[–] More women in Iran protesting against forced hijab! barbarycoastal 21 points ago in pics

Simpler explanation would be riding the anti-Iran wave for karma. Not that it makes this post any better.

I think it's more likely that he's a smart person familiar with military strategy and knows what "return their cities to the dirt" implies. But fair enough.

What are you referring to? Persepolis? Woman and children died in huge numbers in its burning.

It seems obvious to me that what Dany had in mind for those cities was the treatment Old Valyria gave to Old Ghis - erasure. Carthage after the Third Punic War. She wanted to eradicate the Wise Masters and their sympathizers, and was willing to kill innocents to do so. Hence Tyrion's quote about her father: "He would have burned every one of his citizens - the loyal ones AND the traitors."

No reason for him to bring that up if loss of innocent life wasn't on the table.

They actually weren't in active rebellion. Dany just thought their leaders were propping up the Sons of the Harpy.

How do you level two cities without killing innocent women and children? Or was Tyrion just over-reacting with the comparison to the burning of King's Landing?

It's not really cherry-picking when it's part of the quote. Destroying cities. Tyrion said so himself. Why else compare her to the Mad King?

Shit, even the AutoMod hates Brie Larson.

I agree with everything you said. I also think that RDJ gets a pass for it because he's a dude.

Wait, what? The director made the film. Isn't she free to say whatever dumb shit she wants when receiving an award for it? "Debacle" seems like a strong word there. Plus Jimmy Chin was cool with it, so fair game.

I watched that interview. Really seemed like three co-workers playfully ribbing each other. The Marvel cast generally seems to have that dynamic.

[–] [Spoilers] Day-After Discussion – Season 8 Episode 5 barbarycoastal 26 points ago in gameofthrones

The thing is, she was fully prepared to kill countless innocents in season 6 - she wanted to burn both Yunkai and Astapor to the ground. Tyrion directly compared her plan to the one that inspired the Mad King to burn King's Landing. Genocide is not a tactic she is especially averse to.

    Here's that scene.

[–] [Spoilers] Day-After Discussion – Season 8 Episode 5 barbarycoastal 4 points ago in gameofthrones

She was going to slaughter countless innocents in Yunkai and Astapor if Tyrion hadn't stopped her. She wanted to "return their cities to the dirt."

[–] [SPOILERS] Reminder that Robb and Talisa saved Qyburn's life barbarycoastal 16 points ago in gameofthrones

Ned killing Lady way back in Book 1 really set the tone for the Stark tendency to subvert their Stark-ness for the sake of duty. Jon's the same way, clearly.

[–] [SPOILERS] Post-Episode Discussion - Season 8 Episode 4 barbarycoastal 1 points ago in gameofthrones

That's for sure. Any time you're working with a property beloved by a devoted fanbase, a certain portion of people are going to hate any adaptational choices you make. Even moreso when the source material doesn't exist yet.

[–] [SPOILERS] This broke my heart. barbarycoastal 1037 points ago * (lasted edited 16 days ago) in gameofthrones

IMO, his parting with Ghost (particularly in the detached way he did it) means Jon's officially a goner. Whenever the Starks depart from their Northern roots (Ned traveling south; Robb getting married under the Light of the Seven and chaining up Greywind), it's the beginning of the end. Jon's always had a very strong connection to the North, just like Tormund said. It really seemed like Tormund was giving him one final chance to forsake southern politics and return to himself by inviting him to come north with him, too :(

RIP, Jonny Boy. You were the best of them.

The trope that Asians are soulless automatons with no volition of their own runs deep on the internet.

[–] Chinese School Principal Dances with his Students barbarycoastal 25 points ago in gifs

These are Chinese kids dancing in gym class, so again I'm not sure how the OP comment is particularly relevant. Maybe if they were being tortured by the Chinese government or some such? You don't see many comments about the crimes of the US government on gifs that feature Americans in America... because it's not relevant.

[–] Chinese School Principal Dances with his Students barbarycoastal 26 points ago in gifs

And that relates to this gif how? Unless you're in it for that sweet anti-China circle-jerk karma, I guess.

[–] Chinese School Principal Dances with his Students barbarycoastal 3 points ago in gifs

I dare say that not everything that features China or Chinese people is propaganda. But perhaps I'm too bold.

She needs to aim where they're going to be, not where they are. Rookie mistake.
