[–] I just got a new trophy called “Wearing Is Caring” on my profile. I know the award one existed for a long time, but i'm seeing the trophy of it for the first time in my life. What does it mean and how did i get it ? WorldTheAround 1 points ago in help

I believe in spreading best practices during a pandemic. I don’t believe it was done the right way by putting it in people’s profiles. To me, a PSA isn’t a bunch of unapproved individual service announcements.

If eyeballing the sun was a top 5 political issue rn, I don’t think a “don’t stare at the sun” trophy would be a good idea either. An opt in trophy to something comical like a “team moon” might be passable. Imo trophies should be fun, light hearted and enjoyed by all. Keep the top 5 political issues out of profiles, even if they have the best intentions.

Either way, about 1/2 the US is Democrat, other half Republican. 1/2 of Republicans don’t believe in wearing masks? 1 percent of Democrats don’t believe in them?

That means “Wearing is caring” trophy won’t be appreciated by a quarter of the US population and will be seen as political by the majority of that group. US politics are extremely important over the next 6 weeks and US accounts for about half of all Reddit users. Right or wrong, that is too big of a group to feel like they are having a political statement made by them in their profile that they don’t agree with, without it being their choice.

Because of all this, it’s also not fair to people who want their accounts to be separate from their political beliefs.

I stand by my opinion on it, not that it matters. It’s like politics, I shouldn’t have entered into the convo online

Not trying to be an asshole, but isn’t this why there are subreddits? You kind of named them in your post as well. r/funny, r/jokes, r/PoliticalHumor, r/memes, r/technology, etc.

Then flairs are generally available on individual subreddits for you to sort

At this point, I don’t see how giving this trophy for receiving a free “Wearing is caring” award.. is anything other then admin trolling. Only other option is they are happy politicizing people’s profile without their approval.

Edit: I am pro mask, pro admin, pro Argentium trophy and don’t believe masks or coronavirus should be politicized in any way.

Supposedly this can be done fairly easily with citrus trees.

V838 Monocerotis is a cataclysmic variable - or outburst - star in the constellation Monoceros about 20,000 light years from the Sun. The previously unknown star was observed in early 2002 experiencing a major outburst, and was possibly one of the largest known stars for a short period following the outburst.

[–] TIL that over the 125 years of the New York Public Library's existence, the most checked-out books are: The Snowy Day, The Cat in the Hat, 1984, Where the Wild Things Are, To Kill a Mockingbird, Charlotte's Web, Fahrenheit 451, How to Win Friends..., Harry Potter 1, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar WorldTheAround 353 points ago in todayilearned

Goodnight moon received an honorable mention. And here are some of the factors of why books are checked out frequently..

Length: The shorter the book, the more turnover or circulation. This is why children’s books are often among the most circulated.

Length of time in print: Clearly, the longer a story is in print, the longer the public has to check it out.

Languages available: In a city like New York, the more languages a title is available in means more checkouts.

Universal appeal: The more a story appeals to different tastes, the more checkouts it will receive

Current events: Particularly with adult books, what is happening in the world greatly impacts checkouts.

School: If a book has been on school lists for many decades, it is more likely to be a top checkout.

Awards and acknowledgment: Awards generate awareness and excitement that then generate checkouts.
