[–] LPT: Greyhound racing is now illegal in Florida after the midterm, which will leave a lot of good dogs in need of homes. If you're considering adopting a dog, please research Greyhounds and see if they'd be right for your family. StealsPaperTowels 1 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago) in LifeProTips

To be honest, emotional problems or being too hard to handle after adoption aren't breed specific. When I worked for a foster group in Dallas, pitbulls were especially prone to this. They are good dogs, but they are active. Puppies especially can be too destructive or anxious and get brought back because people aren't prepared. Separation anxiety was a big reason for returns.

Dogs are dogs, no matter the source. Its always going to be a big commitment and a risk.

To anyone thinking they wouldn't be able to work through a dog having emotional or anxiety trouble: Consider a cat. While there's risk adopting any animal, they are less high maintenance.

Whether or not racing is inherently abusive is controversial. The US tends to have much better regulations than other countries, but racing still has a big stigma. That stigma and the controversy is what led to it being made illegal, for sure. The sport has a history of treating the competitors much worse than say horse racers. I know from working at a shelter in Dallas that we ended up with retired racers a lot, but that was 15 years ago. They'd be abandoned in front of government buildings and left for state employees to call shelters. They weren't any good to the racers after career ending injuries.

Like most sports, though, there are good and bad people involved. I've seen arguments on both sides and like most political questions its not black and white, and there are a lot of factors to consider.

I just want to thank you for your kind response and encouragement. I got a few comments on this thread calling me weak or assuming I didn't care about politics, and it was nice to encounter some empathy for the fact that I'm on edge because of the constant stream of news and talk about this and politics in general. Work alone was a never ending stream, and I already worry constantly about America. It's so sad to watch these past few years.

I get panic attacks randomly, so I have to think about it more than other people. When I say 'panic attacks', I mean the kind where you have trouble breathing and think you're going to die. I've already had a couple at work and take medication for them. If that makes me a princess, so be it.

Furthermore, I did vote and do appreciate I can vote. Everyone who is intensely invested assumes everyone else who is saddened that this has become a fight to the death between two parties all of the time doesn't care. I'm so, so tired of this assumption and of the assumption that people who want some peace and quiet and to not be hounded about politics all of the time are weak or don't want to do their part in a democratic system.

Oh shit, I can't remember what the object class is but you can ask Sanders when he comes in."

[–] US Midterm Election Mega Thread StealsPaperTowels 10 points ago in Anxiety

I just want my country to not be so angry, depressed, and constantly talking about how the other people are evil and making their lives miserable all the time. I want to not be quizzed at work about whether I'm going to vote and who I'm voting for. I want to have the ability to see/hear the news and truly walk away from it for an hour or two to decompress. I want people to stop talking about other people like they are evil incarnate and focusing all of their time on strategies for defeating the horrible-awful-no-good-other-party.

That's all. That all I fucking want. I'm going to turn off the lights in a minute and just pray and meditate to myself, hoping that the world will eventually be a comfortable place for everyone to live. I feel like I can't breathe and I want to scream and cry and just fucking go to sleep.

You can find all kinds of homemade product recipes on pinterest or even just googling "homemade cleaning supplies/homemade (product name)". Its so worth it. I save a lot of money on things just by making them myself. You can even find homemade crockpot dog/pet food recipes for pets with allergies and stuff like that. If you're into crafting, its a great way to get your fix without spending.

Granted: You become the greatest five-pound-ball slinger in all of the West after defeating Kevin the Kid. However, you will never know peace again in your life as every amateur with a bowling bag and a smile will come looking for you. They'll all want to take you down.
