[–] Part of a new mall being constructed collapsed in Mexico Watchful1 3 points ago in CatastrophicFailure

So you're saying if the government regulations didn't exist, the construction company that built this would have spontaneously decided to create and enforce its own building codes?

The problem is corruption, which is a social problem in lots of countries, not a governmental problem. The US has building codes and no corruption problem, and we have incredibly safe buildings.

[–] Part of a new mall being constructed collapsed in Mexico Watchful1 1 points ago in CatastrophicFailure

You know we're in a post that shows a mall collapsing almost certainly from not following building codes right? There's no way this was up to code, it freaking collapsed!

They likely had a permit, it was inspected and didn't pass, but they bribed the inspector to pass it anyway.

[–] How do I get a list of unread PMs? Watchful1 1 points ago in redditdev

Not really. You can just get all messages and filter out the ones that aren't unread, but that doesn't return the unread messages first, so if you have old unread messages they would be really far down the list.

In my bots I usually just go ahead and mark everything as read even if I'm not doing anything with it.

[–] Samsung tells homes to virus-check TVs Watchful1 2 points ago in gadgets

Fullscreen video ads are worth an order of magnitude more than facebook sidebar ads. Especially ones in a tv show where people are sitting on a coach and are actually likely to watch the ad.

Ads ARE data. These companies do sell access to big sets of data all at once, but most of it is from companies running ads on the TV. Just the fact that an ad was run on this TV, at this time, from this IP address tells you an enormous amount about that household.

Source, I work at a company that does this and spends tens of millions of dollars monthly on ads on smart TVs.

[–] A Confederate monument in Nashville was vandalized with the words 'They were racists' Watchful1 5 points ago in news

That would make sense if it was northern states putting up the statues, but it's southern states. Germany lost, just like the south did. The place that lost putting up statues of their own generals is exactly the same.

[–] reddit client request limit Watchful1 3 points ago in redditdev

Rate limits are per user. When a user logs in, they go through an oauth flow and get their own api token, which has its own limit.

[–] Developer Update | June 2019 Update Watchful1 1 points ago in Competitiveoverwatch

They can't release role lock this late in the OWL season, it would be too dramatic a shift in the meta and would be unfair to all the teams. I definitely believe it's coming after the season is over.

[–] Developer Update | June 2019 Update Watchful1 24 points ago in Competitiveoverwatch

No way, most dev videos include somewhat major announcements. IIRC the last one was the workshop announcement. This was competitive FFA and baptiste skin.

Crazy thing is the contenders season just started, so not only is OWL stuck on the old patch, contenders will be for even longer. They really should have pushed this to PTR a week earlier and gotten it out live before stage 3 started.

[–] Bulk check for username availability? Watchful1 1 points ago in redditdev

Just google "username availability", there are a dozen sites that do it.

[–] Bulk check for username availability? Watchful1 1 points ago in redditdev

Are you talking about bulk checking if usernames are available on reddit? Or bulk checking if the same username is available across a bunch of different sites?

If the first one, how many different usernames are you talking about? Why are you interested in this?

[–] How do bots like remindme get all relevant comments from r/all without using username mentions? Watchful1 2 points ago in redditdev

Reddit is averaging something like 80 new comments a second. The limit for a single stream is 100 since you can only get 100 comments in a request, and can only request once a second. If you need to make any other calls to the API, which would take a second on their own, or it spikes up above 100, you start missing comments.

[–] How do bots like remindme get all relevant comments from r/all without using username mentions? Watchful1 2 points ago in redditdev

That's what I'm doing. It's the SSE stream that doesn't support keywords. If it did, it would be much more performant to use that than to make repeated requests.

[–] How do bots like remindme get all relevant comments from r/all without using username mentions? Watchful1 5 points ago in redditdev

The RemindMe bot just makes sequential requests to pushshift and keeps track of the last seen comment. Pushshift does have a SSE stream, but it doesn't support keyword searching (last I checked), so you would have to just ingest all reddit comments from pushshift, which doesn't put you in a much better situation than just getting them from reddit.

[–] Boston Uprising vs Houston Outlaws | Overwatch League 2019 Season | Stage 3: Week 2 | Post-Match Discussion Watchful1 1 points ago in Competitiveoverwatch

Super looked like a mediocre main tank last season, and his winston was never his strong suit. The goats meta being really strong for rein's has really helped Super shine.

Plus the shock had no backup main tank and like 4 backup hitscan players. But right now you could arguably call Danteh the best sombra in the league, and with a sombra meta on the horizon that's a really big deal. Maybe the shock will make the transition and one of the shock's hitscan players will prove me wrong, but danteh was almost the sole reason they won that game.

[–] 84yo Japanese Grandpa Becomes IG Influencer After Grandson Dresses Him Watchful1 2 points ago in nottheonion

Most everyone on instagram influences to some degree or another, but not all of them do it intentionally, or try to make money off it. The title mostly implies they are influencing on purpose.
