Death in nature is never quick and easy.

[–] [Homemade] Hot Venison Sandwich Nipplehau 2 points ago in food

Browned and slow cooked a whole venison neck roast in onions, celery, carrots, garlic, tomatoes, red wine, venison broth, and italian herbs. Then shredded it, made a gravy from the sauce with some roux, and slapped it all on top of white bread, as is only right.

[–] [Homemade] Fried bluegill bites, chili grapefruit and avocado, collards Nipplehau 2 points ago in food

Sorry, I guess I phrased it poorly. It's chopped up grapefruit and avocado with a chili seasoning on it. It's really good on any melon or citrus.

    And yes, bacon!

[–] [Homemade] Raisins Nipplehau 1 points ago in food

I could have, but somehow that's not nearly as satisfying. And what dehydrators are you looking at?!

I own dehydrator to make venison jerky. But I don't always have venison to make jerky out of.

Recipe: Put seedless grapes in a dehydrator for 60 hours, apparently.

God speaks in absolutes. At least when you need him to. He speaks vaguely when you need him to, too. So, uh, I guess just like the rest of the Catholics, you can make up whatever you want.

Look, man, if you eat sea spiders that live on decaying flesh, otherwise known as crabs, you've got nothing to be disgusted over!

[–] When you make so much venison jerky that vacuum sealing batches seems like a good idea. Nipplehau 6 points ago * (lasted edited 21 days ago) in Hunting

I've tried a lot of marinades over the years on both beef and venison. I always come back to this one: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/86194/jerky-lovers-jerky-sweet-hot-and-spicy/

I, for one, love when hundreds of pounds of protein are just climbing trees all around me. Fried cicadas, roasted cicadas, cicada flour, cicada cookies, candied cicadas....

    Shrimp of the land, people!

[–] I have found the best channel on Youtube about foraging ! Nipplehau 1 points ago in foraging

Adam hosts about four group walks a year in Western PA. They're invaluable for a new or inexperienced forager, and totally worth taking a long day trip to attend if you're anywhere near the region. He posts them on the Learn Your Land Facebook page and on learnyourland.com

[–] [Homemade] Creamy Stinging Nettle Soup Nipplehau 2 points ago in food

I haven't, no. I haven't tried brewing yet. I do have a friend who brews.... Maybe I can convince him to try it!

[–] [Homemade] Creamy Stinging Nettle Soup Nipplehau 1 points ago in food

I had a bunch saved in the freezer. But tiny little nettles have started poking through the ground here in Pennsylvania in some of the warmer valleys. I'm excited.

    Here's a more serious reply:

My grandmother moved to the US from Calascibetta in Sicily when she was 18. I have plenty of family between Verona and Sicily. I've visited them multiple times. I know very well how much your generation, assuming your recent comments about being 18, care about 'tradition'. It only matters to you when you want to be right about something.

Fact is, though, that the different regions of Italy often have contradictory traditions. I was taught that, if you aren't serving a meal that has distinct courses in which pasta and meat will be split up, but rather a simple dinner on one plate, that mixing is perfectly fine and to do whatever I liked.

But I dunno. Maybe nonna came down with a case of 'murica.

[–] [Homemade] Herbed chicken and pasta Nipplehau 2 points ago in food

Woah now that might be too far, even for me! :P

[–] [Homemade] Herbed chicken and pasta Nipplehau 8 points ago in food

The chicken was salted and got a coating mediterranian herbs, and was then pan fried in butter.

The pasta was an attempt at cacio e pepe, but the sauce was a disaster, so I bailed out and got buttery, peppery pasta with parmesan.

Well, I'm American, and I enjoy pasta with chicken. So, I don't know what to tell you.
