[–] Did OWL become too big for 5 month season? Watchful1 0 points ago in Competitiveoverwatch

Plus they announced not only the start date of the regular season, but all the first week of matches. If a preseason was even in the cards for some time in January, they would be hyping it up already.

Which surely they would have by now if it was going to happen. I'm betting no preseason.

[–] Help, I left my car running overnight Watchful1 8 points ago in internetparents

I'm pretty sure that idling for 8 hours is far, far less taxing on a car than driving for 8 hours. But otherwise I agree.

[–] How do I give up? Watchful1 1 points ago in internetparents

Humans are naturally ambitious, driven, goal oriented creatures. Our brains reward us with chemicals that make us feel good when we complete goals. If your brain doesn't do that, it's a condition commonly called depression. The common symptoms are exactly how you describe yourself, you don't feel like you can do anything, you just want to lay around, you don't have any goals in life or they all feel completely out of reach.

The good news is you can go to a doctor, get it diagnosed and get medication that changes the chemicals in your brain to properly reward you. I know it's daunting, something like scheduling a doctor's appointment is exactly the kind of thing you don't want to do. But trust me, it's worth the effort. You aren't supposed to feel like that and with the wonder of modern medicine, you don't have to.

[–] Are there past policies, either in the US or other countries, that have that positively impacted the middle class and could be applied to the US today? Watchful1 1 points ago in NeutralPolitics

I mean, the comment I'm replying to also doesn't source anything they are saying other than a single example of a large transfer of wealth. So it's hard to disprove any facts since he just made most of them up.

[–] Are there alternative notations for hyper-large numbers such as TREE(3)? Watchful1 20 points ago in askscience

That's not how math works. Infinity has a specific mathematical definition and no amount of adding or multiplying regular numbers together will ever reach it (other than doing it an infinite number of times). A number being incomprehensibly large, but not infinite, is an important distinction.

It's not tax fraud if it's legal. That's the problem with our taxes right now. Not that the tax rate itself isn't high enough, but that all these loopholes are built in so you can get around it.

Just raising the tax rate isn't going to change anything if you don't close the loopholes. And that's never going to happen since it would require all the rich senators voting directly against their self interest, and the interest of all the rich people that lobby them.

Any potential plan to change something big like this also has to take into account how likely it is to pass. It's simple for a presidential candidate to have a plan to "raise taxes on the rich", it's a completely different matter to actually implement it.

Billionaires would then simply not give their children money. They just put it in a trust or private non-profit that the children control.

No one would ever go through a "normal" inheritance. If I had $500 million dollars and I could either give $100 million to my kids and $400 million to the government, I would find literally anything else to do with the $400 million and then figure out how my kids could eventually benefit from it.

[–] Requesting a bot to log certain auto mod removals, and the amount of times a user has a post/comment removed. Watchful1 2 points ago in RequestABot

Sorry again for the delay. I've uploaded the script here

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Watchful1/Sketchpad/master/modLogNotifier.py

You'll need to put in the subreddit you want it to run on in the subreddit line (replacing SubTestBot1). You'll need to put in the username, password, client id and client secret on the lines below that. There's some details here about how to get those values. You could run it under your own account or create a new bot account and make it a moderator.

I haven't tested it very thoroughly, so let me know if anything doesn't work.

[–] How often does `subreddit.stream.submissions()` refresh? Watchful1 2 points ago in redditdev

Streams are meant to be used when you want to run some code indefinitely. Like you would start it and it would just loop forever, constantly checking reddit to see if there's a new submission, and if not it would just wait till it checks again.

If you want to get existing submissions instead of new ones as they are submitted, just use subreddit.submissions instead of subreddit.stream.submissions.

AskReddit is high traffic, but that means it gets 3 or 4 submissions a minute. If you run the code, then run it again ten seconds later, you're likely to get the same titles.

[–] How often does `subreddit.stream.submissions()` refresh? Watchful1 3 points ago in redditdev

The request limit is technically 600 requests per 600 seconds. Which works out to 1 per second, but you can also do a bunch at once and then wait a while.

The praw streams have an exponential backoff. Which means they start out requesting every second, then after a bit of not getting anything new, they slow down, then slow down more, etc. But the longest they wait is 16 seconds.

But a stream doesn't make sense for what you say you're doing. If you run the script once and get some results, then run it again later, you shouldn't be using streams. Those are for when you want to just keep running the script consistently. Could you post your code?

[–] Overall increase in number of participating Open Div teams across regions Watchful1 4 points ago in Competitiveoverwatch

I played an open division match today. We played a comp other than some goats variant on one stage of one map. I would much rather be playing dive.

[–] Overall increase in number of participating Open Div teams across regions Watchful1 3 points ago in Competitiveoverwatch

How inconsistent? There's an option in custom games that auto pauses when someone disconnects. If you drop out once or twice in a two hour session you're probably fine.
