[–] Good time to visit? NotanumberNaN 3 points ago in Pitt

It kinda is but you also get a tour of campus. When I did it they split us up by intended major and took us to the buildings that we would be going to the most for that major.

He also used four periods in the title, an ellipsis is supposed to be just three

[–] Why show up? NotanumberNaN 14 points ago in Pitt

Two people in front of me today in a big lecture in Lawrence were having a whisper conversation the whole class, while they were both just browsing on their laptops. Like, why not just go somewhere else and have a proper conversation?

And it would be silly to have some languages be 0 indexed and some be 1 indexed, thus they should all be zero indexed.

Why? Different languages have different needs.

The way "retard" is used in the comic, it is clearly meant as a personal insult to the dog.

    1. It's more intuitive for beginners
    2. It fits with mathematical conventions (hence why it's used in Matlab)

Edit: It's ironic that the CSS of this sub makes my list start at 0

What's the lesson? Arrays must start at 0, or else you are a bad person? There are legitimate reasons that a language might start arrays at 1.

As long as you didn't send anyone money you're probably fine. Maybe run a virus scan just to be safe. Malwarebytes Premium is free through Pitt software downloads, I recommend that.

[–] Has anyone found an earth-like moon orbit? All of the ones that I've come across are incredibly close to the parent NotanumberNaN 3 points ago in spaceengine

The moon is about 1/4 the size of Earth, which is actually the largest moon:planet ratio in the solar system. So maybe large moons are just very rare in the universe?

[–] Commute NotanumberNaN 5 points ago in Pitt

Where from? If you're coming from somewhere nearby like Shadyside or Squirrel Hill then it's pretty easy to get to campus. There are a lot of busses that go to Oakland and they're free with your Pitt ID. If you have to drive here then it's not worth it imo, parking be expensive. Also check out /r/PittCommuters for some quality content.

[–] The dance of earth and venus around the sun NotanumberNaN 1 points ago in oddlysatisfying

There are two ways a planet can orbit a binary system. If it's far enough out, it will orbit the center of mass of the two stars, as if they were one large star. If it's close enough to one of the stars, it will just orbit that star normally (it probably won't be a stable orbit with the other star around though).

[–] The dance of earth and venus around the sun NotanumberNaN 4 points ago in oddlysatisfying

It pulls the center of mass away from the sun slightly.

This is wrong though. What about when Jupiter is on the other side of the sun from another planet, how could it be pulling the center of mass away from the sun?

And he's not being a dick just by correcting you.

[–] The dance of earth and venus around the sun NotanumberNaN 13 points ago in oddlysatisfying

So, an ellipse has two foci. In an orbit, one foci is the point that the body orbits around, and the other point is pretty much meaningless. When one body orbits another, they are really both orbiting each other, with the focus of their orbits being a point called the barycenter. For the Earth-Sun orbit, the barycenter is inside the sun but not at the center. This isn't because of Juputer but because the Sun is being pulled by Earth with the same force as Earth is being pulled by the sun. Jupiter is massive enough that its barycenter is just outside the Sun's surface which is probably what you were thinking of.
