[–] A 'friend' of mine contacted me after nearly a year of silence. This is what I got. drbaneplase 37 points ago in ChoosingBeggars

Reckon I can give a little background since you all took the time to put all of this (thank you btw!)

That guy and I had been friends since we were in the military together, more than 10 years before he up and vanished. We were the best of friends too. He and I helped each other out several times over the years, by moving, giving a ride, having each other over for dinner or a place to crash on a bad night, the standard bro stuff.

I helped him get a job at my work, and through his own hard work and determination, he moved from out in the field to into the corporate office. He was doing well, making a name for himself. Everybody loved him. But then he and his wife started having troubles, mostly because of him seeing things that weren't really there, like people following him, trying to kill him, his wife conspiring against him, even the US Government overthrowing the populace through control of and through Wal Mart. Not even kidding.

Anyways, one day he quit showing up for work. Management and HR tried like hell to help the guy out, kept him on payroll MUCH longer than they should have and gave him every opportunity to come back to work, no questions asked. He refused. He ended up having a mental break and spent a few weeks getting help. Once he got out, I would go over to his place regularly and have him do "stuff" for me to earn some money. Not much, but something is better than nothing. Mostly just hanging out and goofing off, but i made it so he felt like he was doing something to keep him from feeling like he was being an free-loader. And he was thanful.

Then he started asking me for real money. $100, $200, then $500. When i told him i couldn't do the $500, he ghosted me for a year. Then within 12 hours of hearing from him again, he dropped that bombshell on me.

It pissed me off for several reasons. He knows how much I make, he knows my personal situation better than anyone. He no longer has a job and hasn't worked, to my knowledge, since he got fired from our work. He had been "earning" money from me before he started asking for loans that would never and will never get paid back, and when he asked for a huge chunk (the $500) it was so he could submit his wife to a polygraph to see if she was lying about conspiring against him. When I told him no, he dropped me like a hit potato. Then this $7k whopper out of the blue a year later.

I wish this was just an internet story. He and I served together, and had been best friends for so many years. This is why I posted it here. He was using our friendship to try and manipulate getting money from me, and when he couldn't, he just dropped me.

I told him to lose my number.

    Haha you made me laugh!

He has asked me for money in the past, couple hundred here, a twenty there. Always told him No. This time, I told him to lose my number, that I was done being his friend.

[–] What is something you spend a ton of money on that the vast majority of people never would? drbaneplase 1 points ago in AskReddit

Pilot lessons. I've dropped close to $15,000 for my private pilot license (PPL) and got all the way up to my final checkride prep flight and backed out. I will likely give up that particular dream. 15 grand gone.

It took me like three minutes to read this because I kept laughing. I relate so hard!

BTTF is my all time favorite movie. In fact, as I sit here right now, I'm wearing a BTTF-themed sweater. I remember when BTTF came out. I remember when parts II and III came out. I own the movies and have since they came out on VHS. I can nearly quote, line for line, the whole movie. And I talk and argue, loudly, with anyone that will listen, about how BTTF is the greatest movie of all time, and how the trilogy is the best trilogy of all time. I know most, if not all, of the Easter eggs. I know most, if not all, of the continual gags throughout the trilogy, the in-your-face ones, and the ones that are very very subtle. I say all of that to say that I am someone that could be considered a near-expert on the movie and the trilogy.

It has always been a blue VW bus with white trim, and an open top.

I've got tickets to see them at Louder Than Life next year. They are playing 2 days in a row there, 2 different sets. I can't wait!

[–] I don’t smoke so I don’t get a break? Ok. drbaneplase 132 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago) in MaliciousCompliance

Not sure if it's still the same now, but when I was in the military, a common phrase was, "Smoke 'em if you got 'em!" The smokers could fall out of formation, as early as Boot Camp, and quite often afterwards, and smoke their cigarettes. It was a great way to not have to stand at parade rest or attention and be able to talk, joke or just feel human. A LOT of people became smokers that way.

    *edit: fixed spelling mistakes

[–] What Mandela Effect blows your mind the most? drbaneplase 1 points ago in MandelaEffect

In Star Trek: TNG, before this particular shift, Captain Picard was a decisive Captain, a Renaissance Leader. Now, whenever he is grappling with big decisions, whether it be because of his crew or because of something going on outside, he now fiddles with this pink crystal. It makes him look, well, indecisive and second-guessing. He is fiddling with it often in his Ready Room, even in Ten Forward.

Just a thought, if she doesn't want children and you do, maybe you to can come to a compromise. You two could be a host family for foreign exchange students. It won't be the full on commitment (read: lifetime) of a bio child or adopted child, but you'd still get to enjoy fatherhood. I do this!
