[–] I'm building a smart infinity mirror, here's the first prototype bleugre3n 2 points ago in smartmirrors

yeah this was a suuuper janky cardboard proof of concept before I build a frame and mount everything, so everything about it is pretty sloppy right now

    it’s required to post lol

at least I'm not the only one lol

in this iteration it’s a heptagram, but I wrote the code that generated it, so I think I know how it works

it’s not literally incomprehensible, but it has densely packed, wonky details that I wanted people to focus on. If I titled it “cool star”, I think that would have been overlooked

I used a language called Processing It’s essentially Java with a bunch of built-in libraries to build and display graphics more quickly

basically i thought the post about earth and venus rotating around the sun and drawing shapes was cool, so i made my own, then i made it bigger

Yeah, it’s actually a system of 500 points in circular orbit at incrementally-spaced speeds, where each point draws a line to the point behind it. As the distance between each point increases, it looks like a spiral that “winds up” and forms different shapes (when the positions have a common divisor). Since it iterates over a circular period, theoretically it would “align” into every -gon and -gram, up to 360 sides (however this would require many more points to accurately convey)

[–] Incomprehensible 7-Pointed Star bleugre3n 10 points ago in woahdude

    yep! it’s a spiral with 500 vertices

because my brain wants to break it into primitive shapes, and it looks like it’s a combination of triangles and squares, but then... it’s not

[–] Incomprehensible 7-Pointed Star bleugre3n 62 points ago in woahdude

pretty much, but the inward spiraling makes it loop around on itself

[–] Incomprehensible 7-Pointed Star bleugre3n 3 points ago in woahdude

basically my reaction at first, I was categorizing each shape found within this looping spiral, stopped at this point and was like "ok cool so its like a hexagon but... wait"

I see something kinda like this, but repeated 7 times (and inexplicably connected)

This was found within a winding spiral program I am working on, so I’m not sure on the exact angles. However, it is not limited to integer angles, so I would imagine it’s 360/7. That could be one of the reasons it looks so wonky.

[–] Incomprehensible 7-Pointed Star bleugre3n 31 points ago in woahdude

it starts to make (a little bit) more sense when you rotate it and look for symmetries

[–] Incomprehensible 7-Pointed Star bleugre3n 404 points ago in woahdude

right?? I was playing with a spiral when this popped up, and I broke for a few minutes

[–] Incomprehensible 7-Pointed Star bleugre3n 2 points ago in woahdude

Yeah they’re very similar. Interestingly, seven-pointed stars are most commonly used for Sheriff badges ( I guess because 6-points has religious connotations)

I thought the Star of David had 6 points?
