[–] Trump Defends Saudi Arabia’s Murder of Journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saying Iran Kills People Too green_flash 6 points ago in worldnews

"Iran's killed many, many people a day. Other countries in the Middle East; this is a hostile place. This is a vicious, hostile place. If you're going to look at Saudi Arabia, look at Iran, look at other countries," Trump said. "I won't mention names, and take a look at what's happening. And then you go outside the Middle East, and you take a look at what's happening with countries. Okay?"

    Incoherent rambling.

[–] Human rights campaigner forced into hiding for protesting rape and murder of 11-year-old in Pakistan green_flash 34 points ago in worldnews

Ms Ismail, who was born and grew up in the remote community of Swabi, two years ago delivered a powerful TED speech in which she revealed how up until the age of 16, she wanted to become a jihadist. In this conservative city, she said, there were posters trying to recruit both young boys and girls to become “martyrs” either in Afghanistan or Kashmir.

The person who stopped her, she said, was her father, Muhammad Ismail, who had no interest in the extremists’ jihad “but believed in peace”. At the age of 16, she started Aware Girls, a group that worked to help young women.

One of those who attended one the group’s programmes in 2011 was Malala Yousafzai, who in 2012 narrowly escaped with her life after being shot by the Taliban in the Swat Valley, apparently in retaliation for promoting girls’ education.

What a life story. And I have never even heard the name before.

[–] Erdogan set to lose Istanbul green_flash 10 points ago in worldnews

I don't think it's that easy. Erdogan did bring some change from the ultranationalists that had been running Turkey before. There were definitely darker times in Turkey, for example after the 1980 coup when the use of the Kurdish language and folklore was banned throughout the country.

He wasn't up against Erdoğan himself though. The AKP candidate was Binali Yıldırım

[–] US Consulate in Canada raises pride flag despite Trump order: “For the 6th year, we are proudly raising this beautiful Pride Flag at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto to mark June as #PrideMonth!" green_flash 78 points ago in worldnews

There's no reason gay pride should break other traditions, it only crates more problems.

Many US embassies had a tradition of flying the pride flag below the US flag on the main flagpole during Pride month. They've done so for many years. That tradition was broken by Pence's homophobic order.

One key criticism of conservatives launched against Obama was that he constantly apologized for the US. Which is of course bullshit, but the bullshit accusation nevertheless sticks because he hasn't ruled out apologizing aggressively enough.

As a leading US politician you never want to even make the impression that you may be considering apologizing for anything the US has done to non-Americans in history or you can kiss your career goodbye.

"I think he had made a practice of trying to apologize for America. I personally am proud of America." --Former defense secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Feb. 20, 2011

"I will not and I will never apologize for America. I don't apologize for America, because I believe in America." --Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (author of "No Apology: The Case for American Greatness"), Feb. 11, 2011

"Mr. President, stop apologizing for our country." --Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, Feb. 11, 2011

[–] Iranian general says an "American P8 aircraft with 35 on board" was also violating Iranian airspace, but Iran refrained from shooting it down green_flash 282 points ago in worldnews

    Airspace violations happen pretty regularly.

Just yesterday two Russian bombers violated Japanese airspace twice.

In fiscal year 2018, the defense ministry counted 999 such incidents, the second-highest total since the country began scrambling aircraft in 1958. Within that fiscal year, Japanese pilots flew 343 sorties to intercept Russian aircraft, a 12% drop from 390 flown the previous fiscal year, the ministry said.

Russian bombers regularly fly relatively close to US airspace, too.

In May 2018, two Russian bombers came within 55 miles of Alaska's West Coast according to this article.

This image shows the US and the Iranian claims of the location where the drone was allegedly shot down - overlaid on each other.

EDIT: Found another image which shows where the US and Iran claim the intercepting missile was launched from.

RT rarely makes the frontpage, at least in r/worldnews.

You can check for yourself via reddit search.

Apart from this submission, there was just one other RT article in the last 4 weeks that had a score higher than 1000.

[–] Downed US drone turned off ‘all identifying equipment’ in violation of intl rules, Tehran says green_flash 11 points ago in worldnews

That's rather irrelevant in this case as the article is merely quoting what an Iranian official said to Iran's state broadcaster.

The Reuters article is not a whole lot different.

One should be skeptical whether the Iranian official is telling the truth though. He could be spreading state propaganda.
