[–] [Discussion] Thinking is stressful | Doing is easy Ufcsgjvhnn 7 points ago in GetMotivated

So we need to think about it before doing it? I’m confused.

Oh, but I don’t have kids.

Seriously though, suppose I’m 50 years old, do I need to worry if I don’t live near the coast?

The issue with anticipating death is that the outcome is permanent. Have other options been considered?

This has a strong “life has intrinsic positive value” connotation.

I don’t really understand the feeling of freedom of those who believe are embracing nihilism or existentialism or whatever they wanna call it. What burden exactly are you getting rid of? Will it hurt less if you stub your toe against the bed now that life is meaningless? Will it hurt less to see your parents die, now that it’s meaningless?

Just because things are meaningless, doesn’t mean they won’t still hurt. Death remains a perfectly valid alternative to life. Thinking you’ll lose out on only the good stuff is wishful thinking at best.

    Thanks for your answer.

I think you’re right when you say that no one can answer for anyone other than themselves. In fact, saying that one has to find meaning already implies that finding meaning is something positive, something everyone should strive for. I think this is not so evident, and that, in a sense, someone who is trying to find meaning has at least already partially found it (in the search itself). The problem is for people stuck on the initial question, and who have not yet made that leap of faith which is believing that “life has intrinsic value”, which grants us the motivation to better ourselves and find our path in life.

As you said, what happens when you have no one to live for anymore? Sure, you could go and try to find someone else, but why should you? Why not anticipate death? You’re gonna bring pain and suffering anyway sooner or later. If we wanted to avoid that, we wouldn’t have children in the first place.

Why is life so important that we have to find a reason to live for?

Yeah and as all metaphors, they should reference a real world fact?

    Keep going where?

But we keep having children. So se must like it after all if we subject non consenting people to it.

I mean at what cost should we pursue pleasure? What if it entails pain? Is it still worth it?
