[–] Millions of chickens, thousands of pigs died in Florence in North Carolina Vanilla_Buddha 8 points ago in news

Yes, but the scale of modern animal agriculture makes it nearly impossible to handle these disasters. If someone farms animals in a floodplain, they should be prepared to handle a flood, or they can't operate. Ignoring the problem is sociopathic.

They shouldn't allow caged or fenced-in animals on floodplains, or the storage of fertilizers and waste. That would mitigate the potential damage and hazardous spillage from a storm.

Regardless of anyone's feelings about Pit Bulls, a 64 year old woman should not be adopting a fully grown pit bull.

There's also the profitable benefit of the Edge Effect, where two groups with different backgrounds create more new ideas than insular homogeneous groups. Companies and universities have known this for a long time, that's why they encourage diversity.

What is the difference between a dialect and an accent?

    Dialect

A dialect is a variety of language differing in vocabulary and grammar as well as pronunciation. Dialects are usually spoken by a group united by geography or class.

    Accent

When a standard language and pronunciation are defined by a group, an accent may be any pronunciation that deviates from that standard.

Groups sharing an identifiable accent may be defined by any of a wide variety of common traits. An accent may be associated with the region in which its speakers reside (a geographical accent), the socio-economic status of its speakers, their ethnicity, their caste or social class, their first language (when the language in which the accent is heard is not their native language), and so on.

Here is my response from a different thread.

Paul Waldau, a professor at Canisius College who studies and writes about religion and animal rights, said it makes sense that people who care about animals hold conflicting views of PETA, given both its dedication to animal welfare and the many thousands it has put to death.

“There’s a certain plausibility to the line they’re taking,” said Waldau. “If you take the very worst problems that others can’t solve, your rate of putting dogs down is going to be much higher than anybody’s who has taken on the simple problems, the easy ones, the golden retrievers of life.”

They have overreacted a lot in the past, but the good work they do definitely outweighs all of that in my opinion. They helped protest the elephant circus in my hometown, and now the elephants are free.
