[–] How did you almost die? bmelche 2 points ago in AskReddit

I was swimming in the Pacific with a group of friends when out of nowhere, three huge waves came one right after the other. The first one slammed me into the ocean floor and before I could get back to the surface, the second one hit. I was slammed back to the ocean floor again and this time I didn't really know which was up. Then, the third wave hit, spun me around and threw me once again into the floor. By this point I was completely out of breath and had no idea of how many more waves might be coming. For the only time in my life, I felt totally powerless and thought I was going to die. (Obviously) I made it to the surface and back to shore. Unfortunately, my friend Austin who had been right next to me during all of that wasnt as fortunate. We found his body two days later and it turns out that he had fractured his skull when he slammed into the ocean floor like I was. Ever since then, I have wondered why he died and not me. I have used it as motivation to live a life that is worth living and that honors Austin's memory.

[–] People of Reddit who speak a language they don’t look like they would speak, have you ever had someone talk bad about you in your second language? What happened after? bmelche 6 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago) in AskReddit

Not me, but my grandmother... She always told me this story where she was riding a bus during WWII (when she worked as a morse code operator). Two young, male soldiers got on and noticed her (she was quite the looker back in her day!) and started talking to each other in morse code (assuming she wouldn't understand it) about how beautiful she was and wondering if she was single. She then looked right at them and "said" in morse code right back to them, "I'm happily married to someone much better looking than you two!"

It will hopefully blow over after this weekend. Most of the rioting took place on/around the Downtown Mall. UVA grounds should be fine. And I'm sure all sorts of extra security will be put in place. I wouldn't worry!

At least one person has been reported as dead from this incident. Thankfully they've already caught the driver.

Please pray for my beloved country, city, and that poor person's family.

Just so everyone knows, this group is NOT from Charlottesville. They've come to town to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee. They are evil, neo-nazis who are a disgrace to this city and this country.

Source: I live in Charlottesville. Please pray for us.

That would be an upright piano... very different from a grand piano.

[–] Heart with donor cells stripped away, leaving only connective tissue. It is then reseeded with the patient's cells bmelche 118 points ago in interestingasfuck

Biomedical engineer here... This is a pretty misleading post.

While yes, that is a heart with the donor cells "stripped away," there has been no successful attempt to reseed it with the patient's own cells. The heart is far too complicated to simply "reseed it." While we have been able to do this with much less complicated structures (such as blood vessels), we are years away from being able to tissue engineer something as complicated as a heart. When we do though, there are almost limitless opportunities that will come from it. This is absolutely the future of medicine!

One of my biggest irrational fears is of one day having one of my car tires explode in my face while I'm filling it up with air... This gif didn't help with that...
