and Firestick sooner or later anyway.

But at least the poor little multinational conglomerate AT&T has you to defend them.

[–] HBO Max Executives Ousted in Shake-Up — WSJ MoesBAR 1 points ago in cordcutters

No, they didn’t, Roku asked to get 30% like Apple and were waved off and HBO Max is paying for that by having access to 43 million fewer potential users.

TCL is trying to diversify from their deal with Roku and selling TVs with Android OS, I cant seen it but analysts say the Roku system is better. I mean it makes sense too, buying a tv with a well known brand preinstalled like Roku will always sound like a better value.

Why are you complaining about Roku and bringing up Amazon? “THEY” are two separate companies.

You source isn’t even a source it’s an accusation from a single lawmaker, you should try to find primary sources about Roku if you want to complain about Roku cause as of now you’re just ignorantly ranting.

You obviously don’t know anything about how Roku or any streaming service runs their business, I own Roku stock and read all their investor letters so I’ll explain it to you.

Apple has been taking a 30% cut of every song, book and game from the App Store for a decade. Sky hasn’t fallen because these companies will sacrifice 30% if they can sell their products to such a large user base.

Roku as of their last quarterly report has 43 million active accounts. 70% of Rokus net revenue is from advertising and commissions with a profit margin of 56%, their device margins are 7.5%.

Besides the fact that every public’s companies legal responsibility is to maximize profits for their shareholders, how exactly do you think Roku supports your streaming stick+ for 7 years with customer support, cloud services, stability and security patches for something they made $3.50 off you on or $2.10 from me as I got it on sale for $30?

They sell what in my opinion is the best and fastest streaming hardware almost at cost with a flimsy profit because each user makes Roku almost $25 AFTER buying their devices and that number keeps increasing as more people watch ad supporting shows and movies on the Roku Channel, see ads on the front page and sign up for streaming services.

And even with that Roku has lost 97 million dollars in their first two quarters of 2020 as they ramp up their licensing rights and expand internationally.

If you don’t like Amazon so be it but Roku is worth literally 1/100 and has about as much power. They are not the big bad because they want multinational companies to agree to the same terms with them as Apple.

You don’t like it, sell your $50 Roku on eBay, buy the Apple TV 4K for $179 and feel like you’ve stood up for your principles when you sign up for HBO Max on Apple and they get that 30%.

Or I guess you can go watch everyone on your computer.

[–] HBO Max Executives Ousted in Shake-Up — WSJ MoesBAR 2 points ago in cordcutters

Roku is making the same deals as Amazon and Apple, a 30% commission for new sign ups through their device.

It’s hilarious people come on here and act outraged that their $50 isn’t enough to sustain Roku or $40 Fire Stick. Go buy a $179 Apple TV’s and you can watch HBO Max on there which Apple still takes a 30% commission because AT&T player ball with them.

[–] HBO Max Executives Ousted in Shake-Up — WSJ MoesBAR 4 points ago in cordcutters

Roku has always had the same deal, 30% commissions for people who sign up through their devices same as amazon same as Apple. Same deal Netflix and Disney have agreed too.

HBO agreed to the deal with Apple but don’t want to make that deal with the two biggest streaming device makers that’s their loss, I’m not starving for another streaming service with more shows than I can watch in a year.

Good luck with that smart tv that has terrible functionality, won’t get updated past a year or two and has a fraction of the channels.

[–] HBO Max Executives Ousted in Shake-Up — WSJ MoesBAR 3 points ago in cordcutters

Exactly, there’s already SO MUCH content for me to watch if you’re not gonna make your channel easily accessible good luck getting 43 million people to chuck out one of the best streaming devices to sign up to pay for another service when we barely have time for Netflix, Youtube, D+ and Prime video in addition to all the free movie channels.
