[–] Was Mission Impossible (1996) the first film to open in over 3,000 theaters? Was it the first film to play in 3,000 theaters even non opening? SanderSo47 12 points ago * (lasted edited 20 days ago) in boxoffice

Well, let's look at the movies that broke the biggest theater opening record:

    • Mission: Impossible (1996) - 3,012 theaters

    • The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - 3,281 theaters

    • Lost in Space (1998) - 3,306 theaters

    • Godzilla (1998) - 3,310 theaters

    • Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) - 3,312 theaters

    • Wild Wild West (1999) - 3,342 theaters

    • Scream 3 (2000) - 3,467 theaters

    • Mission: Impossible II (2000) - 3,653 theaters

    • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) - 3,672 theaters

    • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) - 3,682 theaters

    • X2 (2003) - 3,741 theaters

    • Shrek 2 (2004) - 4,163 theaters

    • Spider-Man 3 (2007) - 4,252 theaters

    • Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) - 4,362 theaters

    • The Dark Knight (2008) - 4,366 theaters

    • Iron Man 2 (2010) - 4,380 theaters

    • The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) - 4,468 theaters

    • Despicable Me 3 (2015) - 4,529 theaters

    • Avengers: Endgame (2019) - 4,662 theaters

    • The Lion King (2019) - 4,725 theaters

From this, I can deduce that it benefits if it's a summer release where more drive-in theaters are open, IP-driven, and it can get more theaters if there is weak competition combined with huge anticipation. And as you see, only a single R-rated movie (Scream 3) broke this record so it probably wouldn't be an R-rated movie breaking this record again. It would probably be an animated movie or a superhero movie.

Yes. I made a list a long time ago and my notes signaled that Mission: Impossible was the first one to open at 3,000 theaters. There are some 1996 news reports that mention this, too.

And just for fun, the first movie to open at 4,000 theaters was Shrek 2. I'm curious what movie will be the first one to open at 5,000 theaters.
