Oh yeah they are awesome, typing this on an i7 x230 right now. I wish there was something I could do about the battery life without dropping $80 on a battery though.

[–] Hiding from the government starterpack PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 2 points ago in starterpacks

Yep, At least from Amazon and Ebay. I haven't noticed any others that they use, but I assume they use a bunch more.

Not just any Thinkpad, but a 7 year old Thinkpad running Linux.

Veracrypt fixed a lot of the things wrong in Truecrypt's audit, I would imagine this is one of those things. Would definitely be very interesting to see if and how someone manages to reliably find hidden Veracrypt volumes though.

[–] Hiding from the government starterpack PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 6 points ago in starterpacks

The way Veracrypt does it is interesting. The hidden volume takes some of the empty space in a normal encrypted volume, and since they are both encrypted it looks just as random as the empty space would have looked.

IIRC space is designated for the header of a hidden on every Veracrypt volume, but since it just looks like random data they can't prove there is anything in the empty space. In theory they could try to brute force the empty space, but that would take even longer than brute forcing a non-hidden volume since they don't even know where it starts and stops. Brute forcing it would also be a waste of time/money because they couldn't even be sure if there was anything there.

You put sensitive but non incriminating files in the visible volume, so if you are forced to give up your encryption key that is the only thing they find. Everything in the hidden volume is still hidden. I haven't come across any group that has successfully found a hidden volume, as long as Veracrypt's crypto is solid I don't think it's possible.

That just shows what Google has from Amazon's site for shoes, you would then need to click one of those links to get to amazon. With !a it actually brings you to the search page on amazon.

I'm sure Google has some way to do it, its such an amazing feature I don't know how they wouldn't have it. I can't find anything on their site about it though.

[–] Hiding from the government starterpack PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 8 points ago in starterpacks

I really only ever need to use Google through !gi since DDG's image search isn't great.

Their normal search is pretty good, but I turn to google on those rare occasions I need something ultra specific. You can search Google for something insanely specific and it always finds exactly what you are looking for.

Lets say you want to search Amazon. You would first need to go to Amazon's website and after waiting for it to load, then you would need to search and wait for it to load the next page.

With a "bang", you could instead type "!A Shoes" into your search bar and it would automatically take you to the Amazon search page for shoes.

There are bangs for tons of sites, Youtube, Google, Wikipedia, Yelp, Ebay, Facebook, Twitter, etc. It makes browsing the internet way faster when you learn a lot of them.

[–] Hiding from the government starterpack PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 9 points ago in starterpacks

Or you could use a hidden volume, Veracrypt has support for hidden volumes. Can't ask for the encryption key if they can't find something that is encrypted.

You could also disable location in Android, but they ignored your choice and logged your location anyway. Google isn't exactly the most trustworthy company when it comes to user data, I doubt they actually stop tracking/profiling you just because you asked them not to.

[–] Hiding from the government starterpack PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 133 points ago in starterpacks

I use DDG because of the Bangs. It is such an insanely useful feature that makes it better than Google IMHO. If startpage had bangs though, that would change everything.

Really the only place DDG is lacking is image search, their image results are usually not anywhere near as good as Google's.

[–] How to properly recycle your old Thinkpad using the public library! PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 2 points ago in thinkpad

I use almost exclusively Thinkpads, but when I use my Macbook I'm always blown away by how amazing the trackpad is. They have by far the best trackpad on any laptop I've ever used, not just compared to Thinkpads.

It's actually nearly as enjoyable to use as the Trackpoint is. It's extreme accuracy combined with the gestures make using the machine a very smooth experience.

I'm terrified about the horror stories I've read of the cheaper risers, I always use the 3M ones because I've read too many cases of other risers killing GPUs or motherboards, catching fire, etc.

That's a good idea for the cover though, looks very good, did you design and cut it out yourself or did you have someone else do it? I'll probably make a few to test out, should let me use boards in builds that don't match their color scheme.

Nice job! Looks very sleek, Love the lighting.

Which PCI cable did you use? Is that the 3M one? And I've never seen anyone use a cover like that over their motherboard, Would that affect temps much? My motherboard is hideous and I'm thinking of ways to hide it.

[–] If this get 1,000 upvotes, I will give a Garlic Bread Dating Simulator beta key to EVERYONE who comments PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 1 points ago in GarlicBreadMemes

Wow, Just giving out keys to the gates of heaven all willy nilly over here huh?

A few questions, Will there be multiplayer? Will there be character customization? Will there be the option of drizzling your date in garlic/butter sauce? Will the garlic bread be sexy?

IIRC they think the moon/sun/stars are projections made by the government or something, Pretty sure they acknowledge that we are floating around space though.

[–] The free ThinkPad! PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 10 points ago in thinkpad

I don't think most people look at a 6 year old laptop and think it has any value, let alone an active community of people buying and using them. Not much of a stretch to think they thought it was too old to be worth anything.

Or switch after you use an ability, would be super interesting to play as an arcade mode. Not sure how you could deal with ults though, if you kept the ult charge through heroes people would just wait to use it until they got reaper or soldier.

It was my favorite show, until season 5. They really cranked up the techno-babble in season 5, like CSI levels of techno-babble.

For example the scene where they made a cluster of PS3s, when they put them together and they started overheating I almost stopped watching when she said "They're overclocking!" WHYYYYYY Some other cool semi realistic stuff happened that season that slightly made up for it though.

I loved the show as a whole, but the way they handled the last season was pretty awful. At least they left the possibility of a spin off.

[–] Pale Blue Dot PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 3 points ago in woahdude

But is the magma just stuck to the bottom? What would be keeping it there? Or is there crust on the other side? People couldn't live on the other side though because its being propelled upwards through space, so maybe it's barren with some kind of plant life that evolved to stick to the surface.

Or maybe we are looking to far into the ramblings of crazy people, would still be interesting to know what they think is on the other side.

[–] Pale Blue Dot PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 3 points ago in woahdude

I read about that guy too, he's crazy, he already launched himself once. He isn't going to get high enough to see the curvature of the Earth though so he is going to take a pic of seemingly flat earth and say he proved it's flat.

The last video looked like it was a rough landing, unless he changes something about how he is going to land it I don't think he will survive the trip.

[–] Pale Blue Dot PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 22 points ago in woahdude

Do flat earthers say what the back would look like? Would it just be flat rock/dirt?

[–] How to buy a Dell laptop with the Intel ME disabled from the factory, as government agencies buy them. • r/linuxhardware PM_ME_EVA_STUFF 14 points ago in linux

Ideally that is how it would work, I'm actually surprised Intel hasen't already been doing it, charging the people that actually want it would probably net them a nice bit of revenue. It's just that right now I don't think any manufacturers would do it for free unless one decided to do it, then they would have to in order to compete.

I'm not even sure they would be allowed to, we aren't privy to any contracts they may have with Intel.

I wonder if other manufacturers could start providing parts with ME disabled for a small fee, It would be nice to be able to buy motherboards and laptops without the ME.
