[–] I’m interested in Ancient Rome what books do you recommend bettareckognize 1 points ago in ancientrome

It's not a major hurtle for understanding, it's a hurtle to enjoyment. While I am fully capable of sitting down with a text and googling every name I'm unfamiliar with, I'm not a university student, I study this stuff because I enjoy it. And I think it's less enjoyable to have to flip back and forth between a book and a computer, and more enjoyable to build up a sufficient base of knowledge that I only have to look up every third dude named Claudius instead of every single one. Secondary sources are good because they distill, then allow you to better enjoy the flow of the ancient literature without as many interruptions. Learn the difference between cis- and transalpine Gaul, figure out who the Graccii are, and on and on, then you can savor the language and the flow of the primary sources, to the extent the translators can capture it.

Sure, it has kind of a two-fisted tales vibe. We'll how development goes.

You can get through something like Tacitus without a general idea of the period, as I did before I got into this stuff, but I might as well have been reading a fantasy novel for all I understood about the various groups and regions. "Where the hell is 'Gaul?'" I mean, imagine reading a contemporary account of our time and having no idea who the Republicans and Democrats are, or knowing there was a thing called the EU but being pretty hazy about what countries were members when and was this before or after the period with those big wars, shit, they're so close together when you're a thousand years in the future.

[–] Coco Chanel, 1935 bettareckognize 3 points ago in noir

It's a black and white picture of a woman in a fancy outfit who's smoking, which is what this sub has mostly devolved into.
Also, I always like to call her "Nazi collaborator and spy Coco Chanel."

I hope OP didn't downvote me. It'd be a shame if he did again. Oh shit, I slipped and dropped this link to the first in a three part podcast series debunking his bullshit pseudohistory: https://ourfakehistory.com/index.php/season-2/episode-38-was-there-a-real-atlantis-part-i/

Oh no! A banana peel! I dropped another podcast link: https://ourfakehistory.com/index.php/season-4/episode-78-who-are-the-magicians-of-the-gods-part-i/

Upvote so others can watch the insane pseudo-historical ramblings of often-debunked Atlantis conspiracy theorist Graham Hancock.

There is a quote that is often attributed to Joseph Goebbles: "Accuse the other side of that which you are guilty." Somewhat ironically, the real quote, that he spoke at a 1934 Nuremberg, is "The cleverest trick used in propaganda against Germany during the war was to accuse Germany of what our enemies themselves were doing." So he committed that act BY accusing others of committing it. Much like a certain someone we know...

[–] This is Simo Häyhä - the deadliest sniper in world history | 500 confirmed kills in less than 100 days | He used no scope on his rifle | He held off 4,000 Soviets with only 31 other Finns | He was shot in the face with an exploding bullet and survived | He lived to 96 years of age. Hail Simo! bettareckognize 9 points ago in OldSchoolCool

It honestly might be a bit much to watch this dude just slaughter people. That's a huge amount of humans killed. Yeah I get they were an invading army and war is hell, but that's a horrific amount of death, and sniper shit has always made me uncomfortable. This guy killed so many people by sniping that to get it across you'd have to show tons of scenes of guys just walking around and then their chest explodes as their terrified comrades run only to be cut down as well. It'd be difficult to do well is all.

And how long will it last, really? I figure as racism lessens over time (admittedly it's not looking great for that now) the human race will gradually just become brown in general.

Honestly, my home laptop broke and I'M too broke to replace it. I also have dexterity issues and it's painful for me to write longhand for more than a minute or two (to say nothing about my handwriting being almost illegible even to me). I'm hoping to get a cheapo laptop by the end of the year.

[–] TIL that the Hatian Revolution was "the only slave uprising that led to the founding of a state which was both free from slavery, and ruled by non-whites and former captives." bettareckognize 93 points ago in todayilearned

I'm a white dude working in an office where I'm the minority - we do shipping to the Caribbean. I don't know that I've heard the term "African American" since I've been here. They say black. I say black (on the rare occasion I have a reason to mention race). Considering all the Jamaicans and Haitians and folk from Trinidad or Tortola or whatever, I'd probably get a lot more shit if I ever DID say "African American."

Fat and funny can absolutely work. I see chubby jocular dudes with hot women all the time. I mean they're not morbidly obese, but they're not marathon runners either.

Oh, that's the idea. It's a horror novel, after all. I sometimes wonder if, structurally, I've chosen something too difficult for my first novel. It's two POV characters (third person) in alternating chapters, who will eventually cross paths. Since it's set in Golden Age Hollywood I've also had to do a tremendous amount of research, since, as a history buff, I obviously had to choose a time period I knew little about before beginning. I really feel like I'm getting close to the point where I can truly throw myself into this, though.

I wanna see the juiced up gorillas fight each other. I really do. There, I said it. I mean people would die, it's an awful idea, but a PED league would be insane to watch, just pump whatever new designer shit they've got directly in and go crazy.

[–] I finally figured out what I'd been doing wrong bettareckognize 5 points ago in writing

At this point I'm at the "mapping it in my head" part for like two years. I've got good characters, I'm building a world, a mythology, and I have a beginning and most of an end, but there is SOMETHING missing.

[–] A Killer Cop Gets Fired, and Somehow the Cops Are Angry bettareckognize 2 points ago in Bad_Cop_No_Donut

Around these parts you can easily hire a bonded contractor, there are shitloads of them. Or you can drive down to the immigrant center (as opposed to when they just lined up along the side of the road) and choose a few dudes at random to jump in the back of your pickup. They're cheaper, they just are. I'm torn because I don't want these people to starve, and I understand they came here for a better life, but all of my uncles are contractors and it's getting harder for them as a direct result. So I'm not sure what the solution is. I guess go after the people who hire them? But then what do they do without that work?

I like to think he feels a deep sense of outrage over what he sees as injustice and feels within himself an urge to do something. Sure, politically it's unwise and in any case your average dude probably doesn't have much of a chance against thugs the government hires specifically to beat people up, but more than likely he was just kinda lashing out in the moment. He's not up his own ass, he's angry these people are being abused and doesn't know what to do.
