[–] Just how I feel... The_Fallout_Kid 2 points ago in AdviceAnimals

For me, 6 years into the profession, I often have WTF am I doing !? moments every semester. Where I am in Canada, I still have a 4-7 year wait for just “part” of a contract. No benefits. No security (lost a 6 month position with an hour’s notice while in class once). And teaching experience isn’t transferable to other regions... if I were a full contract teacher in my board for ten years and moved to a new region, I start my career over. Done. Supply teacher.

So, while it is worth it some days, just be prepared to get fucked over a lot. Oh, and don’t tell anyone you meet that you’re a teacher. A LOT of people hate us quite openly.

I steer students towards trades and any that say they want to be teachers I state bluntly exactly how the system operates. 1/2 our teaching staff is employed in the ways I’ve described.

Too many things. You know what you want anyway. For my own collection though, I’m always keeping an eye out for an affordable 1903 Springfield.

[–] Are wood stocked battle rifles the next big trend? The_Fallout_Kid 1 points ago in guns

I actually really like the stock shape and can’t wait for the SCAR (some version) to be available in Canada.

[–] Another day, another new Ruger product. American Ranch rifles in 5.56 and .300 BLK that take AR magazines. The_Fallout_Kid 3 points ago in guns

Fuck. I bought my Ruger Ranch last year... Didn’t know about the propriety mag shit. $150 CDN and 3 mags later (otherwise range day seems more like a reloading exercise).

Kinda missing some wood in that collection.

[–] Tim Hortons Cuts Employee Breaks and Benefits to Make Up For Minimum Wage Increase The_Fallout_Kid 1 points ago in news

When every corporation does this, will you be supporting strike action across the board? Will just stop shopping; stop using retail outlets and begin living off the land lol. I hope you have ~ 1.6 acres of land and a solid knowledge base for traditional living. Maybe invest in a loom. Realistically, you’ll be over this whole issue in 2 years. Unless you work for minimum wage, then you will probably be struggling to find work or suffering through underemployment. Long story short, Liberals suck at basic math, have no understanding of business, and have fucked the very population they claimed to be helping. You want change, vote for someone else next time.

[–] Tim Hortons Cuts Employee Breaks and Benefits to Make Up For Minimum Wage Increase The_Fallout_Kid 2 points ago in news

Wrong. If every business does it, then public backlash loses all power. Unless you plan on learning to make your own clothes, shoes, tools, and are willing to forgo any fast food until corporations give up profit margins. Then, once you have done this, convince every other purchasing Canadian to do the same.

That is not how business works. If everyone does it, then nobody (no corporation) will suffer from public backlash. People will still want coffee to go, and people will still prefer to shop for deals at big box stores. In a couple of years this will be the new normal, unemployment will be up, and social welfare programs will be ever more underfunded due to increased demand.

Most retail stores will do this. My friend owns a corporate store, the day the Liberals announced the wage hike timeline was the day corporate contacted their store owners about introducing self checkout. My friend knew that day he was eliminating at least 2 staff.

If you can do basic grade 5 math, then this is no surprise. Liberals have really fucked up and will end up hurting the very workers that they were attempting to placate for votes.

Edit: You can downvote me to hell and back, doesn’t change the realities of our world.

Depends on the bullet. Could be solid copper and not just jacketed. Then they can maintain their shape better and have better penetration.

[–] IWI Jericho 941F The_Fallout_Kid 1 points ago in guns

Been looking at different grips for my Jericho. I like the rosewood, but they look slippery. How have you found them?

Would really prefer micarta that is coloured like rosewood (no swirls or stripes) but that seems hard to find. Anywho, would appreciate your input. Thanks!

Took both to the range today. Put 20 through both, I still think the K98 has less kick. May have more to do with the weight of it, as well as the chassis shape. The K98 feels more solid, the the action is basically in line with the stock. The Enfield feels more loose (thinner barrel, stock not made from ironwood like the K98) and the action sits much higher than the butt stock, which (in my hands) seemed to increase muzzle flip. Just my 2 cents from today. Bolt cycled well on both, can’t wait to get a proper mag for the 303.

Side note: the Enfield shot more accurately. Both were shooting nice groups, but the K98’s front sight a still needs more adjusting (still shooting a tinge left).

I mean, don’t most adults do the same? If I am renegotiating my mortgage I wear a suit, going to an interview -> suit, renovating and picking up supplies from Home Depot -> plaid jacket and work boots, going to work -> suit pants and a collared shirt, going to the gym-> cheapest Walmart sweats I can find. How you dress or different “aesthetics” impact how other people treat you. Choose what dress is most advantageous for any given situation.

[–] Hunting with your milsurp The_Fallout_Kid 1 points ago in milsurp

Another reason I may not have taken to the Enfield action is my rifle came with an empty magazine (no spring or follower), bought a remanufactured mag but it won’t feed beyond the first round in the stack (likely a shit spring). So, I haven’t got to enjoy shooting my Enfield other than single shots.

[–] Hunting with your milsurp The_Fallout_Kid 1 points ago in milsurp

Shots were a nice grouping dead center at 50 yards, but way high (around 6”). Definitely red to aim lower.

[–] Hunting with your milsurp The_Fallout_Kid 1 points ago in milsurp

I’m actually not a fan of the Enfield bolt design. Charging the firing pin on the push, rather than the pull, seems less fluid. And yep, the recoil seems to be less noticeable with my K98 compared to the Enfield. Could be a lot of factors at play though: shape of the butt stock, ammunition, what clothing I wear, etc. I can’t say for sure that I’ve shot both under the same conditions. But I shot the Mauser quite a bit and I tend to think of it as having a more gentle recoil. My shoulder definitely showed me the Enfield recoil last time (burst blood vessels that is). I should try them side by side next range day.

[–] Hunting with your milsurp The_Fallout_Kid 1 points ago in milsurp

I’ve only shot 180 gr with my Enfield so far, and I agree that it seems to shoot it well. Now I just need to figure out how to aim with battle sights sighted in for 300 yards (while shooting at 100) that would be great.

[–] Hunting with your milsurp The_Fallout_Kid 1 points ago in milsurp

Was actually the first rifle I ever purchased. Shoots very smooth, and the recoil is quite manageable (less than my Enfield and waaaay less than my Mosin). Would highly recommend, as long as you don’t mind exorbitantly priced factory ammo.
